A Long Ago Run that Should Have Been WR

The analyzed run: The runner's channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/mynski/featured

I started speedrunning not too long ago (around December last year) and I didn't really have the experience that most good runners do have. (I still don't XD) So, to gain experience, I watched top level runs. This was one of the very first runs I watched when I was new to speedrunning, and let me just say that I am amazed with the mechanics of the run and how it was executed. This quickly became one of my favorite runs to watch.

I wanted to make a thread on it for a long time now but I lacked the speedrunning knowledge and terminology to describe the run in full detail. Also, people seem to really be irked when other people bring up runs and scandals that were discussed in full detail a long time ago (thank you, Dream), but I just wanted to share the run with people who see this because in my opinion, it's a really cool run. His run also puts him in position as a top 15 run today, so it's worth looking at even now, in 2022. So please don't bully me.

Let's jump into the case.

On April 14, 2021, an unknown Minecraft runner named Mynski (Canada) broke the Minecraft 1.16 RSG world record, which at the time was 11:10 IGT by TheeSizzler (11:07 IGT after retime). Mynski got an RTA of 11:10, which was a perfect tie with TheeSizzler's IGT, but he accidentally reset his timer after the run ended. However, shortly after resetting the timer, it displays the IGT, which was 11:03. Mynski's run was later retimed to 11:01 and almost became the first sub 11 in MC speedrunning history.

If you've never heard of Mynski before, that's because he was an 100% unknown. He wasn't publicly active in the community, and his speedrun.com account was created the day before the run. If Mynski wanted to fake runs and build trust without putting in time and effort, it would look like that. But that doesn't mean that he cheated. He just has to prove the run's legitimacy harder than anybody else.

(If you look on the leaderboards, you won't find the run there. That's because Mynski, at the time of the run, didn't have any previous submissions, so his run was left unverified since he wasn't an "established runner".)

I will briefly state the splits below and compare it to Sizzler's splits (recorded in RTA): 0:00 - Spawns (on par with Sizzler) 3:59 - Enters Nether (1:04 slower than Sizzler) 4:44 - Enters bastion (1:22 faster than Sizzler, although it's worth mentioning that Sizzler entered the fortress before entering the bastion) 7:31 - Enters fortreess (3:33 slower than Sizzler, although it's worth mentioning that Mynski entered the bastion before entering the fortress) 8:37 - Blind travels (0:16 slower than Sizzler) 9:39 - Enters stronghold and portalrooms (0:13 faster than Sizzler, although it's worth mentioning that Sizzler killed himself before entering the stronghold to regain health) 9:45 - Enters End (0:13 faster than Sizzler) 11:10 - Kills Dragon (0:09 faster than Sizzler)

So, now that you have the splits, it's time to go into the run and see what makes this run so unique from the others of its time. I'll also go into details that could support either side of the argument that he may have possibly cheated in the run.

The video starts with Mynski in a swamp at 3:11. He finds nothing useful and resets.

He spawns on the coast of an ocean. Making use of the trees nearby, he grabs enough wood for a wooden axe, three doors (for a portal), four bowls (for stew), a crafting table, and extra wood. He sets off to the ocean at 0:52.

At 1:19, Mynski spots a shipwreck. He pulls a really good food chest (13 carrots and 3 suspicious stew) and 7 iron, which is all he needs for the run. He crafts an extra iron ingot to make a shovel; makes a pickaxe, a shovel, and a bucket; and starts mining the gravel for flint. After some below-average RNG (imo), he gets the flint. Mynski is now ready to enter the Nether.

At 2:32, Mynski spots a magma ravine. He heads down, and from his view we can see a major time loss of the run. From what we can see, there is no magma in the right formation, which is unfortunate for Mynski. After some unclean navigation, he finds a lava pool in a very inconvenient location. Nevertheless, he gets his portal done. and enters at 3:59.

3:59 is a good Nether entry time for a sub 20 pace, but it is really slow for a WR run. Runners generally try to aim for a sub 3 enter, maybe even sub 2, but it just wasn't possible with the combination of the bad ravine and the obscure pool. But there is something even more shocking about the run, which becomes evident in the Nether. Mynski does not use the F3 screen.

Many people can use the argument that Illumina doesn't use the F3 screen and he still manages to get top level times in 1.16 RSG, but it cannot be denied that using the F3 screen is an advantage. Putting the lack of that advantage along with the four minute enter, many people may think that this run would have no shot at being a WR.

Mynski looks around for a bastion and spots one. As he heads towards it, he attempts to break a block. (This is a common strategy used by no F3 runners, as the block breaking can show the cardinal direction, helping runners to make predictions as to where they are going and where the quadrants are.)

Mynski arrives at the housing bastion at 4:44 and triggers the top-down manhunt route by punching a piglin, although he can't break the triple chest at the top of the rampart. After getting the piglins in the bartering hole and giving the piglins the gold and crafting golden carrots, he loots the chest at the bottom of housing, where, to his relief, he pulls 10 obsidian. After getting the trades he needs, Mynski leaves the bastion at 6:37. (You may notice that Mynski's splits grow less and less as the run progresses, which I don't think is typical of a normal 1.16 RSG run.)

Mynski spots a fortress at 7:08 and pearls to it, getting to the spawner at 7:31. Up until now, the run has been at a solid sub 20 pace, but after the fortress entry, Mynski's speed increases drastically. He goes 6 for 9 on blaze rod drops and sets up his blind portal at the blaze spanwer, which means his blaze fight lasts for 1:06, which is an unbelievably amazing split. He blinds at 8:37. (An "advantage" of no F3 runs is that you can blind the second you are done with your blaze fight. This isn't generally an advantage, but in rare cases (such as Mynski's) where the stronghold may spawn in a less probable location, it can save lots of time.) Mynski has been going at the slowest possible pace for a WR, so this blind has to be good.

Mynski's portal leads him onto a lake in the middle of a forest, which doesn't look like a good blind at first. He throws his eye, notes the angle, and throws two pearls in that direction to get through the forest. He finds an ocean and sets sail at 9:09, where something unexpected happens. After less than 20 seconds of ocean travel (at 9:28), Mynski finds the stronghold. The first room that loads into view is the portal room, meaning Mynski enters the end at 9:45.

With a Nether to End split of 0:58 (which is the second best split I've ever seen, behind Brentilda's), Mynski managed to kep his run, which had the lowest possible chance of contending for WR, to the pace where it is possible. Even now, in the End, it's still not likely that he can break it, especially after getting an underground spawn.

Mynski is in position for the dragon to perform a north/south perch at 10:30. Regardless of the cheating question, the one cycle is amazing.

I've gotten a lot of enjoyment from seeing WR one cycles, Illumina's no F3 one cycles, and four bed one cycles. If you want those three things rolled into one, well, just watch the end of the run.

All the times I have stated above have been recorded in RTA, so please do not get confused as to what the timings are in respect to IGT; you can always watch the original run itself.

You can probably see after watching the run why it's one of my favorite runs of all time. We just saw a run go from solid sub 20 pace to beating the WR and almost clutching out the first sub 11. However, the controversy does not end there. Now that I've gone over the run, let's get into the arguments for and against the run.

ARGUMENTS AGAINST:

  • Mynski is completely unknown. He hasn't been very active in the MC speedrunning community and his speedrun.com account was created the day before the run. He isn't an established runner, and the only video on his YT channel (worryingly) was his WR run.
  • The run has insanely weird splits. He enters the Nether at four minutes and leaves four and a half minutes later, and gets a Nether to End split of just under a minute. These are almost unhuman splits.
  • Mynski doesn't use F3. (Yes, I am aware that Illumina doesn't either, but it is something to keep in mind.) Even though he can't pinpoint the exact location of the quadrants and even though the run was far from played perfectly, he never had any routing mistakes. He also didn't have to spend lots of time looking for something.
  • Mynski has terrible reset efficiency. The spawn of the run was what most pro speedrunners would pass off as a bad seed, but for some reason Mynski decides to take advantage of it. (Reset efficiency is knowing what is a good seed and what is a bad seed and either taking advantage of the seed or resetting.)

ARGUMENTS FOR:

  • Mynski demonstrates very good mechanics in his run. He uses hotkeys and quickly manages to loot the shipwreck. Even after an unclean portal creation, he still plays well in the bastion, which is all right. (By the way, shortly after Mynski leaves for the ocean after the start of the run, he does some extremely clean hotbar management, utilizing his offhand.)
  • There are many things that seem so obvious to me that you should do when you fake a WR that Mynski didn't do. For example, if you want to fake a WR, you should first fake a run that's high enough to be verified by the moderators, but not high enough to attract outside attention to yourself. If you couldn't trick the mods, you could disappear and never come back. If you could trick the mods, then you could go for the WR, knowing that you can get away with it, since you're an established runner. Also, if you want to fake a WR, why do it so close to the old one? So, there are things that make common sense to do when faking a WR that Mynski didn't do.

My general consensus is that, although the run is more likely than the average WR run to be faked, I think it most likely wasn't faked, and that Mynski had gotten a hard-earned world record.

I hope you enjoyed reading the thread and watching the run as much as I did, if you want help on speedrunning strats or want to see another thread like this, then please let me know in the thread comments. Thank you!

most people dont believe he cheated, the run only got rejected due to lack of evidence, it was never confirmed real or fake

no more threads like this plz, pretty sure its unnecessary and ya know it started shit in the tread, also u should ask mods about runs and why they weren't verified in the 1st place instead of making a 12 page essay on why it should be verified

United States

i didnt make a statement as to why it should be verified, i just wanted to analyze the run, thats all
