the only other il i could maybe potentially see being added would be -3, cause aside from that and 8-4, ils are kinda useless because of the framerule system.
also the mods probably don't wanna deal with like a million submissions for 1-1 il every day
@electricpants fun fact, there was an IL leaderboard back in the days and the insane amount of 1-1 runs to verify is a major factor of why it has been removed
also, i forgot to mention that a lot of ils have like 0 challenge to them--all you need for tied wr for 4-1 il is just a fast acceleration at the beginning of the level, and the rest of the level is, well, the easiest level in the game. same for 1-3, 1-4, 2-3, 2-4, 3-2, 6-1, and 7-3 ils as well.
ILs for this game don't really provide any value and creates a lot of work for us when the majority of submissions are going to be tied for 1st or 2nd place anyway. 1st place being people who use fast accel, BBG or FPG to go slightly faster and 2nd place for those who just run through the level.
I definitely remember the days when we did have ILs and it was a huge mess. Aside from people grinding out those, you can have the situation of where someone does a warpless run, submits that and then all 32 levels from their run as well. That's 33 submissions. From one person.
In theory, if we opened that up, I could see our submission queue going up to 200-300 in a matter of a few days based on the size of the community these days.
with framerules its pointless, if there was a category for that rom hack without frame rules, I guess, people could show off their fast accel skills, but there would still be ties probably.
If so, you can have a maximum time limit, which is set low enough so that it is unrealistic for anyone other than maybe the top players to go for it in a full-game run. For example, you must get the TAS 8-2 framerule for an 8-2 IL to be submitted. And timing should end when the time counter shows 000 after counting down, or when the screen goes black in warp zones, or when Toad starts talking in castle levels, to not take framerules into account. That opens up much more possibilities for improvements. Even in 4-1 (or any similar level), there's fast accel, dfa, no slowdown fpg, and good subpixel after fpg. It's going to be incredibly hard for someone to get all of that in a single run.
Also, most of the levels that @electricpants mentioned aren't that trivial. A 1-3 and 1-4 IL should collect the powerup or else it's meaningless. There's ground clip using a cheep cheep in 2-3/7-3. And there's ground clip using a koopa in 3-2 (which had been done by LeKukie).
no propose of defending anything, but stoping the time at the exact frame you touch the flagpole there would be no problem with the framerules system lol
Then fpg and bbg wouldn't save time because the timesave comes after touching the flagpole.
Personally, if IL runs were to be added, the timing should end when Mario enters the castle.
I chose the timing method in my post because that timing method can be directly converted to framerules + frames to spare, but Mario entering the castle still requires an IGT.
All these ideas are cool, but look at this from the POV of a mod. Imagine having to retime countless ILs every day when they already struggle to keep up with normal submissions. If we want to make it happen, we need more verifiers or literally make another SRC game just for ILs so we don't bother normal mods. It sure is a great idea to have an IL leaderboard, but updating it is gonna be way too hard
This is one of those situations where if this is really desired by a decent number of people, someone should step up and make a spreadsheet or develop their own site/database. Nothing prevents someone from doing that. I doubt another SRC page would be permitted to be created for runs involving the same game.
We got rid of the ILs long ago. So did SMB3 and some other Mario games because it was an overwhelming number of submissions (I've literally seen over 100 submissions of just ILs sitting in the queue and this was years ago when the community was not nearly this large) and many people don't find them that meaningful.
I agree with @WolfAttack and @roopert83. Although I still think this would be fun. But I agree.
Another thing that's problematic with IL runs that many people probably don't think about, is that some people record at 60fps, some at 30fps, some at 24fps, some at 50fps, and some at weird rates. Unless you're recording and running at 60fps, you probably won't even see the correct start and finish frame on the video - in a category that requires precision to the frame.
Following investigations regarding the accuracy and integrity of FCEUX, the SMB1/2J moderation team has decided that FCEUX will not be permitted for future submissions, effective September 17th, 2023. The accuracy of FCEUX has come into question following 108Pi's discovery that the current SMB1 Warp
