So, ranking on Resident Evil 5 is based off 4 different things.
Your Accuracy
Enemies routed (killed)
Deaths
Clear time

You do not have so get S on all 4 in order to get an S, an overall S is still possible as long as you get:
3 x S and 1 x A
2 x S and 2 x A
3 x S and 1 x B

So, here are the things needed to get an S on each category per sub chapter.

Boosting

This is only possible while playing co-op and online. Because of lag your co-op partner will always appear a half-step behind where they are actually placed on there own screen. This allows for both players to be running in front of there partner on there own screen. Its actually easy to set up, and almost all co-op runners boost on accident in there runs somewhere, unknowingly saving time. The very first checkpoint of the game is a perfect example. I believe every co-op run of mine features a boost at the start of 1-1. NG+ Co-op PC Normal record should have both me and Snow's POV of us boosting. Hope this is helpful

How to set up and use a fresh NG File for PC

NOTE - on the Steam version you can run the game without a save file inside C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\USERDATA\21690\remote and it saves 2-3 seconds per sub chapter. This is mainly for practicing or NG+ saves.

How to update to version 1.1.0

Some of you may be wondering why your game isn't displaying 1.1.0 in the bottom right hand corner of the title screen.

There are 3 different reasons for this:

- You are using the GFWL version
- You are using the fan patch
- Your game has not properly updated on Steam 

If you have the fan patch or GFWL version installed you need to get a completely fresh install, and make sure nothing is left in the install file when you uninstall the game.

If not, the game just hasn't shipped correctly and is on the prior update.

Here is how to fix this issue.

Keyboard Menu Navigation (& More)

## Intro

Wanted to make a quick guide going over some of the keybindings that I use for Resident Evil 5 in case someone else wants to use them.

## Example

If you've seen any of my RE5 runs, which you probably haven't, you might have wondered what the hell is going on with my keybindings. For example, in my [Lost in Nightmares](https://youtu.be/anLUPUMwboI) speedrun, you can see at [4m47s](https://youtu.be/anLUPUMwboI?t=287) that I'm using the **LEFT_ARROW** and **RIGHT_ARROW** keys to use the crank instead of **A** and **D**.

## Background

If you've played, I don't know any game released within the past decade, then you probably noticed that you can navigate the menu with **WASD** and **F** will select that menu item. Unfortunately, Resident Evil 5 is not one of those games. By default the arrow keys along with **ENTER** are used to navigate the menus without a mouse and this **cannot** be changed.  *Thanks Capcom®*.

## The Solution

To get around this limitation, I changed the movement bindings in-game from **WASD** to the arrow keys. Then, used AHK to make my physical **WASD** keys send the arrow keys (when in-game). In AHK I also made it so that **F** is bound to **ENTER**. I mentioned earlier that by default you would use **ENTER** to select a menu item without using a mouse. Like the arrow keys used to navigate the menu(s), the **ENTER** key cannot be changed. The only workaround is having AHK make the **F** key send **ENTER** instead.

This makes navigating the main menu, inventory screen, etc. able to be done with **WASD** and **F**.

I have uploaded my AHK script for RE5 [here](https://github.com/syntax-tm/AHK/blob/master/base/re5dx9_base.ahk) in case anyone wants to try it. All of my AHK scripts can be found on my GitHub in [syntax-tm/AHK](https://github.com/syntax-tm/AHK). If you want the functionality with the config editing, tray menu icons, launching the game, etc. then you'll need to download everything. Otherwise, you can use the **.ahk** file in the **base** directory. Scripts ending in "**_base.ahk**" contain **only** the keybindings and do not require any other than AHK to run.

## Known Issues

The only real "downside" to this is that the on-screen prompts will show **LEFT_ARROW** and **RIGHT_ARROW** instead of **A** and **D**. However it's extremely easy to get used to it and since the arrow keys intuitively correspond to movement. I think the pros far outweigh the costs, especially when speedrunning, but I wanted to mention it anyways.

Generic tips:
Hold open doors for each other - stand in the doorway til the person is behind you.  If not, the door will close.
Don’t ever reload automatically.  Always reload through the menu during an animation.  It’s easier if you put the ammo below the gun so it’s a quick drag-up.
Re-adjust keybinds, sensitivity, and volume if you’re not the host since you’ll be dealing with a NG joining everytime.  Host can preadjust prior to playing.
When you join, make sure the servers look like this   (Main server - RE5; backup server - host).  Sometimes you will get random flags, and you dont wanna run the game on India server
You WILL disconnect every so often, that’s part of the game.  
Quick shooting rocket - dont aim with the rocket.  Aim with gun, hotkey switch to rocket and shoot instantly,.

Generic routing:
Handgun/Grenade Launcher/Sniper vs Machine Gun (you can do either character, but for money sake you have to commit).
Heal on animations as well (aka one action while the other waits, etc).

1-1 Village

Let host go ahead.  If you’re not host, re-adjust keybinds.  

Goat scene skip - one of you go ahead first and hug the left side of the stairs, the person behind will not get the cutscene and be able to go on ahead.  Utilize and just kinda memorize where the cutscene teleports are.

First dual action door - Action, aim, dual action (first dual door, you need to investigate it first, you can aim instead of cancelling for faster animation).

Village - kill enemies with knives.  DA is 1-3 for amateur and you want to try to grab extra nades as you can as well as gold.

Around 3:40 (assuming you’re on our pace), stop killing enemies and stand in front and behind the box to the left of the gate.  Sheva will want to get grabbed (shoot the hands of the enemies to have them drop weapons) and Chris will want to be aiming at the corner where the executioner spawns.  Doing this properly will have the executioner move instantly, if not, he’ll chill for a couple of seconds.  WR 1:33:52 RTA does not do this properly.  Since nobody grabbed me during the cutscene.  Time section begins once the gate is broken.

Grab nades, follow video routing.  You want at least 1 fire, 2 frag nades.  Kill executioner since this is timed.  (2 head shots, couple melee, if you get comfortable you can toss knife hits in too).  Kill as many enemies as you can.   You will a combination of maybe 20-25 bullets (10 in gun, 15 in ammo).

Executioner treasure is worth 5,000 which we will skip a later chest for.

Good 1-1 should end at 8:40, bad one should end 8:50-9:00.

1-2 Uroboros

Run through first area.  Second area, after you open the door to the broken ladder, turn LEFT (9:29 during the WR video) and cut through.  WR does not have this as we found this out after.  Follow the routing EXACTLY for optimal movement.  Chris goes first.  Left of boxes guy, right back of grab zombie.

Run through next area.

Chris grabs furnace key while you chill in the main area.  You dont need to look at the door but Cosmic still thinks I have to so its a meme haha.  You just need to be in the main area to activate the boss after Chris grabs key.  

Uroboros.  Two routes - left is faster but “harder” to do.  Use video for visual cues.

Right route, both of you stand in oven after knocking down the gas can, shoot uroboros when he enters the oven.  You’ll get a cutscene, go out and close it.

Left route, DO NOT BREAK THE BOXES, you want the boxes on the left side so Uroboros gets routed to you closer.  Stand in line with the switch boxes and run into the oven as soon as Urboros hits the corner.  Chris will not hesitate and just go hit the switch.  You will stand in Chris’ previous spot til Uroboros lifts his “head” really high (signaling his charge), you will then run out of the oven.  Uroboros AI will always go into the oven, but won’t leave even if the door mid animation closing.  Use the time to adjust inventory however.

Run through area

2-1 Chainsaw 

Grab Machine gun.  Crisp movement into trip wires.  You want Sheva to shoot this as her aim is switch level as opposed to Chris.

Find out what routing is comfortable for this area.

Dogs are not free, but remember they will usually aggro to Chris.  (it’s usually right-left on first two dogs, left-left on last four dogs).

Next area, you’re gonna shoot both locks ahead of time for Chris twice.  First lock is easy, second lock is a bit harder but you wanna stand a bit back.  Sometimes the enemy will block you.  Open the port door, shoot your handgun if you have more than 10 bullets.  You want to be empty by Chainsaw.

Nade skip area - I dont fucking know what the cue is, just look at Cosmic’s video.  You shoot the guys ahead while he’s doing it so they dont block you later.  There is a audio cue.  

Chainsaw - runup to him together, unload all your nades.  If you missed nade skip, you’re obviously gonna have a harder time.  Unload nades, double melee, start unloading your machine gun into his head (reloading while you’re punching him through menu).

Skip treasure (if you’re unsure in the beginning, pick it up).


2-2 Mines / Bat

Follow routing, pretty simple, doesn’t matter who shoots what.

Mine, have Chris grab lantern while Sheva runs ahead.  Sheva has a smaller model so can bait out attacks easier.  Chris will run opposite her.  It’s a bit random where you can pass enemies, but follow your visual cues and experience, and you should be fine.  WR has a perfect mines so utilize that.

Do the door while Chris puts down lanterns and heals you both.

The big mine area, you want to be within a couple feet of each other, as the enemies are throwing dynamite sticks.  They’ll obviously miss Chris, but guess who gets caught in the back if you’re too far apart?  Yep, you.

Canyon - all this part is Chris.  Pickup diamon he shoots down and checkpoint reset when Chris gets the treasure on his side.   The checkpoint is the first platform down.

Inventory - sell all treasures, sell handgun (if you didnt use all bullets, you’d be left with bullets and have to menu more), upgrade machine gun 3x dmg, 3x capacity. 

Bat - Chris snipes it 2-3 times, you unload into its belly while he snipes it as well.




2-3 Driveby / Gigante

No routing, minus Gigante.  Gigante attack patterns are RNG.  Dont dodge ANY attacks minus the ground pound (you can shoot through the other attack animations).  When he looks like he’s approaching a pole, shoot the red barrel in front of it to cancel his cutscene grab.  World record video has WORST possible RNG (you can lose up to 30 seconds purely on his attack patterns).

3-1 Boat

You can drive, Chris can drive.  It does not matter.  Machine gun shouldn’t drive as you have to shoot a watch tower guy after the first piece.  If you need to heal, have the non-drive heal you on the boat.  Following routing on video.  Spam F on the first side before the first treasure if you need a beatle (1,000).

Gators suck, nothing you can do.  If the second gator spawns in the middle of the entryway, you literally have to bait it out backwards (there will also be a gator behind you so be careful).

Pick up rocket, quick shoot it at the wall where big boy and  two small boys are (see video).

3-2  Oil plant

No routing, follow video guide.  Utilize checkpoints.  At the end of this chapter, you want about 80 in the gun, 80 as ammo.  Assuming you are Machine gun Sheva.  After chapter, sell all treasures, buy as many rockets as you can.

3-3 Irving

Super straight forward, only hard part is double gatling.  You shoot left, Chris shoots right.  

Irving - dont shoot the first Irving too quickly (you need his whole body to be above water to get the kill).  Second Irving - quick shoot the water in front of Irving as it registers as a kill plain.  

4-1 cave

Shoot flash vase for Chris, straight forward, optimal movement.

Ball movement (2,3,4)  2 ball and 4 ball are the best, chill in the middle and let them bounce.  3 ball is random just try to weave.

Statues are straight forward minus the second to last statue.  Watch Chris go out of vision downstairs and count 1...2...3… and then go.  Otherwise, you will spawn Deimos too quickly and they will grab you while you wait.  See video 55:15 RTA


4-2 sun lasers

Sun laser routing is precise, that’s the best possible movement you can do.  We tried everything.

Laser puzzle is also precise.  Follow it, you want to be following a similar pace to each other so you dont instant kill laser.  After chapter, sell all treasures, buy as many rockets as you can.

5-1 crab

Run through lickers.  Hug right side to break dinwod after shutters lift.  Shoot licker to protect chris.  Run to elevator.  Run to the end of the map.  Heal while we chill in licker hallway.  Pick up shit while Chris nades them.  Grab machine gun ammo.  
Chris/Shiva to rocket.  Mouth.

5-2 Uroboros v2 

Run past guns, hold door open since you are first.
Run by guys, blow up office after stairs.  Heal next area if you must.
Run hallway past lickers.
Conveyor room -  drop down, run backwards to not trigger cutscene (or wall run)
Run to end, shoot the barrel up top while on barrel route.   Run to end, V action, double back.  Run by bug.   Drop, wait for box to pass by.   
Break second box. (Controller switch).
Sheva to rocket boss.
Buy another RPG.


5-3 Jill/Wesker

Run, grab ammo if needed. (around 200 at this point)
Run ahead as Chris stays behind to shoot ammo.  Run to battery room at the end.  Watch Bug spawn.  Get on lift and RESET.
Chris to reset the lift, you bring him to you.  Heal during elevator animation docking.  Run to end, treasure in the room to the right.
Spinning big elevator, double action, run by 2 boxes, kinda right of the big vial thing and run towards edge.  Dunno placement but it's two stops, before Chris has to rocket it.
Big room - lower the bridge.  Run all the way forward to the right.  Come back, pull level so chris can do his thing.  (shoot jewel).  shoot lickers for him (first one most important).  Watch your own licker.  Get lickers off the wall best as you can.  Cross bridge, pick up jewel.
Aim at jil (Chris, RPG) grab items.  
Not too fast.  Seven chest hits.
Sell treasures, buy rocket.

6-1 boat

Go ahead, hit checkpoint after Chris kills Switch guy (NOT BEFORE) (after big tank lift).  Reset.
Follow.  You shoot thing for chris, he shoots yours.  Pathing.
Inside ship, follow pathing.  Hug left in gun room.  Reset checkpoint when up the ladder.
Sheva to rocket gunner.  Pick up card.  Activate door when Chris picks up Card B (for checkpoint reset).
Run to the end.
Buy RPG.


6-2 Excella

F and V are dodges.  AD to climb over.
Wait for Chris to nade tentacles.  Before staris, wait for tentacle.  Left at the top of the stairs.  Kill zombie for card.
CONTROLLER
Sheva left tentacle, shoot ground things for Chris.
Buy RPG (Chris has to upgrade sniper)


6-3 Wesker

Run, left into drops.  Shoot zombie for Chris at panel.  Go left to big doors.    Defend behind Chris while he snipes.  Next room.  Left duo switch.  Defend.
Chris to flash bugs,  finish them.  Heal while waiting. 
Chris to rocket, pick up card on right one.
Checkpoint on Wesker (reset).
Run forward, shoot him.  Grab him so Chris can inject or vice versa
Final wesker, run forward trigger cutscene, QT.  Aim down at Wesker and hit the eye.
Shoot Wesker.
Timer ends when you press A+D final QTE.

SS (Single Segment) vs Segmented

Many new runners make the mistake of thinking SS means the run needs to be completed with the highest possible ranking. This is not what SS means. SS stands for Single Segment. All full game runs are SS. Segmented is only for individual level runs.	

       Segmented - The runner is allowed to restart any checkpoint as much as they'd like to for any reason (Non-tactical restarts are allowed). This allows the chapter to be beaten much faster. The game will "save" your IGT at the start of each checkpoint, allowing the runner to try the checkpoint over and over without actually losing time.
 	
       SS (Single Segment) - Only tactical resets are allowed. Basically any reset used to fix a mistake will invalidate the run. There are various reasons for a runner to reset that dont involve fixing a mistake. These include despawning enemies, managing your inventory, and spawning Chris closer to Sheva or Sheva closer Chris.  

     There are more guides on tactical and non-tactical reset that will also be helpful for new runners. I suggest looking at these as well if your unfamiliar with the RE5 speedrun.

Tactical and Non-Tactical Resets

With the IGT timing method, there's a rule that states only tactical resets can be performed. With this rule, there has been a lot of confusion about what is and what isn't classed as "tactical", which is something that needs to be cleared up.

To further understand this rule, we need to discuss four main things that happen when a reset is performed:
1) Players get a chance to edit their inventories.
2) Chris and Sheva get moved to a pre-determined location.
3) All enemies are either despawned or set back to their initial location.
4) The IGT is reset to the exact moment the checkpoint was triggered.

So what makes us have to have this rule set in place? Well, with how the IGT behaves in regards to checkpoint resets, people could essentially redo segments to get "perfect" chapter times. In order to prevent this, we've put in place that only tactical resets can be performed in a single segment run.

There are three main situations in which a tactical reset can be performed:
- To modify inventories.
- To warp one (or both) player(s) to a better location.
- To despawn enemies.

On the contrary, there are three main situations in which a non-tactical reset would be performed:
- To prevent time loss from dying.
- To get a second chance at a quick kill/good boss fight.
- To reinvite your partner back to the game after a disconnect.

In addition, ALL tactical resets must be performed immediately after a checkpoint is reached; if a considerable amount of progress OR time has passed after a checkpoint has been triggered, the run will most likely be rejected. The runners' intentions is an important factor in determining if a reset is tactical or not.

Tactical Reset Guide (NG+)

Due to how Resident Evil 5 adds up IGT (In Game Time) it can be confusing to newer runners how to properly use resetting checkpoints to save time. The point of this guide isn't to clarify what is and isn't a tactical reset (there is already a guide that) but to point out the specific areas in the game that a reset can be used to directly save time. To sum up the guide quickly any reset used to fix a mistake will invalidate the run. Every checkpoint in the game can be reset, but resetting most of them is pointless, and a few of them will actually lose you time. Below is a list of all the checkpoints that will directly save time if reset.

  1-1 and 1-2 do not have a reset point that will save time.
  2-1 - There is a walk in checkpoint after the bridge (just down the stairs) where a truck tries killing Chris and Sheva. Resetting after this checkpoint will save a few seconds. It regroups both players at the checkpoint. 
  2-2 - There is a walk in checkpoint shortly after exiting the house that's just outside the caves. After climbing a rather large ladder and jumping down off to right a little ways the checkpoint will appear. Resetting after this checkpoint will save a few seconds. It regroups both players at the checkpoint. 
  2-3 does not have a reset point that will save time.
  3-1 - There is a walk in checkpoint shortly after leaving the main swamp area. After jumping into waist deep water and running a ways steps to elevated ground will appear. Just after the top of these steps a checkpoint appears. Resetting after this checkpoint will save a few seconds. It regroups both players at the checkpoint.
  3-2 - 1. In the middle of the chapter there will be an area where fire is blocking the players path. Killing either chainsaw Majini will give the player a checkpoint (This is only consistent on amateur. Other difficulty's may require both chainsaw Majini to be killed) and resetting this checkpoint will spawn both players next to where the fire was blocking the path to the exit. Note that if fire is blocking the path before the checkpoint is gotten it will still be there after the checkpoint is reset. If done right this saves 10+ seconds, 2. There is a walk in checkpoint just after the top of the elevator that Josh activates for Chris and Sheva. Getting this checkpoint and then resetting it will spawn Josh outside the elevator. The faster Josh can get to and unlock the door the better. This saves a few seconds.
  3-3 does not have a reset point that will save time.
  4-1 - 1. After Chris and Sheva fall through the trap door where a QTE is done to not take damage a reset can be used to save time. The recovery animation from falling will be taken away, saving a couple seconds. 2. There are three different resets towards the end of the chapter that save time. They are all right after Chris and Sheva pull one of the chains that change the layout of the stairs in area. Resetting after the 3rd chain pull will turn both players around, saving about a second. Resetting after the 4th chain pull will place both playing a little closer to the stairs, making the trip down stairs to do the split chain pull a little shorter. Saves less than a second. Resetting after the 6th chain pull will place both players 2 steps closer to the boss spawn, saving about a second.
  4-2 - 1. There are two walk in checkpoints in the first area of 4-2. They are used differently from solo to co-op but resetting at either of these checkpoints will spawn the player that's farther away right next to there partner and where the checkpoint was reached. One is at the spot where Chris assists Sheva in getting across a gap to get a piece for the locked door. From here the other checkpoint is reached while running to the last door piece, right before the last dangerous sunbeam. 2. The played gets a checkpoint for every door piece put in the door. Resetting after the second door piece is put in will spawn both players at the checkpoint. This saves a lot of time. 3. At the end of the chapter there are three areas where sunbeams need to be directed in a certain way to proceed. Resetting the second area gives both players a more favorable spawn position to beat the rooms puzzle. Saves about a second.
  5-1 - There is a walk in checkpoint shortly after the first real encounter with lickers. It will be right before a set of stairs and right after the 2nd spin valve and kick door. Resetting here will regroup both players and face them towards the stairs they need to run up. Saves a couple seconds.
  5-2 - In the middle of the chapter after the first conveyor belt area there is a checkpoint a couple steps after a red door both players need to kick down. Resetting here spawns Sheva slightly closer to Chris. The time save is very small and may cause the first Majini to throw a grenade sooner. Might not be worth it...     
  6-1 - 1. There is a walk in checkpoint at the beginning of the chapter. Its just after a button is shot/ pushed (shooting it is faster) to raise a object that's in the way. Resetting at this checkpoint spawns both players together. Saves a couple seconds. 2. The very next checkpoint is also a walk in checkpoint. The checkpoint will appear shortly after climbing a ladder. Resetting here spawns both players together and saves a few seconds. 3. There is a walk in checkpoint towards the end of the chapter. The checkpoint is reached as soon as one player reaches the top of the ladder that's just before the red JJ mini boss. Resetting here spawns both players together and saves a few seconds. 4. In this same area there's a unique checkpoint that can be reset to save time. The checkpoint activates as soon as one player reaches the red keycard door after the second keycard is grabbed. The player who grabbed the first keycard can stand by the door while the other player grabs the second keycard. Resetting this correctly can save about 10 seconds. 
  6-2 and 6-3 do not have a reset point that saves time.

     Note that the way these resets are used to save time vary from solo to co-op, and some of them aren't possible solo. I hope this guide helps clear up any confusion about tactical resets for newer players and helps people who have been playing for a couple months save more time. GL with your runs!

What to do if your game isn't opening after a fresh install.

So, one of the main reasons people go to the fan patch is that when a lot of people install this game it just won't open.
This is because your xlive.dll is out of date, while the game no longer runs off GFWL it still needs this file to be up to date in order to open it, and the game seems to install an older version.

So, download this xlive.dll

And place it in here.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Resident Evil 5

This also avoids some instances where the game will open but in GFWL mode.
