We all know that the piranha plant at the entrance to the second room of 8-4 disappears, always. Do we know why?

Back when I played PAL I actually was able to die to it

Yeah in the PAL version I have died multiple times to that plant, not sure why

But in NTSC it always disappears, and I am wondering why

If you backwards jump after the three goombas on the wall before the lava and you try to quickly go in the pipe he kills you. I will send footage of this occurring if nobody can replicate this.
