The timer starts the frame that you see "400" on the clock in 1-1, and ends on the frame you hit the axe/frame everything disappears when hitting the axe.

So I used the regular ROM for Super Mario Bros for quite a while, but eventually I stopped liking the light blue background so today I took FCEUX's hex editor to change all of the 22 22 values to 11 11. Sweet! I love your route for wrong warp! The one on 5-1 I accidentally did on my 3DS. Also, if you wait by the little stair case that has another staircase behind it (the one that has a Hammer Bro) then after a few secs he will clip thru the block!

Sub 5 means to beat the game in under 5 minutes. They call it this because a time this fast is considered legendary.

I make TASes of SMB 1 pretty often, and I always see people on YouTube with to separate times, one Real Time Attack and the other Tool Assisted Speed timing. I just subtract the first frame I see "400" on the timer from the frame I see Mario touch the Axe. Then my runs are like 5:07, when they are like 4:58 pace. IDK. Thanks so much for help ;)

A good online emulator to play SMB 1 on is arcadespot.com. It has loads of Super Mario Games (pretty much all the ones that came out for SNES and NES). This was the way I used to play SMB 1, But now I have FCEUX and 3DS version. Still, A great way to play retro games at school. Haha!
