My question is: Can the "SNES Classic Mini" be used to run SMW? I am aware that Dots tested it and the frame rate was slower with the classic running at 60fps and the original console running at 60.09fps. I don't really care about that I just want to know if speedrun.com allows that system to be used to run SMW on it. I saw also that they listed it as a console that this game was on the main page of SMW, but I'm not sure if they are saying that it is ok to run it on that system or if I need to run it on the original console. Cheers. -dram_special
Yes, it's allowed. However, you cannot execute 0 exit or the cloud glitch on a Classic using the normal setup, to my knowledge. The Wii U setup may work.
@Moo_Moony Yes you can the snes classic has the exact same ROM data as the original console, as well as all of the other games. I probably won't even do my run on the classic I was just wondering if I was possible.
The ROMs being the same doesn't necessarily mean that you can pull the same glitches off. The emulators in play are imperfect and crash under circumstances that the original games could have recovered from, such as jumping to open bus (as the Cloud item swap glitch does).
Ho okay, so it possible but the odd that happens is smaller than the console original ? Thanks for the information!
@Moo_Moony @tinahacks @twitchmasta123 correction I found a spreadsheet Dots posted a while back, the orb can be performed but not the credits warp or cloud glitch https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZwK0KEknOq_jQvh03ffABc0TQ3rg6xkNGBs-ZPOwGBQ/htmlview
I never mentioned orb. Orb is a completely different setup, as similar as they look, and orb works on any system.
The reason for this being, at least to the best of my knowledge, that an item swap via chuck eat should always crash the game if you are small Mario. The current cloud setup, however, writes two bytes of ACE to prevent the crash. During orb, you have a fire flower so this isn't an issue. And since other systems handle ACE, or the open bus that Tina mentioned, differently than a SNES, it will not work on several systems, such as the Classic. Sethbling, however, has managed to install his jailbreak on Wii U VC, which would lead me to think that there would be a way to pull it off with an adjusted setup, but the current SNES setup, in theory, will not work on a Classic.
