what are splits

Hi. I hear the term "Splits" in Super Mario Bros A LOT. Does anybody know what it means. Thanks for helping.

Essex, England

The splits used on a timer to time individual sections of a run.

Like laps on regular timers.

That's what I thought, like LiveSplits, but I got confused when Darbian was saying that they screwed with RNG. Thanks Anyways!

Edit: I was just confused when I watched his video and I do know all about RNG.

They say that because of pseudorandomness of bowser patterns or enemy patterns (ex. Bullet bill and hammer bros.) What they mean they mess up because there's lower chance of doing it like the old days andrewg always mess up on 4-2 or bullet bill.

Many of the RNG sections in a speedrun of SMB are determined by what frame you load the enemy on. So by entering 8-3 on the same framerule every time, you'll get the same hammer bro pattern, and by entering the final room in 8-4 on the same frame, the same bowser pattern. Using framerules to manipulate RNG is usually difficult unless you're a top player.

RNG is Random Number Generation. There is no RNG in Super Mario Bros. 1. Different things happen based on what frame you get there on in this game, so that's how you know bowser hammers. It's even easier with framerules to get to a place on a very specific frame for 8-3, and even more so when the fastest way to move is just holding down 2 buttons.

Yeah I know about RNG I was just confused when I watched Darbian's video. Now that I know more about streaming, I understand what splits are.
