[Crossposted from DMC5 leaderboard forums]
So DMC5SE was confirmed for next-gen consoles (PS5 and XBSX).
TLDR it has Vergil, Legendary Dark Knight mode, and Turbo. Also includes all DLC.
This is what's going happen with the DMC5 leaderboards:
-There will be Vergil-related categories added to DMC5 vanilla, since Vergil will be coming to that release as DLC.
-DMC5:SE runs will be verified on this board. We will probably do the same protocol as before with DMC5 where the boards are locked for a couple weeks after release too.
Important to note: since DMC5:SE will have the DLC weapons + breakers included in it (+ other DLC) for free, it is extremely likely we will allow all of these in the runs for SE. DMC5:SE will be a functionally different release + run, and that is why the boards will be split (similar to DMC4 and DMC4:SE).

The time has come, and I definitely have too.
By the grace of whatever deity, the awesome @Mysterion_06_ has finally blessed DMC4SE with an autosplitter (with optional doorsplitter btw) and a load removal script. All of this is integrated into LiveSplit for you to peruse at your leisure.
This is a great QoL change in many ways.
- No need to buy expensive hardware to get better times
- Easily see where you actually lose time (no load time inconsistency + specificity with doorsplitter)
- Pausing the game will pause the timer, so you don't have to suffer when you need to go to the bathroom (please do not abuse this and go eat dinner during your PB attempt)! Item usage is still timed though, don't worry.
- If your hardware is not the best (shoutouts to @LonerHero ), then you can select from script refresh-rate variables that are included in the options. Please utilize this if you happen to see your timer splitting late, or stopping for incorrect amounts of time.
As a result, the leaderboard has separated into PC and Console categories, so that Console runs are not simply pushed to the bottom of the board.
Please check resources for the following:
- Downpatch fix for LRT to work. This is a simple downpatch and will not change the run. It also allows you to use SuperTrainer v9!
- Splits for doorsplitter. There's a lot of splits there, so we did the legwork of providing blank ones for everyone to use.
At this time, we will not be implementing LRT for ILs (Bloody Palace and Boss Rush), but it's something we can revisit in the future. Thanks for reading, and happy running!
Truthfully, I don't think this game is that hard to understand just from watching a few runs, but tutorials never hurt. Do it to it, yo.
Gonna be honest, I don't see the point. There's not enough difference in the characters mechanically (or route-wise really) to justify it. It's not like you get access to completely different levels when selecting a different character in the same campaign. It's the same missions, just different character model.
The Dante Must Die and Heaven or Hell categories have been added as Misc. options for NG+, NG+ Faustless, and NG+ Prologue. The all-encompassing "Prologue" category has also been split into two separate misc categories called "NG Prologue" and "NG+ Prologue" so that there are no impossible categories on the board.
Have fun.
Emulator runs have been moved to corresponding misc. categories due to a skip that was found that saves about 4 minutes, and is only available on the PS2 version of the game. LonerHero has tested the viability of this skip extensively across all characters and has come very close to his PC WR for Dante really quickly, despite longer loads on the emulator. Below is the reference for the skip:
Unfortunately, PS2 can only beat other versions with this glitch on an emulator. I would be totally fine with leaving PS2 emulator runs up if PS2 hardware could also beat the current PC WR and overtake emu runs, but that isn't the case. As a result, I've moved emulator runs to a misc category.

I'd be down with RTA no loads as the final solution, if possible. An "FPS" variable similar to how RE1R handles FPS differences would probably be sufficient for those concerned with the differential of hardware. The differential here is pretty minimal so I'm not sure it's worth the stink, especially since mechanically no runner is at a disadvantage.
Asking for a few changes for this board: https://www.speedrun.com/dmc5div
Would like it to be a sub-game and modification of Devil May Cry 5: https://www.speedrun.com/dmc5 Can't seem to add it to sub-games even though I'm series mod, and this isn't an official release, so I'd need for it to be set to unofficial if possible.
Main category: New Game Sub-categories: Nero/Dante, Vergil, Lady/Trish Difficulty sub categories: Human, Devil Hunter, LDK
Reasoning: this looks cleaner and this is the part of the board that matters the most, since this is how majority of long-term runners will/have engaged with the game.
Main category: NG+ No Items Sub-categories: Nero/Dante, Vergil, Lady/Trish Difficulty sub-categories: Human, Devil Hunter, DMD, LDK, HoH (Human and DMD as misc)
Reasoning: HaH has 2 runs and SoS has zero. I'd even advocate for DMD being removed and moving them to a google doc or something until more interest grows but idk how people feel about that. Also saying "Itemless" is awkward as opposed to "No Items."
Misc category: NG+ No Items w/ Super Costume Sub-categories: Nero/Dante, Vergil Difficulty sub-categories: Human, Devil Hunter, DMD, LDK, HoH (Human and DMD as misc)
Reasoning: Very few people play the game this way so it's not indicative of the community. Hence, misc category. This also makes it so there's no category where Lady/Trish are mistakenly listed as having a super costume.
Move Boss Rush to ILs, as you are not playing through the full game during a boss rush. This makes for less categories on the main board and gives us a new IL board, which is easier to find since it will be right below BP. More players may see the category if it is there and it could get run more.
I'm fine with that tbh. We can look into recreating this glitch down the line, but until we figure out a way to replicate it, it will be banned. It will henceforth be referred to as the Boomstick Glitch.
As for requiring Twitch VODs and input displays, that's a bit much for this game imo. We already require timer though.
It wouldn't make any sense if one port got a loadless timer and the other did not. Both ports would be under the same subcategory, therefore both would have the loadless timer.
This is a petition for a community vote on revamping the boards for DMC3: Special Edition. I've talked with some other runners of the game and we've come to a consensus on what we think should be voted on.
Consolidating platform subcategories to just be PC and Console This is easily the biggest change the board is in need of. The amount of subcategories on this board makes actual competition a joke. RTA is an inherently unfair timing method by nature, and with a game as old as DMC3 (almost 15 years) it's best to not split hairs over very minor differences in hardware when this game can run on a toaster (shoutouts to LonerHero's laptop). The reason we would want to vote on having PC as a separate category (which would encompass both 2006 and 2018 PC releases) is because we are currently reaching outside the community to get a properly working loadless timer.
As a sidenote to this, do not mention Switch having style-switching. That's clickbait and not confirmed at this time. Barring any more news regarding this, we can think about what to do with Switch later.
Any% and Dante's Awakening being moved to Misc. categories Any% as a serious category just doesn't make any sense. It's merely dying three times and then doing a NG Easy run with zero differences. Dante's Awakening being lumped in with the rest of the categories also doesn't make sense since it's effectively a different game.
I hope we can come to a resolution as a community and make the changes these boards need to look cleaner and more welcoming to newcomers. I would also volunteer my own time to help reconstruct the boards if needed.
Only one dmc game has a glitchless category, which is the reboot. So let me break this down.
Currently here are the known skips in dmc5 (unless you're playing on console):
-m2 pit skip -m3 university skip -m4 bat fight skip -m8 pit skips -m9 tree skip -m9 coffin skip -m10 long hall skip -m11 skip (NG+ only, and has never been used in a run) -m12 gargoyle skip -m18 shadow fight skip (not useful)
Now here are the skips that are not developer intended (part of the level path) and useful.
M3, M4, M9, M10
Here's the amount that you could theoretically count as a glitch:
M3
M4, M9, and M10 are mostly exploits based on the way the game is structured. M9 has no invisible wall in the doorway, this is why it works there but not M4. M4's bat fight skip is based on how the cutscene trigger is mapped, so you're not glitching anything, just activating a cutscene, and this skip only saves like 7-10 seconds max. M10 you can even encounter in a casual playthrough because it is an exploit of how encounter priority is structured.
Even with all this, these skips do not fundamentally change the run. They just make it shorter. In order to justify a glitchless category for this game, it would need to fundamentally change how the route works (see: DmC reboot, which is perfectly understandable that they made that category). As it stands, even if you didn't do any skips, developer intended or not, your route would not be different, it'd just be longer. I was running this game without skips when it first came out and nothing was different.
I recommend learning the full game run before making statements that suggest it is necessary to have glitchless or that the current routes do not require skill. If you want to run without these techniques, be our guest. But there's really no reason beyond arbitration to have a glitchless category.
Game costs like 20 usd full price. If you want to be serious about speedrunning, most boards suggest you just get the pc copy anyway. And having a category for every release just turns boards into a bloated joke. If this were a bigger game, I'd maybe be arguing otherwise. But we have less than like 8-10 runners per category. So it's very whatever to me.
