Most common is desert I think and if you want to look for them best biomes are desert plains and savanna try not to go to forests or snowy places as lava pools are pretty rare there
@bliwark If you haven't already turn on subtitles, you might get lucky and hear "lave pops" while running around. Or you could test your luck and just dig down randomly and hope for the best you hear one at a lower Y level. If you're near a dark oak forest it's quite easy to spot one as all the trees are on fire and it spreads quite far because of how dense it is (although I don't believe they spawn more often, just easier to spot from far away).
There's also a pretty consistent but slow method here:
If you dig down by a pool of water, you have a higher chance to find lava. It's what I tend to do if I can't see a lava pool and there isn't a good cave.
Deserts have more lava pools. Oceans are a possibility for a magma ravine portal.
Or you can watch k4’s vid and learn lava dowsing.
They spawn quite a bit in deserts, but they spawn in any biome (except for the rare weird ones but those have no speedrun capability). the ones that are open are the ones you are more likely to see a lava pool. all the answers above are helpful, especially the ocean one, I recommend practicing building underwater portals. also if you see a tree burning there is a lava pool there.
