Hey guys! First time runner that started today.
On that run, I encountered a Patra that behaved... a bit strangely, to say the least. At least, from my perspective. I don't remember Patras going out of bounds like that, so I wondered if that was something that happened to any of you.
Footage:
Looks like a frame-perfect pause prior to the game being able to properly set the state of the giant mouser's hitbox to hidden.
I'm not extremely knowledgeable with this game (I'm merely a spectator when it comes to this game), but I gotta wonder: can pauses "buffer" during the door entry sequence? If so, then you could probably buffer your pause to get the frame-perfect pause every time.
I'd be down for a separate category, as I did a run of it. Would be a shame to see that run, and Link's, go to waste. :)
On that topic, I've seen the discussion over at tasvideos about what a Pinbot speedrun "should" be, and it got me thinking as to whether or not a "1 loop" category would be advisable. It would basically be going through one loop of the three "stages" as fast as possible. I believe it could be an interesting type of run. What are your thoughts on this?
Just looked at the new WR, and it seems like Link built up his solar value from previous games to about 2.1M in order to get a huge near-5M bonus when switching stages during multiball (which has a 2x multiplier applied to everything durung that period of time).
Now, my question is: do we really want to allow solar value buildup from previous games? I mean, the time spent to build solar value isn't taken into account in the run, so technically, it would be possible to just build up solar value to about 4.8 mil prior to the run, and then just aim to switch stages during multiball.
Just wanted to point out that this isn't criticism pointed towards the new WR. It's quite the creative strat, and I like that. However, I could see future runners questioning the usage/abuse of previous games to get to the target score. The same way, for instance, that jRPG runs should start on a clean SRAM when possible.
Personally, I'd be fine either way, to be quite honest; I simply thought this was a question that HAD to be looked into.
Got two questions here:
1- Would runs made on the fan-translated version be accepted? I know there's more text scrolling, but quite frankly, that would be my own prerogative if this hinders my run. Unless there's another reason for not accepting that version?
2- Is the Hitoshikonomi trick allowed? Basically, if you SOLELY have those items in your hero's inventory, all unequipped...
Cypress stick Sharpened bone Hat of happiness Oaken club Saw blade Cloak of evasion
...then all your hits will be crits, and monster recruiting will work 100% of the time. This seems to either be an easter egg of the game, or some leftover debugging trick they had.
If you could let me know about those two topics, it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
The amarec solution will most likely help for your dazzle as well.
"It's definitely a radical idea"
And I don't think he means that in a "80's video game commercial" kind of way. :P
Well the filters DO show on my end when I tilt my mobile horizontally. More likely than not, it's a matter of insufficient screen space for it to show vertically.
Not exactly convenient, I'll admit.
@JSR2gamers "This is the kind of thing that will cause runners to delete their runs from your leaderboard"
Couldn't have said it any better! Consider this as my protest. clicks '...', clicks "Delete run"
Had to do it for all my previous runs, but done.
@ViruseReturns: I get that. However, anyone in a moderator position is expected to be above that. Giving into the mud-slinging game is unbecoming of someone in that position. It doesn't paint the moderating team nor the duties said team has towards the community in a good light.
There's something I've learned in business: perception is reality. The more I grow, the more I see it's also applicable in all aspects of life. People would rather rely on their first impressions than dig deeper to find out what's behind. And as a moderator, I believe you have to keep that in mind at all times, especially when your main role is to represent the community and execute decisions said community wants you to.
Well, the "zelda community" argument is entirely irrelevant, and has solely been used for insults and scapegoating by those who blindly support the decision and its premises. The issue has absolutely nothing to do with zelda and everything to do with an arbitrary decision that was taken without any kind of prior consultation. But I think we've established that already, haven't we?
See, when you make, and more importantly EXECUTE, a decision of this magnitude without consultation, you have to expect backlash from the community. There's no other way around it; you HAVE to expect it. And it's not something minor like an unpopular category being added; a distinct-enough category was removed, thus taking legitimate achievements away from players, merely because one person who happens to have a sword icon next to his name didn't like that.
And backlash there was (duh!). Anyone acting surprised at that has no business moderating a leaderboard on this site.
Oh, and before anyone comes out and says that I'm a "butthurt zelda runner", a mere look at my profile should suffice to prove the contrary. If anyone's THAT hellbent on labeling me "butthurt", at least call me a "butthurt tetris runner". Be that as it may, the change, along with its implementation, is BS, and so is trying to divert attention from that issue to the red herring that is the "zelda gang". That's just intellectually dishonest, and that's what I'm calling out.
Perpetuating the drama will not resolve the issue.
How about we get a respectable response from a mod on the entire situation and more specifically, its current status? Surely you will not stay idle in front of this SNAFU, will you?
Yep. Bring it back.
Although I'll be honest here: I don't believe they will. And my guess on what the reason will be: too much work to put that LB back up, even though THEY decided to get rid of it without consulting anyone in the first place.
Avoiding drama like this is the main reason you consult with your community when intending to do changes of such magnitude.
When you don't, you have no right to complain about the community backlash, let alone bring out of context insults ("LUL U CANT COUNT DATS Y UR Z1 TIMES SUK LULULUL"). The whole thing definitely wasn't handled properly at all, from the implementation of said changes to the handling of the predictable backlash.
I know I'll get a lot of flak for those last lines, but it wouldn't be the first time.
As for a name suggestion that would be more PG?
The only one that would come to mind would be something like "HeelTurn%". "Turning heel", in pro-wrestling lingo, means becoming a bad guy, usually by betraying the good guys in a very, very despicable manner. Which is what's being done ultimately in this run.
But then again, I believe we should let the suggestions roll for a while.
@shikaroxen: The reason why it bears such a name is because it has always been known as such within the Dragon Quest speedrunning community. This is the first time I've heard of anyone taking offense to the name, to be fair.
Now you mentioned professionalism. The number of speedrunners who do that as their profession is quite small. Plus, I've seen much, much worse in terms of issues that would make speedrunning look "unprofessional", namely how certain speedrunners/"professional gamers" carry themselves in general. But that's an entirely different debate, for sure.
I really don't see why this would provoke such an outrage, to be quite honest. That's what a meme run is about, after all: inside jokes within the game/series' community. And those can be raunchy at times.
Please note that this is merely my opinion on the matter, and that I'm more puzzled than anything else when it comes to the reaction this drew. I fully trust pjplustwo's judgement on that, and am on board with whatever he decides. Just thought I'd put my two cents out, for what they're worth.
Very well, here's the run I recorded from the toaster. If it says that it's still processing, simply check a bit later on. :P
There's room for improvement for sure. Did quite a few oopsies when I lost track of a few things, namely keys when going to save the princess. That allowed me to find out, after my run was done, that the Green Dragon kill DOES get saved if you haven't saved the princess yet. That should make the Flame Sword (which I grinded extra for) useless, as I thought I'd have to fight the dragon after every Charlock dive fail. It did make the Axe Knight fight easier, but I think going for the Silver Shield before the Axe Knight helped more with survivability than the extra damage of the Flame Sword vs the Broad Sword.
But man was I ever uber-lucky with my Charlock dive. Only ONE AK47 and NO Fun Police! :D Now why do I never get that kind of dive on my normal level 18 runs?...
So next runs should have less grinding for sure.
As for rules, here's how I would put them up as:
- GOAL: Take the princess to the Dragonlord and accept his offer, rather than fight him.
- Timer starts when done choosing response speed on character creation.
- Timer ends when the menu becomes blood red, after accepting the Dragonlord's offer.
- RNG manipulation is not allowed.
