Using emulator to practice can help a LOT with muscle memory of movement, but can potentially hurt visual muscle memory, due to emulator latency. I've been digging into solving input/display lag with emulators; hopefully I'll learn something good soon.

Low-priority request: Allowing for columns to be hidden by default in leaderboard settings, to look less cluttered in some situations. An example could be Metroid Prime which uses in-game time as their main measure, but don't require real time to be recorded. A game that has only one platform and region could hide the platform column. The only required columns would are rank, player, primary time, and date.

This could be used for games that have separate timing methods for categories or full-game/levels.

Repeating what I mentioned to CCNeverender on Twitter.

The in-game timer seems to be exactly like what real time w/o loads would be, minus the menuing, rounded to the nearest second for each mission. I strongly suggest using it as the primary time for both full-game and level leaderboards.

The other two timing methods aren't required until there's a tie, in which case real time w/o loads can be used, again for both leaderboards. Unfortunately, because of how the site is designed, we can't have all three (real time, game time, and no loads) without looking cluttered.
I think the last time this was discussed, the conclusion was it's not different enough from any% but I could totally be wrong on that because it's been quite a while.
Metroid II: Return of Samus has a similar issue. Any% is nearly identical to 100% with the Ice Beam being the only difference, at about 4 minutes more to the run. It's a damn shame when a game's "Any%" and "100%" are only marginally different.

Using the API is a temporary solution until something better is thought of.

You could try making 'ghost profiles' that gives guests with the same name a profile that has no login access. When someone comes to claim it, the runs get re-assigned to the real profile and the ghost is purged.

Found some runs that are bugged. They have an IL category applied to them, but no level. Kinda weird. Found them while organizing my crawl from about 2 weeks ago.
Is there any way I could generate that type of info for myself if I needed to do this again in the future?
I used the API to grab the runs: /api/v1/runs?status=verified&orderby=verify-date&direction=desc&game=yd40gg1e&max=200&offset=0

For now you'd have to parse the information manually like I did. I can't think of a quick way of making a parser through Notepad++ or Excel; I'd have to make something in C# or related. If you want to know how I parsed it, though, just ask.

@Skull64 I'll whip something up to help you using the API. Shouldn't take longer than 30 minutes. I'll edit this when it's done.

Edit: Here you go: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tY7zsZI2gZE9T1MvPT1bIbb6eg7P-BTINd6mUVT17CM/edit?usp=sharing

It lists all the runs for Metroid Prime. You can sort by hovering over the letters above the column names. Hyperlinks should work, too. API limitations make the levels, categories, users, and regions in their IDs only, but I'm sure you'll figure out which is what.

The admins have lives, give them a little time. It'll be handled within a couple hours; it's not like much can change in that time.

This list makes me think: Should there be a list of selectable emulators when submitting a run? What I mean is, when you check the emulator box, a dropbox menu appears below Platform to select your emulator (and possibly version).

What timing methods should be used?

• Real time starts at clicking the campaign difficulty and ends upon seeing the 'Mission Complete' screen on the final mission. I think that's fine, though it does end up including load times. • Game time is the sum of times displayed at the end of each mission. It uses whole minutes so close records can become disputed. That, and like the rest of the series, save & load, or even restarting, can skew mission times. S&L can be banned for individual levels, but how do we treat it for full-game runs? • Real time (no loads) could be used to compromise between the two, though three time columns aren't much fun to deal with. S&L/Restarts are accounted for and load times are stripped.

Right now I have it set to sort by game time. Any thoughts?

It even has the number of followers, that's awesome.

Nevermind, I forgot about the time adjustment. -- I was curious about the formula so I checked it manually. It rounds down the number of days since run/submission/approval for each run, and the final activity value is rounded to the nearest hundredth. It also seems to update a game when there's a change in runs, or at least a new approved run.

Had some fun with numbers. I only crawled the games I follow as examples. I may crawl more if it doesn't torque the server. Most anticipated gamesBlinx 2: Masters of Time and Space (7 followers and no runs) • Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (13 followers and no recent activity) • Yoshi's Story (22 followers and very low activity [under 0.10]) Most watched runs -- Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (2 runs with 1274 average views) Least watched runs -- Command & Conquer: Red Alert - Counterstrike (3 runs with 7 views, mostly because they're ILs)

Edit: I've noticed something for the more active games. This formula: ln((x-1)/x)¤30.4375/2/ln(2), x being the activity value, results in how long it takes for it go down by 1. This could somehow be used to think of a name.

While entering IL times in for one of the games I moderate, I noticed the activity (and by extension, run count) can be manipulated to inflate a game's activity more than it should, only limited to how active the moderators are. Games that only keep track of full-game runs would be stomped by similar games that also keep track of best segs/ILs. If I added all of 8-Bit Armies's ILs same day as the first run, its activity would've been at about 27.74, and would probably put it in the Top 100. It comes down to how 'detailed' a leaderboard is. I mean really, it just shows more determination in keeping track of records, which isn't a bad thing. So in a sense it does show activity.

Something tweaked while adding IL times for a game or I wasn't paying enough attention. Could you purge all the runs for this? I can't find and delete the obsolete runs for it:

I fixed it myself with help from the API

Edit: @Ewil is correct; that's what happened. I don't think it was like that before.

The admins seem to discourage having empty leaderboards. I agree with it in some aspect but disagree as well. There shouldn't be pointless boards, but seeing one at all, even if empty, could encourage people to be the first. I don't think they'll get upset directly if you add the GBC games; they haven't with the Command & Conquer series.

Either "Multple Gex Games" or "Gex Trifecta" would work best. Here are the multi-game leaderboards that I know of:

Yeah, in-game time is really accurate. The most a full-game run would be off by is ±12.5 seconds. It also removes load times, which is nice.

United StatesROMaster29 years ago

I'm sure it'd be fine. If emulators have any notable advantage we can address that later, but go ahead for now!

Obnoxious bug. If you're logged in on the SSL site (https://www.speedrun.com/) and follow a link without SSL (http://www.speedrun.com/) you get logged out on both. I'm sure it's the same vice versa.

Minor bug. Hovering over the mods in a game/series doesn't show the time according to setting/timezone. It shows it in site time. ie I'm in PST using yyyy-mm-dd so it should be showing "2016-05-01 11:53 AM", not "1 May 2016, 18:53".

Given the number of possibilities this game has, it's swamped by the number of sub-categories it can have:

 1. Faction (for now there's only Renegades, but there's plans for up to 6 factions total)
 2. Single-Player or Co-Op (each faction presumably has both)
 3. New Game or New Game+ (If you start with a blank file or with all the unlocks)
 4. Bronze, Silver, or Gold (Depends on the number of stars you get on each mission; one, two, or all three)
 5. Beginner, Normal, and Hard (Can be a non-subcategory variable. I know 100% can't be done on Beginner)

Going HAM on all them would total to 216 possibilities NotLikeThis . It can be thought about more when there's more runs/runners.
