I once tried to make a blog software from scratch. Sounded easy, just a title, the text, maybe the date, repeat until all posts are there, right? Well I did work on it for a week and never actually finished it and what I have now is basically just parsing a json file and already bloated up to multiple days of tinkering. A message system needs much more work, and maybe even encryption, unless you want site admins to be able to read your messages to other users. Then there'd also have to be some form of spam filtering, which judging by how often I see bots on this forum, is not a thing that's present yet.

Okay I had it now and removed it, time to go get 75 more average viewers per stream so I can put it back ;)

Runs (or rather run submissions on this site) can be edited, which requires re-verfification. If it isn't verified yet, no loss at all, just find it in the pending actions and edit it?

can I get "partner" too? :'3

Edit: joking aside, I am an affiliate, have been for almost a year and did stream today, no badge here. So there may or may not be something slow/bugged here. Edit 2: had the badge now, removed it in profile settings until it either says Affiliate or I'm partner :'3

I seem to not have that badge at all, but I saw a few more in other threads

I don't get how that's stupid, that's how relative and absolute urls are differentiated literally anywhere?

I'll be switching to Phantombot's browser sources when those are finalized (and I get my chance to mess with the code in whatever way I want), so I have no real use for potentially worse software that heavily implies I should be staying with streamlabs, which is way harder to customize. Changing the title/game and such I could probably even make custom commands for, if I really wanted to, but I already have both the bot's and twitch's dashboard open anyways, just one Ctrl+Tab away from the tab I keep my notes in.

I stream at 800kbits due to my internet getting less reliable all the time (I'm really hoping for an upgrade soon...), so I started local recording quite a while ago. For quality options CQP 18 seems to be the way to go, as it adjusts bitrate variably depending on content. A Fullscreen GBA game would be only 400kbits and still look 99% lossless, while something a bit more complex will take the bitrate it needs to look near-lossless as well. I used to just do 4000kbits, but now my local recordings are usually a lot smaller, but look way better and even after re-rendering in Sony Vegas (with higher cpu preset and either 2000 or 4000kbits depending on what the source file has on average) the difference between twitch stream and youtube re-upload is definitely worth the extra trouble for me.

not sure if we're talking about the (probably abandoned) Fornite Singleplayer game or Fornite Battle Royale here. I'd assume if the singleplayer game was finished (I never heard news about that and don't care about the franchise) that'd be speedrun-able, but Battle Royale likely isn't a good idea.

boring copypaste, but I literally answered this question before, so I'll leave a link: https://www.speedrun.com/post/pff3m

the world record plugin looks up the game name and category entered for the splits file. Some things like values don't work properly for this, so I usually just put a text line and type things in manually in that case (I already have seperate layouts for most games anyways, which I just update before the stream)

I know GEAR:Full Circle still has some sort of wrongwarp (possibly only from loading the level) that I never managed to recreate. There is one level where it may be faster to start further up, out of bounds, and potentially skip puzzles, although I'm not sure any checkpoints would trigger and if there's any way to re-enter the level either.

From my personal experience switching between emulators and Gameboy Player a lot, Bizhawk (with either VBA-Next or mGBA core, never noticed a difference for RTA here, but I had a TAS desync on VBA-next, while mGBA does not seem to accept randomized roms (even after adding the checksum to the gamedb textfiles)) seems to be the more accurate one, although for some weird reason the Pokemon community still requires VBA (or VBA-rr iirc) even tho anyone who ever did R/S/E on that emulator knows that the input lag is way too much for precise mach bike movement, which is already hard enough as is.

TL;DR: If there's nothing forced in the game's rules, Bizhawk is the better choice imo, because VBA has stupid input lag.

quite a few saveglitches work on steampipe, the ones that definitely don't work are the ones where you're saving on/in the top edge of a portal iirc.

[quote]Also, a lot of people can’t get the gvusb2 to work with OBS[/quote] I am willing to bet 100% of those people either have not installed the drivers or have incorrect settings in OBS on the video capture device source.

There is also the possibility that different languages change stuff like the natures of trainer pokemon (iirc jpn has different natures than eng) and different text length means that you may or may not be able to hit earlier frames for RNG manip or the opposite, which could be an advantage or disadvantage over english.

I somehow only have 2 years, but I know for a fact, I've been doing speedrun-related things for longer, as I started out with Fire Emblem Awakening, more or less casually and never got a capture card for that until december '17. Now I have all the capture equipment I need (for all kinds of games in general), other than just one more male-to-male AV cable I misscounted and maybe HDMI capture and a better CRT for the future, but no idea what I want to run currently.

[quote]-Capture the entire emulator window, including the border.[/quote] Not possible in OBS Studio unless you use Monitor capture which is 1) extra work to set up every time the emulator changes position for some reason, in the case of bizhawk it changes size all the time depending on what console you emulate. 2) doesn't work properly on a lot of graphics cards. [quote]-If the emulator has a movie option you should show the "no movie" message.[/quote] On some emulators this causes the game to freeze, while the menu is open and therefore would invalidate that VoD by the standards of the next one: [quote]-Your run should begin from (and include) system reset or power cycle. [/quote] which also has bad wording, because forcing emulator to run with different timing gives them a disadvantage instead of providing extra fairness. Should be "Your submission video should begin [...]". [quote]-It is highly recommended that you stream all of your attempts [...][/quote] Not everyone can stream, for example my family is forced to use a trash tier ISP provided router that crashes if I stream or upload while any other device is already doing something, therefore I can't stream.

I'm also not a huge fan of cluttering up the gameplay with input displays and framecounters (which probably add a tiny bit of extra lag too) for games with a small resolution, but that's subjective. There are better ways of doing that, like Nohboard, which you can put next to the gameplay, for example under livesplit. Ideally the footage is recorded at a framerate and quality where frame-by-frame comparisons are easy to make. As mentioned above banning Turbo/Autofire is also subjective, some communities have opted to make the use of this allowed with the compromise of it being a seperate category.

In addition using a whitelist of emulators can be a bad idea, because emulators still get developed, therefore could become more or less accurate over time. For example Gameboy and Gameboy Color switch from Gambatte to BGB and back to a fork of Gambatte called Gambatte-Speedrun over the past 2 or 3 years. Everytime something like that happens, the whitelist would need to be updated by site staff, who are already busy enough as is.

EDIT: Oh yeah, while we're already mentioning Bizhawk, which really is mostly just a collection for multiple emulators, like mGBA for GBA (it also offers VBA-Next, so that's an extra thing to show before every run), these collections would be banned due to whitelists, unless they are the only ones offering a core made for that specific program.

am I really seeing talk about "the" design and customization in here, while there's literally built-in tools for custom themes? The "new thread" box also uses the same UI design as the rules and the dropdown menus, so that actually is part of the design theme, which by the way, while not similar to the current trends, also has to be optimized for being able to show these very Forums and stuff like tables (leaderboards, profiles of every user, the frontpage) much more than any generic social media site.

And, while markdown isn't fully implemented yet, BBCode works just fine and does pretty much the same, examples can be seen in various sticky thread or if you want a specfic one, the rules of Portal make great use of the feature. The only thing missing here would be getting some sort of WYSIWYG editor, which there are probably various libraries out there, but currently everything's in a transitional period between BBCode and markdown, so that editor may be on the list, once BBCode is fully replaced.

I don't see how you came up with such a potentially, if not definitely, offensive sounding title, because this website has been very useable for years and the forums work fine for communication within communities, who probably are going to switch to Discord at some point either way, a lot of them have, for good reasons that are not the fault of this website. I'm just going to ignore the part of this thread where we bring up how syncing with external sites is work that isn't finished yet, because forcefully pressuring people into working on stuff will either bring no results or a super broken feature, that is better off deleted again anyways and I don't think anyone here wants that.

cl_showpos shows the velocity, although the numbers are quite small on a 1080p display. I think there was a mod for HL2 that displayed the speed nicer, but I have never actually asked around for that, so I'm not sure if it's available for Portal. Personally I put a bind (bind o "incrementvar cl_showpos 0 1 1") on O to toggle cl_showpos for the purpose of OoB runs. cl_showpos is in the whitelist in the rules, so will be fine to use during runs as well.

As for the GLaDOS strat, I'd be very interested in a consistent way to get that as well, as I'm still doing ancient strats myself, but haven't found anything either, when I tried it.
