New categories discussion

Hey guys,

since Vice City gets glitched really hard right now, there are a lot of people thinking about setting up a new category.. because some people don't really want to use hard glitches like duping. sure there are some people who say we should just deal with it..but that's why I wanted to start something like a discussion first. If enough people agree and start running different categories it might be possible to get the new category into the leaderboards..

So.. well of course right now there are things like no duping% in mind, where it's allowed to do replay glitches like clothing, and buying assets. Also some people also think about no replays, which would kind of be like a back to the routes % ? :D any% would be obviously just using every glitches people got to work, and will get to work in the future.

So what do you guys think about that?

Cheers o/ R)

Any% no asset/mission dupe sounds good, any% no replay means you can't reload with replay, have to do cc, no trying to get cars to spawn etc (does that even work), definitely new categories will have to be made because I'm seeing quite a few people already against the new glitches found and this has happened in a few games alsi

Slovenia

Any% no mission chaining sounds good, kinda like Ocarina Of Time no RBA/WW. Replay is too important to the game, no one would run any% no replay. I was thinking of a 0rng% category where you're allowed to dupe a maximum of 2 times (3 missions total) so you can skip SSA and CP, but then realized that leaves Taxi 2 in the category so that doesn't work.

All in all, I'll try a few any% runs, though any% no chaining sounds more fun to run, but the question is if people are gonna want to run that.

Germany

Well if no chaining is like not duping these missions but still using replay for CC skip and CP clothes away glitch then I'm in the boat^^

I also will do the "new" any% but still.. I kinda think I'd like it more without duping and skipping all these assets

Slovenia

That's exactly what I meant MuXu96, free assets allowed, CP glitch allowed, just no mission duping to increase the asset done counter. But man, I'm so amazed at the lazy way they programmed that, when it would be so easy to prevent that.

What the counter works like: if(currentMission.isLastMission()) assetsDone++;

When you could just have an array of boolean values: if(currentMission.isLastMission()) { assetsDone[currentMission.asset()] = true; }

and then you just count the true values in the array.

England

as posted elsewhere, i think how things were when we just had free assets was perfect because no CC, i don't know what to think about the CP clothes glitch as it became obsolete before i really saw it in action

Slovenia

Well, the CP glitch removes cop RNG and speeds up Distribution because you no longer have to wait out the wanted star timer, but on the other hand pedestrian spawns become more RNG intense.

England

m00n, while its true the glitch would have been easy to avoid, you can't deny that I doubt they ever would have considered it being a problem.

Also, if you ask a programmer to make something that checks if you have completed 6 assets, 90% of them will use a counter. If you use an array of bools you have to sum the values to check it anyway, at which point you might as well have used a counter.

Just start running any% no dupe. If enough people run it it'll turn itself into a new category. That's how mission% worked. I don't think its a good idea to make this category only to find noone running it.

Basically, show interest in the category by running it. Not by posting a forum message. Good luck.

S, that's what I intend to do. I just haven't gotten around to streaming yet.

Bollard: Not only that, but an array is larger in size than one int. I know it doesn't matter much for PC, but on PS2 it probably mattered a bit.

I'm into the Any% no duping type category and will start running that

England

Megadrive, you could get around that by using bit flags for each asset.

Also, Any% no dupes is sure to pick up, many people are rejecting the rampage glitch anyway and the run with no CC and the new CP strats is actually quite fun. I always liked the SSA RNG anyway.

Slovenia

While it's true that an array is bigger than an int, we're talking about an array of 10 elements, and I highly doubt PS2 had that much of limitation on memory. Anyway, back to the discussion at hand, I'm gonna get a sub 1:10 any% time, then start to run any% no dupe. While any% should take any and all methods to get a better time, I don't find waiting for 3 and a half minutes doing nothing fun or an indication of skill.

Agree @ m00n :) Kinda my plan now, just with switching to all mission% for some time I guess :)

The increased size from an array wouldn't have been an issue, nearly all the variables in the game are dword where most could be byte, so they clearly weren't too fussed with memory usages.

nodupe% sounds good to me as well

Wales

I agree we need a new category, any% no dupe sounds good, I'll start running it today, would be great if other runners did the same, hopefully we can get it put on the leader-boards soon :)

Netherlands

I have tested everything out here in Italy on my laptop and I'll probably do runs of it after the Trilogy 100% race

South Georgia

So how about single segment runs? The current any% route has a save + load. So it's technically segmented.

England

I don't think there's anything wrong with it just being called Any% no dupe or nodupe%, rather than single segment. Saying the current Any% is segmented is disingenuous because you keep the timer running.
