SMB Practice ROM

Minus World is an underwater version of the 1-1 underground LUL

@pellsson Cool ROM i just got it. My issues are that pressing right while pause causes mario to be big. This is an issue specifically for when i practice 4-1 FPG since i pause mid Air and make a savestate to practice that one from and i have to be holding right before I unpause. Also Select + A and select +B are popular savestate options for everdrives and powerpaks and giving us star power whenever we pause to make a savestate is a little annoying. Keeping the size toggle purely on the down button would be fine.

Omg small fire from title? Just when I thought I couldn't love you more

Would it be theoretically possible to create a BBG "scenario" where you always have the right subpixel? because that would be amazing... or does that get created after the jump

"Shuffling" the rule (Shift+Up) doesn't shuffle anymore... it assigns a different rule, then starts the level on the old rule - FWIW

The correct subpixel is based on the jump. The way that the BBG works is there is a range of subpixels and as long as you do the jump properly you'll always be in it.

So then no - it sounds like there's no way to eliminate "coin toss"

Texas, USA

No you cant eliminate cointoss. If you always jump at the perfect subpixel it all comes down to whether or not you interact with the bullet or the first or second frame you make contact. You want to hit it on 2nd frame to be lower for BBG to work. So cointoss can never be eliminated since it purely works at best 50% of the time because the game checks for enemy interaction every other frame.

@pellsson Yes they are much better now thank you! For BBG I guess you can find out all the possible subpixels that work. (Somewhere in the range of 0xx-3xx) to show if it was good or not. But also similar to the FPG practice rom you can do it in a similar fashion. If you want to practice it the way I do it. I have Mario facing against the wall of the stair like always. Hold Down+Right and then full jump at the time bullet is half in and half out. And then you'll want to full jump basically 2 frames after Mario starts turning when he lands. But obviously many people have their own way of doing the inputs so that may be too strict.

Honestly it would be convenient to add BBG to the "scenarios" even if that just meant having a setup with Mario running toward the staircase with the optimal bullet having been fired - and have the sockfolder inputs enabled.

There's what? Like 5 different sockfolder numbers that make BBG work... So given a list of those, you could have a display indicating that it either was successful or not successful - regardless of if it worked or not

Basically what you just said two posts up.

There's way more than than 5 Sockfolder numbers after including all the variation in jumps to bullet and plant jumps. It will be entirely different.

It's been a long time since I practiced in Sockfolder - I guess I was mistaken then... but there is a finite amount of number sets either way

2 things I would like to have:

A ) Option to disable the savestates: This rom is played mostly on everdrives /powerpaks /emulators, and all of them have built-in savestates options. Unless you are playing on a repro cart, there is no real use for that options (except maybe for restart game) and the built in ones takes priority over the catridge combinations (at least on everdrive).

B ) Is possible to add an option to disable music? Useful if you want to stream some practice and put some music, so you can have special effects sounds and listen to your music without having to mute all game sounds in the stream.

what are the controls for save states? could be useful for emulator practice with a nes controller with limited buttons.

also +1 on a mute music and a both mute music and sfx toggle.

@pellson I looked and only found this

• Save-state re-enabled (completely untested). Select+B to re-load level @ entered frame-rule. • Select+A to return to title-screen.

by save state does it mean reloading levels from start and reloading the game?

thanks

Edited by the author 5 years ago

oh ok I knew about those and they are very helpful, I thought save states might be seperate and referring to states you could save and load as you play the levels.

Yeah but "savestate" is already handled by powerpak, everdrive, or emulator - It seems to me that "savestate" would be a redundant feature - especially with the very limited button combinations that exist on a NES controller. The restart level feature is very useful though.

Edited by the author 5 years ago

Yeah savestate is not that useful, maybe if you could cycle through saves with a button, because nestopia can't, it only does one per button, or somehow hold more saves than 10 which is most emulators limit which would be useful, like have 35 practice spots for the whole game or something, but seems like lots of work, with level restart and emulators its pretty good for practice anyway.

For anyone wanting more technical information: Pellsson's server is running on a Raspberry Pi mini-computer, takes about 10-11 seconds to build a ROM out of a Warpless split file. My server (the mirror) is running on a i7-3770 dedicated server running in Germany, takes about 2-3 seconds to build a ROM out of those same splits.

I volunteered my server for you guys to get faster builds. Thank me :D

If you want to volunteer and host more mirrors, I have developed a script to auto-install the build server. Add me on Discord (Epicness#8422) for instructions on how to use this script.

Note: The server may cut in and out sometimes. I think the Node.js process ends as soon as the SSH connection is removed. If I can figure out how to get it running on start-up as a background process, I'll definitely do that so it'll run 24/7.

I'll try to pay my dedicated server bill on time too so you guys don't have downtime LUL

Less Technical Translation: The server may cut in and out sometimes because of the server stopping when I disconnect from the host.
