hey guys smb1 had a huge influence on me in terms of speedrunning and a sub 5 in any% is a little dreamtime of mine but i only have the pal version of the game is a sub 5 even possible on PAL ?
In short, while you can TAS a sub-5 in PAL, doing so by a human is unrealistic.
Slightly elongated version: The PAL TAS is actually faster than the NTSC TAS, which would seem promising for getting a sub-5 on it, but this discrepancy is a result of the PAL FFPG, which saves multiple framerules on every level and, sadly, is not RTA viable (I wanna say it has never been done full-level on any level, but I'm not 100% on that). This is also important because the PAL version runs at a slower framerate than the NTSC version, meaning that an equivalent run would be slower on PAL than NTSC. As a result of these two factors, a sub-5 PAL would likely need at least one (and probably 3 at a rough mental estimate) of a trick bordering on human impossibility, so no, sadly, a sub-5 on PAL isn't feasible
PAL FFPG has never been done and never will. The inputs are stupidely precise. Lightning 4-2 will be added in runs before anyone even gets close to PAL FFPG
@Geek007 they don't. It's just the way Europe's electricity system is done. All their CRT TVs are 50hz, so a 60 fps console wouldn't work at all
this is dumb af probably but im new to smb1 but have been running unknowingly on pal i guess my question is will it transfer over or because the games is slower does that mean my muscle memory and points i pick to jump are all off by a little when i switch
edit- also sry for asking a diff question in your thread o.p
All your muscle memory is gonna be fucked if you start running on NTSC. Since PAL runs at 50fps and 50htz, it is slower in real time than NTSC. Essentially, if you switch from PAL to NTSC, you'll feel like you're playing at hyperspeed.
Also you have to deal with the jump distance, cause mario jumps a bit further or higher on PAL than on NTSC
Um, remember when I said PAL FFPG is impossible and no one will get even close? Well, I just did it at half the normal speed lmao. I still think normal speed is impossible tho
yeah sub 5 on pal happened years ago, TurnRave got a 4:56.715 8 times, he said he will stream attempts if he keeps getting it, also it was timed by his friend the twin galaxies referee todd togers using a stopwatch
I think the current PAL tas is somewhere around 4:55.16 by Happy Lee, and there weren't too many inhuman tricks I don't believe.
there were. The floor clip in 1-2 is pixel and frame perfect, because the reason why you can clip through the ground is, that your y-position gets manipulated by 1 pixel by the jump of the elevator, which is extremley hard to time for a human. Also, you need to press L right in the frame when you touch the ground to clip through. But the biggest timesaves in this run are still the FPGs. On PAL, you can do a full Flagpole glitch (FFPG) in every Level, which saves a bunch of time (idk how many framerules, Im'm a noob in smb1). If you wondered now, what a FFPG is, it's what happens at Bullet Bill Glitch (BBG) in 8-2. Instead of only touching the flag a bit lower due a clip into the block, you touch it way lower, so mario clips out of the block and the timer starts to count down instantly. On PAL, you can do that on every Flagpole, I believe because of speed value changes, without needing any enemy. This FFPG is extremely precised, it requires 4 frame perfect inputs in a row, what is literally impossible for human. It's a long time ago that I watched this TAS (I also made a TAS of the PAL Version, but I couldn't manage to beat HappyLee), but I believe that were all major timesaves. If I'm wrong, feel free to correct me, I already mentioned that I'm a smb1 noob. Btw sorry for all the grammar mistakes, I still have to improve my English a lot
PAL TAS is actually 4:51, 4:55 is the TAS timing. Also your description of how difficult 1-2 floor clip is not entirely accurate. 1-2 clip saves 2 framerules at most. With no slowdown, and considering you're using Pallsson, you can jump on frame 105 and do a 19 frame jump, or you can jump on frame 111 or 112 and do a 15 frame jump. Also you don't have to press left for the clip, that would actually be slower because you would need to scroll the screen further to enable the warpzone. I could see 1-2 double framerule save being used in runs being a very realistic possibility. Also the inputs for ffpg have been done on an official NES controller by threecreepio. PAL record is 5:07.977 by JoshKeys and PAL Human Theory is 5:01.997. Also I need to strongly strongly clarify that just because PAL FFPG inputs have been done does not make it realistic in any way to be done in a run.
