It isn't arbitrary at all, it's clearly an intended pathway through the game.
i question the validity of that run. going for bullet bill glitch in 2008 yet can't get down a pipe or jump up stairs?
The first step to getting a category up is to do a run of it. We won't put up any empty cats at this point
For Coinless i'm not too sure how viable it is warpless, or if it is at all (2-3? etc). Here's an old thread where AndrewG talked about Coinless http://www.nesfiles.com/Forum-Archives/Super-Mario-Bros/0/3371/
Emu The use of emu-only functions or controls that are not possible on an original NES controller is not allowed on the leaderboards. For example, using opposite cardinal direction inputs at the same time. No TAS of any kind is allowed on speedrun.com.
Be prepared to submit an input file or video of attempt sessions if there is any question about a run. You must use an accurate emulator - check SMB1 standard rules for acceptable emulators.
Timing Timing starts the frame 400 appears at the beginning of 1-1 (SDA Timing) in all categories except Glitchless, where timing begins upon selecting 1 PLAYER GAME in first quest (SRL Timing). All categories begin in first quest, except for "Second Quest" and "Second Quest Warpless," which begin their timing the frame 400 appears at the beginning of 1-1 in second quest.
Beating the game is defined as touching the axe in first quest except where otherwise noted in category rules. Exceptions are the Second Quest categories and All Water Areas.
In categories that beat the game or a world, timing ends the frame Mario touches the golden axe. Moderators will make corrections to times in cases of error. In categories that do not beat the game, timing is detailed in the rules.
Multiple consoles / TVs, simultaneous play, and cutscene play are all banned.
Level Select Warp Level select / second quest is allowed in categories that do not beat the game, however beating the game is globally defined as beating Bowser in first quest. The "Second Quest," "Second Quest Warpless," and "All Water Areas" categories only require Bowser to be beaten in Second Quest.
2 Player Mode It is possible to game over in two player mode and "game over warp" the other player to whatever world was died on. Using this is banned in all categories. Using two player mode at all is banned except in co-op, where it is required.
Streaming / Input Files A video of the run is currently required for all submissions. It is possible that a recording of the attempt session could be asked for. If you used emu you may be asked for an input file. Streaming is highly encouraged. The quality of the stream is unimportant as long as it is possible to verify the run. Standard NES aspect ratio is recommended.
It does have its own page but we do all of the games together.
I'm recommending for SMW 96 Exit to allow glitches (unlike the original category)
Also, Dots has a run of Warpless, i don't know if it's recorded.
FInally, my All Five run from before these categories were made fixed the game order and disallowed S+Q in order tmake it less of a dupe category / set it apart . I like the idea of true any% for SMW over required 11 exit or NMG as well. Maybe should rename the category All Five No S+Q? Or it could be true any% in all the games which would be fine too, just not what I did in my runs (roop did a no s+q run too, in a race with me)
There's an ending for high score, and there is at least one recorded run that I know of, and several more historic runs (it used to be the way to run the game, many years ago). It's basically "Good Ending" if I'm not mistaken. I would like to run it one day. It requires getting a lot of hidden gems and making extensive use of Launchpad. Nothing that should be added right now but hopefully in the future!
Another run that is good is "3 Mode," beating easy, normal, and difficult single segment.
Just some thoughts! I love categories
Mainly because there aren't that many runs of it out there. I can't remember who it was but at least 1 person I remember ran 100% SNES. I have done runs of Any% and Warpless on SNES for some reason.
I would say the SMB2 runs need to be moved to the SMB2 page, as "SNES" categories, rather than being on the All Stars page. It's a bit of work so it just hasn't been done yet.
I am unhappy that I didn't get to read any of the pointless bickering, lol
It's testing season and I've not been around. I hope it was juicy
Not a big fan of just a warpless run of 2nd quest by itself, but Both Quests Warpless is a good run. I think part of the point of 2nd quest is that you have to beat 1st quest to get to it. It's your "reward." It only has been RTAed in modern times by myself, that I know of, but it was raced several times. I consider this the true full completion of the game. Fast 1-2 in 2nd quest is fun.
Definitely would like to see ILs in 2nd quest added.
I can't imagine anyone considering "Any% 2nd Quest" as a run. You would just menu warp to 8-1 after doing any%, then world 8 is the same as before.
Love the idea of the All Stars smb1 both quests warpless run. I had also thought about an All Quests Warpless run of SMAS (Mario 1 BQW, Lost Levels D-4 Warpless, Mario 2 All Characters Warpless, Mario 3 BQW). The ultimate long run.
All Coin Heavens is ofc something I made up for fun times. Nick and I had a back & forth for awhile. Probably was raced at some point. The funny thing about ACH is that you don't have to do anything in order, and it uses soft resets. The best way to do ACH is to go for the warp to 5-1 first. The record requires 1st try zip. ACH Warpless is a slightly better run. Neither need to be tracked, lol.
1 Warp is a good category and has good precedent in terms of other Mario games. Would be fun to see it run and tracked.
Small Mario Only as a category is pointless in this game in my opinion, as it has been the preferred method of running warpless itself for many players. This is clearly a dupe. SMB3 and SMW, on the other hand...
500 coins was a lol category for a 1 off race. It does have precedent with nintendo themselves, however, as 50 coins was the first Mario race, performed by a bunch of kids at the Nintendo World Championships, and that goal is found on the infamous NWC cartridges. 500 coins was extremely fun to route, I think Kosmic and Nick both helped. Death abuses were attempted in 1-2 (it has a ton of coins so you get 1ups and can farm). Can't even remember what optimal route was. As far as I know there aren't 1000 coins in 1st quest, but whatever is fairly close to max coins with a reasonable amount of coins from coin blocks would be fun.
Glitchless seems a bit pointless, I suppose. The Twin Galaxies rule-set would be used, I know, but just seems bad mostly.
mind to change me to Barnowl instead of BarnOwl? Thanks!
Both Quests Warpless is a good race category. We never raced "beat second quest," because you would just menu warp to 8-1 - and it's true that world 8 is the same. There are plenty of differences in worlds 1 through 7, however. BQW has about 7 or 8 times out there, maybe more. It is a viable option for RTA.
