### Notes

- On gymkhana academy when you get bronze, retire from the event and you will still get the medal. See the [Gymkhana Skip guide](https://www.speedrun.com/dirt_3/guides/pin5a) for further details. 
- Use [dialogue skip](https://www.speedrun.com/dirt_3/guides/du1mn) to skip past menu narration and menu tutorial cutscenes. 
- Some events can skip stages using a skip called DNF skip. See the [guide](https://www.speedrun.com/dirt_3/guides/uy58e) for further details. 
- Set language to Spanish for faster load times when returning from a race back to the frontend menus.
- Recommended to start the run on difficulty 1 to set up for the first DNF skip in Season 3 and reduce additional menuing. This can be done by setting the difficulty in quick race outside of career mode. 
- If both Le Seuil Legends (S4) and Safari Sprint (S4) DNF skips result in 2nd place then you will be below the total points necessary to unlock the finals. There is only a buffer of one 2nd place. In the case that both are 2nd place, either replay one of the tracks or for safety play Oppland Classic (S3 DNF skip) to make up the missing 10 points for a time loss of around 8.5 minutes.

Dialogue Skip

Dialogue skips can occur whenever the game is affected by lag. Because of this, there are multiple ways to induce a dialogue skip.

The easiest and fastest method is by a manipulation of window resizing or window moving (PC only). Originally discovered by FireFox.

1. Start with your game set into windowed mode (alt-enter if you're in fullscreen).
2. Place your mouse over the corner or the side of the game window so the cursor turns into that double-arrow symbol or on the op of the window.
3. Whenever dialogue comes up, click and hold with the left-mouse button until the audio cuts out. This essentially tricks the game into thinking the window is being resized/being moved.
4. Release the mouse button to resume. When done correctly, dialogue skip can be executed in less than half a second with no overhead of your screen going blank from the alt-enter method of going from windowed to full-screen etc.

Alternatively you can also press alt-enter to trigger the game from toggling between fullscreen and windowed mode, which can also cut the dialogue out (also PC exclusive). Originally discovered by tSu_nAmi.

A simple and random lag spike at the right moment can also result in dialogue skip, such as your device throttling down due to excess heat (we don't recommend trying this one). Originally discovered by FireFox. 

DNF Skip

Play a Rally or Trailblazer stage.
Don't move once the game tells you to start.
Wait for the "GET MOVING" countdown to end.
Make up the penalty time over the rest of the stages by setting the difficulty to level 1.
Win the event.

Important note: Set the difficulty to level 5 or 6 (6 is recommended) on the stage you are skipping to reduce the penalty time gained. Penalty time is calculated by adding a minute onto the last-place time, and so by setting the difficulty high it reduces the time gap between first and last place of the AI, reducing the time you need to make up. This is mandatory to skip races and still win for some events. Set difficulty 1 for all other stages.

Gymkhana Skip Tutorial (Season 1)

Gymkhana Skip is essential for Season 1 as it lets you skip a pretty significant chunk of the gymkhana tutorial missions (spin, smash etc.). It's about as simple a skip as they come. To do it successfully, you need to earn a bronze medal in the gymkhana tutorial missions, and then retire through the in game menu. This will quit the event, and the game will see you as having earned a bronze medal. Trying this in the actual event as the season ender won't work, and will give you a DNF instead. This skip is currently banned in NMG, and using it there will likely have your run moved to standard season 1.

How to fix game crashing in Windows 11

The problem seems to be caused by high framerate. To cap the maximum framerate on systems that use NVIDIA graphics cards-

1. Search and open NVIDIA Control Panel

2. Click on "Manage 3D settings"

3. Click the "Program Settings" tab

4. Click the "Add" button in the "Select a program to customize" section and locate the Dirt 3 executable to add it as a program to customise. This can be found by going into Steam and right-clicking on the game, Manage -> Browse Local Files and finding "dirt3_game.exe"

5. In the "Specify the settings for this program section, scroll to and locate the "Max Frame Rate" option. Click on this option to open a menu that should specify three radio buttons, "Use global setting", "Off" or "On"

6. Select the "On" option and adjust a slider to your preferred framerate. Has been tested successfully at 240fps which is what I would recommend. 

7. Hit "Ok".

8. Hit "Apply" that should appear on the bottom-right of the control panel.

9. Restart and enjoy the game. 

Recommended Pre-Run Setup + Language Selection

-Difficulty 5 (or the highest difficulty you are comfortable with). This is to maximise how competent the ai drivers are. Having to overtake the ai multiple times in a race is no good. Exceptions to this are for DNF skip routing.
-All assists turned off, especially ABS. You can slow down significantly faster with ABS turned off. 
Exceptions to this are gears and damage. Automatic or manual gears are personal preference, however automatic gears will need good throttle management to use efficiently. Obviously turn damage completely off. 

Language:
-Choose Spanish. Why? 
When doing dialogue skip, Spanish audio files seem to cut out faster and for some reason speeds up loads when returning to the front end compared to English. Current theory is that because the Spanish speakers are faster, the audio files are smaller and can load faster. Evidence for this can be found by comparing runs between different languages when doing Gymkhana Academy is Season 1. Spanish saves around 3-4 seconds in that section alone.
-To set your language (Steam):
1. Right-click Dirt 3 in your Steam library
2. Select "Properties"
3. Select the "Language" tab
4. Select "Español" from the drop down menu 
5. Launch the game

Save File Management (PC)

A quick little guide to importing the save files you'll find under resources, with help from PojeBunny:
- Open DiRT 3 and create as many new profiles as saves you want to import
- Close the game
- Number your save files as you want them ordered, there are 17 files for each profile which have to be numbered the same, edit each individual file's number to follow on from your already existing files
- Copy the now re-numbered files into the save file directory (wherever your steam install is \ userdata \ your profile ID \ 321040 \ remote)
- Open the game
- Your save files should be in the opening screen, assuming you've done everything right
- Edit the settings to your liking, as they will have the settings of whoever posted the files initially
- Enjoy

The Respawn Glitch

Here we are, almost 1 month later and here I am with DiRT 3's respawn glitch

Here is an example of the correct spawn glitch:

Details:
This method can save up to 0.3s, results of the spawn glitch could deminish on maps with bumpy or sloped starts such as Leopard Rock and Hafjell Descent are 2 examples.

This guide talks about how to do the spawn glitch, and how you know if you have done it incorrectly.

The way I do my spawn glitch is that I try to match a piece of environment and when I see it either enter or leave the screen, I will pause the game and press "restart", this way, it makes the spawn glitch easier to time and thus, more consistent. This would later be necessary because this glitch would cost around 16% of run time assuming your run is 2 minutes long which is around average for a DiRT 3 IL run.

I also recommend to try not to do a spot on the end of a banked or bumpy corner as that would make it more difficult because your angle could be off by enough to make it difficult to perform the spawn glitch.

How to know if you did it correctly or incorrectly:

If you do it too early, you will notice that the restart animation is very similar to normal, you will notice that it might look glitchy and you could also see remnants of the start line in the form of horizontal and vertical lines.

If you do it too late, it will be the opposite way around, you will see remnants of the out of bounds respawn such as the respawn animation or camera angle before you have been sent to the start line when you press restart.

If you did the spawn glitch correctly, you will be sent to the restart point, however, you will see that you get respawned at the default respawn point if you go behind the finish line.
