Splits are generated with a timer program. The two most common are Livesplit and WSplit. Those programs run on your computer and allow you to make splits to track your progress. You can make as many or as few splits as you like for your game.

After that, you can use a capture card to capture the gameplay from the NES. You can buy a splitter if you want to split the signal to the cap card and to your TV (otherwise you'll be playing off a computer monitor). Then you just have to add both the capture feed and the split program to broadcasting software like OBS or XSplit. The broadcasting software can either allow you to stream to various services like twitch or to local record to a video file saved on your computer.

After that you simply start your splits when you start your game and split at the appropriate times. If I remember correctly WSplit and Livesplit default either the "Enter" key or the space bar to be the split key, but you can change those in the settings at any time. I suggest messing around a lot to find a split setup and layout that you like.

Hope that helps.

I'm still not sure what you mean by safe.

An emulator alone, as long as it's a trusted one (see the thread I linked a few posts ago) and not a random package of code distributed by an unknown website, will not harm your computer while you use it. If your computer isn't that good, you'll see performance issues but that's just caused by old/weak hardware. It's not ruining your computer or anything.

The only way you'll get something harmful that will harm your computer is if you click on random links while downloading anything. Then you run the risk of getting malware, viruses, etc. As with downloading anything online, be careful of what you click.

For what it's worth, yes, ZSNES and PJ64 are trusted emulators (allowed for runs is a different story like already mentioned). But as always, safe internet browsing habits go a long way with downloading anything from the web.

If you're asking for links to download emulators or something, you won't find those here as these forums aren't the place for distributing those kind of things.

PJ64 1.6 and 1.7 are usually legal for speedruns (ask game mods just in case), but PJ64 2.x tends to run faster than real hardware so those are usually banned.

For SNES, ZSNES and models of SNES9x 1.43 and below are usually banned for inaccuracies so a model of SNES9x above 1.43 is your best bet for those games.

ROM hacks can be run on emulator, and usually are, however for older consoles they can be run on real hardware using a flashcart like an Everdrive.

When in doubt, ask the mods what emulation rules they have in regards to banned emus/emu versions.

If you're running a trusted emulator than the emulator alone shouldn't cause any harm to your system. If you're running a random emulator that has very little info or support, then that's a bit more worrisome and those should be avoided. This thread https://www.speedrun.com/Speedrunning/thread/19h43 has a list of emulators that are commonly used and are considered valid for runs. For many newer systems (PS2, Wii, etc) the emulators may not be valid for runs but there are trusted emulators for them like Dolphin.

If your computer isn't the greatest you might notice some performance issues like slowdowns when running the emulator but that's not causing any harm or anything, it just means your computer isn't strong enough to run the emulator alongside any other programs/windows you have open.

One thing could be the input method - the GBA might allow for better inputs than a keyboard or USB controller on the emulator.

Another thing is that VBA can be inaccurate compared to an actual GBA so it could be that the emulator is running a bit faster than the console which could lead to less input frames to perform some of the tricks.

You'd have to ask the mods of the game to get a definitive answer, but in general it seems that a lot of communities don't like burning games to discs to play. Too many factors to consider as a lot of different things can affect the performance of the burned copy.

You're better off playing on emulator (if it's allowed) if you don't have a disc.

The problem sounds like you're capturing your desktop audio into OBS when you capture the window. This means that if you open up your own stream with the volume unmuted, you'll get in infinite loop of your sound being repeated into OBS which get some outputted on your stream which gets captured by OBS and so on.

I don't know if OBS has a way built in to isolate and mix individual audio channels. It sounds like you're going to need a virtual audio mixer so that you can limit certain channels to OBS and limit others to your headset which will allow you to control it like you want. I know jack squat about audio but I know there are some free virtual mixers out there that might do what you want but it might require some googling and testing on your part.

Hopefully an audio guru might be able to help you with some more specific info (or maybe OBS can do this itself and I just don't know how, my stream setup is always super basic so I never really explore this stuff).

To the secondary question - yes, red sword is super mod. Green sword is regular mod, gold sword is full mod.

gv-usb2.

It's about $40 and supports both composite and s-video. Has arguably the best quality for its price for retro games. You can add in a splitter for another $20 or so if you want to play off your tv as well.

IL means "Individual Level" which essentially means just completing a part of the game like a single temple. Usually you'll start the timer at the start of the level/temple and stop it at the completion point.

RTA is a timing method for runs and stands for "Real Time Attack" which essentially means don't stop or pause the timer until the run is over or you reset the run.

ILs or full game runs are usually always timed as RTAs. So what you're asking for is basically an IL - complete the Fire Temple as fast as possible. Unless you're asking for an arbitrary run like "start from a fresh file and go up until Fire Temple". Creating Misc. categories like that will be up to the mods.

That has been an ongoing discussion here https://www.speedrun.com/The_Site/thread/g79jt/47 and you're not the only person to want that option so hopefully it'll come soon.

I think the OP is talking about using an LB for a high score board instead of time tracking board. In other words, entering 500ms is 500 points in the game the board is for (see Flappy Bird as an example). I don't think the goal here is creating a weighting system or anything like that, just to sort the board inversely so "slower" times are first because thy represent the highest score.

Unless I'm mistaken, there is a setting to check that allows for a board to be sorted inversely to achieve the desired result. I just don't know off the top of my head the name of the setting but I know it's used for high score boards and for some boards that use in game time (because some times having more IGT left can mean you did it faster if you have a time limit).

For the same reason a mod can delete a post - it's part of moderation. Maybe the person misspoke about a rule, the mod can add an edited note to clarify it instead of creating a new post to correct the person. Or a mod can remove a link from a post if the link is to something they don't want in the forum without needing to delete the whole post.

Being a moderator means that you have some degree of trust to behave yourself. If someone did what you're suggesting and abused their power in such a way they would be promptly removed by a full mod or admin.

Oh, I thought they could do it in one click. Kinda obnoxious to have to do it post by post.

The primary jobs of a moderator include verifying runs, answering questions, setting up rules for the game/categories, adding new categories, and generally interfacing with the game's community as needed.

Verifying a run usually includes checking it for anything that might make it invalid. For runs that aren't a top time, that can just include checking the start and end points for correct timing and checking a few points in the middle for nothing out of the ordinary. For top times, you'll probably want to review the run fully and closer to make sure everything looks good. For some runs you can even frame count it to make sure the time is accurate if you think it's necessary.

You'd be best off asking the mods of the game(s) you want to run. They can give you a definitive answer.

But at least for some of the games I'm familiar with, they might allow them submitted as emu because it's essentially emulation and has a tendency to run slower than the real game as well as suffer from lots of input delay.

If possible, avoid those types of consoles and run on an emu on your computer if it can handle it and real hardware isn't an option, you'll have better times that way.

Nah, you're probably fine, if someone had an issue with you creating too many threads then they would let you know.

Nobody will probably get angry unless you started creating a lot of threads every day that don't really have a lot of purpose.

For standard definition capture, I'd go gv-usb2 over everything else. It's only around 40 USD and provides easily the best quality for that price as well as some of the best SD quality. It'll capture regular composite as well as s-video. The driver install is in Japanese, but it's only 1 click so it's not that hard to figure out + guides online can help.

As for HD, you have much more in terms of comparable options, but what HowDenKing said is the best advice - go internal for the best HD quality.

You can't delete a whole thread, only an admin/full mod can do that. Game mods MIGHT be able to do it for the forums of the game they moderate, but I'm not 100% sure on that. All you can do is delete your own posts by using the 3 dots in the right hand corner of your post and clicking on "delete post".

I wouldn't recommend deleting posts or trying to get threads deleted, if a mod/admin thinks a thread deserves to be deleted, they will get rid of it, but there's nothing wrong with keeping old threads/posts once a thread has been resolved or died down.
