Oh yeah right, you used subcategories for the systems. If you want to keep that, then of course you can't hide the category too much. There would be number of ways to deal with this:

 • Use variables for ID/WW
 • Separate the categories by system again
 • Make separate game pages

Some games really don't make it easy for leaderboards xD

Depending on how bad any% will be to run, you might as well even have it as a misc. category.

Switzerlandandypanther9 years ago

Showing a restricted any% by default while still following the naming convention I suggested, is used by a lot of communities. It should definitely work here as well.

This trick is huge, it will definitely change the game. Congrats on finding it!

As for the use in speedruns, it would make sense to distinguish runs that duplicate from runs that do not. For 100%, it should be banned for obvious reasons.

I am generally not a friend of naming categories after the glitches they use. Instead, I prefer the classic "any% no X". In my opinion, the name "any%" should always be used for the fastest way to beat the game. I've had this discussion many times at TASVideos already. My suggestion:

Any% Any% no Item Duplication <-- the current WR route Any% no WW <-- I guess the new glitch would be pointless without Wrong Warp

I'm AndyPANTHER, but thanks anyway ^^

100% is defined as:

 • All Spell Stones and Krazoa Spirits
 • All Staff Upgrades (including SharpClaw Disguise)
 • All health and magic upgrades
 • Biggest Scarab Bag
 • Firefly Lantern, Bafomdad Bag, Zoom Goggles, Tricky's Ball
 • All maps
 • All 75 Fuel Cells on the overworld
 • Collect and deliver every Token

One more thing I forgot last time was permanent C-stick items like the CloudRunner Flute. Those have the problem that even though they stay in your inventory, they don't stay usable. Stuff like the goggles and even the ball will always have an effect. I don't really mind if you include them, but I can already see how people would immediately want to get them off the list, as soon as there is a way to skip them.

I know this is an old topic and I don't even run this, but the category still isn't implemented yet, so I can't hurt to give my opinion on this.

If I was to decide, 100% would include everything minus maxing out the fuel cell counter and Bafomdads. I would also include delivering the tokens. Let me explain why:

Fuel cells It's obvious that maxing the fuel cell counter is dumb and pointless, I think everyone agrees here. But I would really want the run to include the "overworld fuel cells" or whatever you want to call them. For me, skipping them would feel incomplete. There's actually a game that has an item with almost the exact same situation, Quest 64 http://www.speedrun.com/quest64 and its "spirits". The only difference is that the overworld spirits in Quest 64 are not permanently missable (unless you enter the very final dungeon and save). I could perfectly see SA solving the problem the exact same way.

Bafomdads Bafomdads are limited and missable before the "point of no return", just like fuel cells. You'd think it makes sense to get them, but there is a big problem: The bag for them only carries 10 and there are are more Bafomdads in the game than that! This means that in a speedrun, you'd either have to die just to collect more, or you'd come up with some silly rule that you can just walk through them and pretend you collected them. For that reason, I think this item shouldn't be required (although the bag should).

Tokens I know it doesn't really give you something in the savefile when delivering the tokens. It's more like "unlocking cheats", a reward that applies to the game itself rather than the file you got it from (compare it to unlocking TT in Diddy Kong Racing). But in SA, it clearly makes a playthrough seem more complete and even shows off a part of the game that many people might have missed entirely.

Lot's of text from someone who doesn't run the game, I know, I'm just really interested in Stafox speedruns ^^

ATR with just TIMETOLOSE isn't particularly interesting. However, a category that people actually did is "Maniac%". That category uses every negative code at once to make it almost impossible to get the trophies.

I'm not entirely sure what codes are used and what effects can be combined, here are some that are definitely used: TIMETOLOSE TOXICOFFENDER BOGUSBANANAS ZAPTHEZIPPERS

Maybe someone else here remembers the exact requirements.
Each timing field can select times broken down into minutes, seconds, decaseconds, centiseconds, or milliseconds
Will you add a setting to select between showing decaseconds, centiseconds, or milliseconds? Having a time like 5.12 show up as 5.120 sucks for games that don't use milliseconds.

Turns out, there actually is a recording of my (emu) PB of Bonus Circuit, max points. Twitch didn't delete it, they just changed the link:

This means the link I gave you for Star Wars Racer any% is also broken:

Please replace both links in the submissions!

Also, the submission page is broken for me, as part of the horizontal content disappears on the right. I had to edit the CSS to read the comments.

Just let people run whatever they want. As long as it is an official version, there's literally no reason for wanting to "ban" anything. Just split categories if the difference is significant enough.

I really don't see a problem.

I don't think this jump was ever considered a skip, I have seen things like this in other racing games as well. It wouldn't make much sense to call it a skip.

For me, a new skip would be something like skipping an entire Oovo tube (a runner can dream, you know) or a lap skip like in Abyss.

Switzerlandandypanther9 years ago

Discuss everything about skips here.

Let me explain how I implemented the skips for this leaderboard. Currently, we have 4 tracks with skips

 • Bumpy's Breakers bridge jump
 • Abyss walljumps and lap skip
 • Gauntlet wallride jump
 • Inferno wallride jumps

Originally, the time trial community also included the wallride in Sebulba's Legacy as a skip, but I decided against that definition here. I don't really consider it an "unintended skip" in the same way as something like Abyss, where you skip most of the level. In Sebulba's Legacy, you stay inbounds all the time and the time saved is really small. Compare it to the Mario Kart 64 community that does not consider the hairpin jump of Yoshi Valley to be a skip.

There's another trick that I found myself (or at least haven't seen on video before) in Fire Mountain Rally: Towards the end of a lap, there's that big turn that can be skipped with a small shortcut that opens in lap 2. In lap 1, a rock will block it. Now if you drive against that corner at a specific angle, it is possible to go over the rock. It's very precise and only saves a tiny bit of time if performed perfectly. You're not going out of bounds or anything fancy, but it's definitely not intended.

So please let me know what you think about the current definition of skips. Are you ok with it or should there be changes?

Would it be possible to display systems/regions the same way as subcategories? Let me explain why this would be useful:

You see, people on this site don't seem to like the system variable. It looks just like any other variable, but whenever there is actual competition on more than one system, people find it unacceptable to have to use the same categories for them. Instead, you see stuff like "any% console" and "any% PC". Same goes for regions.

Now recently I was part of the restructuring of a gamepage http://www.speedrun.com/swe1r. There was a demand to separate the systems more, because as I said, the system variable is not popular. I didn't want to split the categories themselves because that would have meant to go from 4 to 12 categories. So the best option we came up with, was to remove the system variable altogether and create a system subcategory. This may be hacky, but it's the best we can do.

So again, an option to make system and/or region look like subcategories would be great!

Th leaderboard is updated! It now uses the system value as a subcategory, which may be a bit hacky, but at least we don't have to deal with 12 main categories. The region variable will stay, as it does make a difference on console. For PC runners, I recommend to arbitrarily choose a region to make it look better.

Video is required for all new runs now, but I may make an exception when I'm going to add some historical times and can't find a video.

Switzerlandandypanther9 years ago

I definitely want to have an upgrades variable. The reason I added it is that upgrades make every category a lot more RNG dependent, so I wanted to give people the option to not use them.

Switzerlandandypanther9 years ago

I'm not really a fan of using anything else but the standard system variable. It looks like any other variable, but for some reason people do not accept it and instead want a category for each system. But even I have done that in another game I moderate, it just makes things easier.

What bothers me here is that splitting systems into categories would make the leaderboard look terrible. You could just go with "console" and "PC", but I'm pretty sure Dreamcast is faster than N64, so there would probably be a demand to split that as well as soon as a Dreamcast run is submitted. Maybe it would be a good idea to implement it as subcategories?

Regarding video proof: I'm actually surprised that both replies are in favor of requiring video. I would be totally fine with introducing the rule for all new runs submitted here, if we can agree on that.
