What is the line between allowed or not, when it comes to exploits?
I see some exploits allowed and that many runners do as for example; Kill the dragon with the bed. And I also saw on the twitch some runners doing that xray using the composter and a block of sand.
The question is, why are these allowed and the others not? this selectivity bothers me.
thanks
Killing the dragon with beds is NOT an exploit. Beds exploding in the end and nether is [Intentional Game Design] and is completely legal in speedruns. Xray bugs aren't allowed in Glitchless runs to my knowledge, so you must've seen somebody attempting an any% run.
Are you telling me that [Intentional Game Design] was originally intended to kill the dragon? I think the intention was not to let the player sleep in other dimensions.
Since it was not made for this, using it to take advantage is an Exploit.
No.. it's not?
Just because the [Intentional Game Design] wasn't made to kill the Ender Dragon doesn't mean it's an exploit. That's essentially like saying "taking advantage of lava pools for a Nether Portal is an exploit." I guarantee lava pools weren't made for making quick Nether Portals. Beds weren't made for damaging the dragon. It's NOT an exploit.
It's literally just using a game mechanic. It's meant to explode in the nether and the end, from 1.0 you were free to do whatever you want with that
You have been able to use beds to kill the dragon for 9 years. That's 9 years Mojang would've patched it if it was an exploit. An exploit is a glitch in the game. Beds exploding isn't a glitch. Learn what you're talking about before you speak please
Yeah, it's literally called [Intentional Game Design]. If it explodes, it's gonna deal damage by default.
I'm pretty sure in one of the official book guides they say to use beds to help defeat the ender dragon soooooo
@CaptainSkrooog The xray from the composter is not allowed in glitchless runs but would be in glitched. For the beds, it is entirely legal to use them to kill the dragon. Feel free not to use them though, but you'll be at a massive disadvantage. Definition of exploit: "make use of (a situation) in a way considered unfair or underhand". Using beds is not unfair and are designed as mentioned before to explode outside of the overworld, hence: [Intentional Game Design] if you're killed by one. It's just being smart with resources. Same goes with something more obscure like using TNT if you really wanted to kill the dragon that way or finding ancient debris with beds in the nether. Hope that helps you out a bit and clears a few things
And making the portal fast with water and lava is not an exploit ????? it’s a game mechanic the lava source becomes obsidian, i know it wasn’t made for that, and we use it for that.
I don't know why the word EXPLOIT is so scary, maybe it has another meaning for you.
@Edit: thanks KingLavaCactus, i got it now THX
I believed that exploit was simply using game mechanics to your advantage, whether it was fair or not.
It clearly does. We are using the actual definition, found in @KingLavaCactus 's post, and @jag2791 's post talks about how the OFFICIAL MINECRAFT GUIDES tell you to use beds to beat the dragon.
Edit: Now that you've edited your post, there is no reason for my post to exist XD
@Saori: "Learn what you're talking about before you speak please" well I came here to ask with the intention of learning, are you bothered by the useless topic for you who already know everything? Sorry
Ah, I see. You were talking about the literary term. In that case your right.
exploit: make full use of and derive benefit from (a resource)
I thought you meant something that was malicious or giving you an unfair advantage
@jag2791 i get it.
so the difference is that some exploits most runners do, and other exploits nobody does, making it unfair if you do it? because if everyone does an unfair exploit it wouldn't be unfair right?
of course, exploits that involve glitch are already unfair at all, but let's say someone discovers a new exploit that doesn't involve glitch or bug, just a game design who no one knows and use it on a run, thats unfair?
No, I'd say it would be fine to use it. Again, like what the others said, I too believe that it's just another way of using the resources you have in a different way. I think that is a fair way to do your runs. But as for x-ray and similar stuff, since the dev's never intentionally coded the game to do that, it's a glitch and therefore cheating. (Sorry if that's a bad explanation lol)
@CaptainSkrooog Just stick with if it uses game mechanics and doesn't involve a glitch, it's all good. Take the ender dragon fight for example, there had to be a first person to do it with beds, people learn from the best, with new tactics and techniques. It's not unfair, they were just the first.
