MissRC, do you mean that ME PERSONALLY asked alotta question? Lol I know it's kind of a long post, but I really only asked if sometimes G3 can take more than 3 shots die in the finale.
Also @Loanshark, ya know I think it kinda makes sense really...about the Magnum damage/distance...if you think about it G-Embryo can take either 6 or 7 shots and I think I remember Carc saying in a video it took 7 instead of 6 because he wasn't close enough G-Embryo's big, shoulder-eye growth? Idk maybe he can chime in sometime and clarify that. And possibly bosses are the only enemies to have high enough EP for individual shots to matter lol.
I have to first
A- buy my capture card (which will be the IO GV-USB2)
and B- figure out how to connect my PS2 and TV to it, bc while I have instructions to set it up on the PC it doesnt have any online to tell me how to CONNECT IT lol. It's original instruction manual will be in Japanese bc its from Japan. But this particular capcard was recommended to me directly be Cacrinogen, so I assume its top notch and reliable.
C) then I have to repeat a submission-worthy run. Which may be hard, may not. Idk yet lol
This would make sense bc I was a BIT farther shooting G3 than the videos that show the G4-loop strat of getting him stuck, as evidenced by the fact that after he hit me that was enough to put me perfectly in that spot (which you normally have to move to on your own some steps).
I always thought the Magnum did the same amount regardless, didnt know it had damage range qualities like the Shotty.
I need big-time help if anyone is willing :)
Can some please explain to me how to use a capture card to capture PS2 games? Like even how to connect to my PS2 and TV. The exact model of card is the IO GV-USB2 (recommended to me by Carcinogen I believe), Im just very computer stupid and stuff thats obvious and known to alotta gamers in 2017 is over my head :/
I can probably figure out how to run the capture card once connected as theres a guide for that, I just need to know how to connect it the best way to the PS2 and TV without frame drop, etc etc. Do I need a splitter or 2? I can get 12th at least on the RE2 leaderboard if I can submit my runs. Thanks!
So I just completed my first TRUE speedrun of US version PS2 RE2 (Leon A). Final time 1:28:36, which crushed my former PB by like 18mins lol. Its amazing what you can learn in a week's time (this was not only my first speedrun but it was the first time I had played in like 2 weeks, was out of town ughhh!)
Anyways, had alotta good luck and RNG was extremely favorable to me, however I get to G3 Birkin, run behind him and pop off 3 Magnum rounds and not only did he bitch slap the Hell out of me but he didnt transform...what gives? I thought he changed after 3 shots in US? Was I just too late running behind him and getting set or what?
P.S. Whats hilarious is he slashed me into the perfect spot to shoot him a 4th time (upon which he did transform), and catch him in the loop where he jumps up on the tubes and just keeps jumping up there lol. The time I hit the train was pretty insane (cant recall it though, but every shot I fired normal shotting at 100% speed after he jumped up there hit him, and I was in Fine running to the Train, so do the math I guess).
Actually, I just checked and that time is good enough to claim 12th place on the PS leaderboard by like 53 secs! And 4th place on the US version leaderboard (like if you filter it to US only). I gotta order my capture card IMMEDIATELY and start recording, I want that 4th place haha. And only up from there!!!
I'm happy to say I just completed my first TRUE speedrun of RE2, wanted you to be the first to know Loanshark!!! My final time was 01:28:36 with a rank of B (not like rank matters, but I was hoping it would denote my lack of saves, and only 2 FAS's I believe.) Learning the stuff I have from videos was enough to drop my previous PB when just playing for A/S rank and fun (01:46:03) by 18mins 33 seconds!!! And this was just my first time running this route, so I think the goal I set out to achieve (a sub 1:20:00 run) is totally doable.
Yea BombaNemesis, as Caliguluke and others have said PC just needs the IGT displayed (well, in addition to the basic in general rules). Btw Caliguluke, I love the profile pic! That's my fave Leon to play as, sucha BAMF with his Magnum!
And its funny Loanshark, I thought the same thing!!! Joe vs Joe, how hilarious is that hahaha. Although, I gotta admit, ConkyJoe is my childhood nickname from my Dad, my actual name (as well as his) is Jonathan. So he called me "ConkyJoe" or "Little Conky" as nicknames...dont ask, I have NO IDEA where that came from lol. Its funnier to me not to even ask
Thanks Loanshark! That's actually easier than I thought it to be, so I may look into running PC version at a later date!
Thank you SO MUCH Roofress! Can't ask for a much better rundown than that, and I'm very relieved to find out essentially all I have to do is capture the run with audio and good frame rate (both non-issues) seeing as I run it on the PS2.
While I fully accept that the seperation of the two will never occur (and fully understand the reasons why), I do wish there were seperate Leaderboards, and I have a few reasons for that (OTHER than the fact that the US version is what I play myself).
I don't believe having the 2 seperate would drive Japanese players away, I mean their times would still be faster than a US run, correct? So it would in no way diminish the value of the runs on the JAP version, but it would INCREASE the value of US runs.
Also, when you say "lower quality, several minute slower" run, it's kind of a slap in the face to us gamers that run US version out of simple preference if what you mean by "lower quality" is that bc our runs take longer(by the very nature of our version, what with text speed and enemy placement/numbers) that it in some way diminishes the skill it took to perform that run. Some people argue it, but the simple fact is the US VERSION is a more difficult version of the game. It would take a gamer with the same experience of both versions more attempts (probably) to pull off the perfect run on US bc more enemies equals more RNG.
Now, I get that this site isn't about difficulty, and that it's about speed, hence why I said I totally get why the two versions will be forever merged. I just wish there was a way for people who run US version to get some respect and acknowledgment. Sort of in the same way that even though all console versions will always have longer times than PC, we STILL HAVE seperate console Leaderboards. If it's TRULY only about speed, then why even have a category other than PC JAP version? Lol
Well what about for PS version FurryWulfz? That's the only version I have interest in, and the US version in particular. Do I have to display both RT and IGT? Bc if I only have to show IGT why isn't the time displayed on the Final Ranking screen enough? Bc that shows the IGT if I remember correctly...
Do you know why they were rejected? Was it bc it needs both RT and IGT displayed w/ the splits?
And yes, if you could detail to me how you've gone about recording your runs w/ splits displayed that would be great! I mean all the way from how you capture the audio/video, to setting up splits, and finally applying a Watermark if that too is required.
I still have to figure out how I'm gonna set this up, as the only PC in my house isn't mine, and is in our dining room not located by a TV to play on. Whata headache.
I'm really eager to see your runs as well! And we're both running Leon A, so that's awesome. If you ever wanna ask me anything or compare notes/strategies just ask! :)
I'm new to speedrunning, but I've been playing RE2 on PS since it released in '98, and although I've yet to record a run I've written a guide on the (seemingly) optimal run for both US and JAP PS versions, comparing 4 runs (Carc's WR, a Carc 1:11:xx video on Youtube, AndehX's 5th place run on US, and larathen's 9th place run on US) to write a guide that can be used for both US and JAP version and result in a sub 1:14:00 run at the least.
I've CONTINUALLY felt like a buffoon this week, asking such simple, Rookie-ish questions here lol. But I'm new to this, and am VERY computer/technology illiterate...I mean it's bad...VERY bad.
So my question is, what is the criteria for submitting a run? Can I just capture it and send it in (which even as simple as that method is I dont know how to do lol), or does it HAVE to have a Timer/Splitter displayed somehow? I can already tell from reading about them in the forums that those will be a NIGHTMARE for me to set-up/use. My inability to adequately use PC stuff is why I've always STRICTLY been a Console gamer. Also, I see it suggested to Watermark your video to prove it's you/deter theft of Runs, and I wouldn't know how to do that either :( I'm beyond embarassed gang.
Can someone give me the requirements? And perhaps direct me to a thread that can give a Novice step-by-step instructions? Thanks SO MUCH in advance, this is very important to me, and I need help to do it by the book.
Hey no problem buddy! We're all here to help each other :)
I'm VERY new to not only speedrunning this game, but speedrunning in general, so you can see I've been asking alotta Q's on the forum myself in the past few days. Haha
(P.S. You can see my love for the Custom Magnum as I made it my Icon beside my name! Lol)
Exactly what I thought too, Darazanjoll.
Before I looked into speedrunning, my goal when playing RE2 for a hobby was just getting A's (I play US version) without saving or utilizing any FAS's. Since I didn't yet know about the various G3/G4 strats in Leon/Claire A (or Tyrant strats for the B scenarios), and I also didn't know that a G+R herb heals the same as a G+R+B minus curing Poison, I consistently created 2-3 G+R+B's (what I call a "Brown Herb" lol) to take into the final boss fights in lieu of FAS's. And I feel like I can clearly recall getting decimated by the Super Licker Hallway, as well as G4, despite popping a brown herb. I'd pop one just to immediately get grabbed by G4's Grab/Chew x3/ Throw attack and be RIGHT back in Caution.
It's settled...there are no herb "Invincibility Frames" in classic RE's...and this dude on GameFaqs is just a nut. Lol
Hey LoanShark,
I myself consistently created the Custom Magnum (I deemed it "The Boss Killer" lol) up until I started speedrunning Leon A and found 2-3 videos showing awesome (and different) routes/methods for the run...none of which involve creating the Custom Magnum. :(
As awesome as it is, it unfortunately wastes around 9-10 seconds to create it, possibly more (W. Box Key pickup, W. Box Key utilization, Magnum Parts pickup, Magnum Parts utilization). Couple that with the fact it fires MUCH slower and has horrendous kickback, which wastes even MORE seconds.
Also, at least in the US version, it takes the same number of shots (3) to make G3 transform to G4 whether you use the regular Magnum or the Custom one. To avoid being hit by G3, instead of standing still simply run behind him to his right (sort of orienting Leon between the P and L in the word "PLATFORM" written on the floor), aim down, and shoot him 3 times. Even without quickshotting, he won't turn around fast enough to strike you.
From that point, the G4 battle has it's own strats and ways it can play out. Hope this helps :)
Lol well now I feel dumb..."brown herb" is my own, personal term for the mix of a G+R+B :/ ...am I the ONLY one who thinks the glob of mixed herb looks brown?! Lol
And thanks for the reply MasterMiller, it didn't appear in videos that QS'ing was necessary, but as I said I'm unfortunately away from my console for almost a full week and unable to test on my own til then...Im losing my mind! Haha
2 questions, first is pretty standard. Is it necessary to QuickShot G3 w/ Magnum when you run behind him to trigger his G4 transformation? Or can it be pulled off with normal shots? (I play US version, thus it only takes 3 shots to trigger his transformation).
Second question is about something VERY strange (and seemingly ridiculously untrue) I read in an otherwise pretty sound GameFaqs guide. It stated that when you mix up a brown herb (G+R+B) not only does it fully heal/unpoison you, but that it grants you a few frames of invincibility. I have never in all my years of playing classic RE games heard of this (although, nor have I been able to test it either as I'm away from my console this week lol). This is malarkey, correct? Haha
