Announcement- New Head 2 Head IL Categories

Hi all, it has recent come to our attention that Head 2 Head tracks can have quite major time differences depending on if you start on the left or right lanes during an event. Because of this, H2H tracks have now been split between L and R variants of the track on the leaderboards. All previous runs have been automatically moved over to their correct categories, so any existing runs should not be affected by this change.

Note that to access the side of the track that is not accessible in time trials requires doing the run in other race modes. Regular IL rules such as no contact with other cars still apply.

This disparity only exists on Buttermilk Descent due to it's checkpoint skipping cut though, nobody is going to run the other variant since:

  1. it doesn't fit into the D3 time trial, therefore you can't include ghosts in your attempts.
  2. every other Head 2 Head event doesn't have this significant time difference of which side you start on (0.3s maximally) with the exception of Buttermilk Descent.

i would like to suggest instead that on Buttermilk Descent exclusively you implement a checkpoint skip category (which was the goal of this in the first place) since it is highly unlikely across all combinations of D3 tracks (74 tracks) there is a significant cut in a game breaking fashion to justify its own category.

While i haven't confirmed this yet, I believe Buttermilk Descent is the only track susceptible to this cut due to Buttermilk Descent's nearly unique format with the track

  1. Racing over itself
  2. having checkpoint markers in an exposed location off-track.
  3. The lap itself being rather long, allowing you to skip entire checkpoints doing this.

While i do understand what you were going for and the intent behind it, the justification for this isn't valid for other Head 2 Head tracks due to these points.

The main goal with this is future proofing, as we currently don't know the exact reason behind the cut, which does mean there's potential for similar shenanigans on other H2H, though you are right they will most likely remain empty for now since we currently don't understand the checkpoint system well enough to start pointing fingers at what is and isn't possible. Further more if there does happen to be enough of a difference for something like a 0.3s time difference that would be reason enough to separate them, since stuff like that is a definitive advantage.

Probably does make most sense to only separate L and R variants only for Buttermilk Decent though, and add variants as needed if more similar left vs right difference present itself.

it doesn't fit into the D3 time trial, therefore you can't include ghosts in your attempts.

Not sure how this is relevant? ILs aren't reliant on the time trial mode nor ghosts?
