Which character combinations are the best? Most of the videos I've seen have characters like toad or koopas but does it matter? Is the only difference the special items gotten?
Weight class matters for a lot of the runs. I don't know if weight plays into speed, but I do know light-class characters get access to the barrel kart, which is one of the fastest karts in the game.
There are 3 character classes: Heavy, mid and lightweight. The key difference between these classes is that lightweights have MiniTurboes of half a second. Mid a third of a second and heavy a sixth of a second. So then as for the barrel train: Every kart has secret stats, so you can't really trust the in game stats. Besides, the barrel train is insanely fast for a lightweight kart and can deal with bumps relatively well.
The reason I choose the koopas is for sandbagging and to get triple shell to block and throw stuff on the road Toads are good as well if you can claim a shroom but it's not really possible to get it in 1st place, besides, when sandbagging you don't want golden shrooms when going for another try as they're hard to get rid off.
