Just because this website is not designed for high scores, it doesn't mean it's totally impossible. Maybe they have the potential to make high scores stuff to be available for this website. This is about time but I know it may happen someday
high score runs are the exact opposite of speedruns. they're the last thing that should be on src, even if there is retro crossover appeal.
Yeah I'm not sure why you'd try to defend changes that negatively impact what is just a conglomerate of leaderboards and vastly different communities. SRC isn't exactly providing a service for us, it's the other way around, really. If the more dedicated communities get tired of dealing with negative changes they'll likely leave. elo.io was never going to buy SRC without a return on their investment, so slapping ads on it was inevitable, and I'm sure various forms of subscriptions and/or paywalls are in the pipe as well.
@Brakshow I get that PVP games seemingly work against the concept of speedrunning, but the examples listed could easily be any other single player game where the community decides to have a million categories. If the members of that community want a bloated leaderboard like that, then that's what they want. As far as resources go, thousands of games are coming out every week, non pvp even. Many of which meet the """criteria""" to be listed on SRC. Disallowing certain genres or styles of games because people perceive them as not being legitimate just reminds me of SDA and TG.
At this point im fully expecting it to happen.
"Speedrun.com Gold Membership Member those previously free features we had before? Like WR Progression graphs or fancy profile backgrounds? Well now you get to pay for them for only $9.99 a month!"
I've already seen posts from a few users stating they'd rather have such a thing. Seems like a shit ad rollout might be part of the plan lol.
People defending the further worsening of the site need to understand that it is not ran by the "community" anymore. elo.io didn't buy SRC because they themselves are speedrunners and they just really want to improve the site/community. The plan was always to monetize it.
you can browse it fine without ad block, it can just get annoying, and if you dont like it, like i said then leave
ads are resource theft, simple as. don't defend them. I can only imagine for mobile users. I wouldn't be shocked if ads are used to slide in a pay wall at some point, because "it's ads or paywall lol". Really any justification for trying to monetize a collection of speedrunning leaderboards is a joke to me, but eh what do I know. It's back to wikis on a long enough time line I suppose.
still as an adblock user myself I'm more concerned with moderator video showcasing. It sounds like a weird feature that distracts from leaderboards but I guess it depends on how its implemented.
can i get UH news feed removal?
Spending weeks trying to PB. Getting the average finished run closer and closer to current PB. Watching golds popping up left and right. Being -10 seconds into the final stage in said runs, only to be +0.5 at the end. Doing this over and over again until finally the PB happen. Finally, after all these weeks of hard work. After all these massive time saves over my old PB. I finally beat my old PB, by 0.3 seconds.
If a community decides that they would rather use google sheets for their leaderboard then that is the "official" leaderboard of that game. SRC doesn't have a monopoly on anything. Speedrunning existed before SRC, and got by just fine. There's communities for popular games that still prefer to operate outside of SRC.
There's no such thing as an unofficial leaderboard ;)
I've had people submit runs that weren't theirs before. I rejected the run and reported the person that submitted it, end of story. Outside of WR or top times I don't see the point though.
