  • Modded consoles with hard drive loading is allows

Dolphin Emulator is now allowed!

"ed58 08/16/2020 @ everyone As of 8/16/2020 we officially made some rule changes to the leaderboards. PlayStation versions of the game are now required to start the timer at 19 minutes 17 seconds. (any runs done prior have been adjusted). We are also allowing a specific version of Dolphin for full game runs/IL's and have attached it to the resources page on SRC (the rom is not included). Hopefully these changes stick and will make a good impression on current and future runners c:

[8:32 PM] the rules on SRC should also reflect these changes"

chumpp - Origin of the 30 Second Mozer https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/metal_arms_segmented_pure_speed_run.html 2006-01-25

"me and a friend were beta testers at vivendi universal for that game we always talk about how much fun it is and how fun it was to test with all the glitches we found i would love to see a speed run on this game all the testers on it would abuse several glitches with it to make the playthroughs much easier "nuts of steel" was near impossible without these i personally would like to see some of your best times and would probably contribute some of my own

perhaps have a category for normal and nuts of steel but both being segmented normal would be faster, but nuts of steel is more about strategy and surviving with limited ammo and life my friend was constantly put on nuts of steel playthroughs and could do it in about 14 hours straight, but that is not as interesting to watch as there are some levels that are not as optimizable as others like when the dog is driving for you (and that is challenging enough on nuts of steel)

i would love to see this game as a category and i think you would be pleasantly surprised at some of the glitches we know that are still in the game

its a shame its not such a big title because Vivendi wasted all their marketing on "the hobbit" ...such a horrible game

i will check back and hopefully you will start trying it out. for starters...try to beat level 8 in 30 seconds i know i can "

"dudes your doing it the sucker way i know a glinch where you can complete the entire mission and get revenge on a certain few Mills(evil laugh ). Ill share this awsomeness with u, ok first do as normal up until where you get the wrench. The part where your supposed to go under once you lose your head run at that and just before impact use the wrench, if you did it right you should zoom up real close then reassemble and walk forward you should be on the other side. Repeat 2 more times till your at the end then jump on the crates and on to the conveour belt do the same. Go through doors like this and bust their helpless asses they can't do anything cuz their not programmed to in the game. "

re-answering question as original reply was deleted

There are 2 separate setups for this skip one for xbox / gamecube another for ps2/3. Whenever you watch a guide or example take note of the version being played. Some people use the ps2/3 strat on xbox/gc but you cannot use the gc/xbox strat on ps2/3.

Just to clarify The ps2 strat ends with the front of the tank in the air, the xbox counterpart ends with the rear of the tank in the air.

Re-answering this post as the original response was deleted with ed58s previous account.

::edit:: We now add the 19:11 saved from cutscenes to the Playstations RTA. This balances out the consoles and makes 360 Arcade the fastest for records. While Playstation remains the fastest in actual play time.

The current fastest version to play on is a PS2 disc with a backwards compatible PS3 console (list of compatible consoles in link below). This has faster load times than the fat ps2s and retains its ability to skip all pre rendered cutscenes. There is currently only 1 runner using this setup as of 10/8/18 everyone else plays on xbox 360

Second fastest option would be a fat PS2 ( the slim is currently untested ). Using an original PS2 disc. You lose time to in level loads compared to PS3 but the fat also skips all pre rendered CS's (-0:19:11). Making it faster than the 360 versions even with slower loads.

The third and most common way to run the game is an Xbox 360 with the NTSC X360 Arcade release of the game ($10USD Via Microsoft store). This allows you to run the game from the HDD and is by far the most popular and comfortable way to run the game. This sadly comes with having to watch all those pre-rendered cutscenes ( +0:19:11 min) and a relatively high cost for a 15 year old game. With the negatives you get 1080p up-scaling the fastest loads and best lighting of all versions. Important to note for ILs the og Xbox has less lag than 360.

Dont forget even though you lose time to cut-scenes and WR is RTA Based. We compare runs using the sum of all levels IGT This cuts out loads and cut-scenes so its easy to compare runs across consoles no matter which you pick!

Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, its a 3rd person shooter that runs like a platformer. There are only around 5 of us active but tons of time put in between us. Not sure about learning all the tricks in 24 hours but i cant say that is a bad thing, some are quite precise. There are tutorials and such on youtube but they mostly feature older strats as we are constantly discovering new routes. The IL boards in particular can use some odd strategies, keeping this in mind we all post our runs publicly for all to see. Aswell as an open discord where we post all our recent finds, and help anyone who needs it.

Skills - There is only one way to git gud, practice. No-one starts off a master you gotta level up IRL. / Recording equipment - If you have a PC made after 2005 your half way there. Pickup a GV-USB2 for 30USD's or so and OBS Studio for free and your set. / Time - There are plenty of fantastic runs done in under a half an hour. Aswell as individual level runs done in under a minute. One run a day is all it takes to git gud. / Confidence - This is sort of a positive feedback loop. Once you start pbing, your forced to believe in yourself. As you progress and get better that feeling is only reinforced. Few things that are difficult are immediately satisfying, but once you get through that initial discomfort it allows you to appreciate the achievement for what it is.

TLDR - Just do it

Also come run Metal Arms with us :3 https://www.speedrun.com/Metal_Arms_Glitch_in_the_System/individual_levels

Yeah that's all normal for the PS2 version. You can help negate the effects by looking away from large explosions and other particle effects. Really all you can do beside switch versions.

As far as how that lag effects the IGT (In game time) that we use for ILs (individual levels) needs further research.

Theirs also the particularly infuriating issue of eaten inputs, which is what you were experiencing when the spew wouldn't fire.

Lag spikes include the elevator in do or die and the first time you see the loader in cleanup. Lag reduction is important in these sections even on xbox 360.

update:

We have determined that the OG Xbox console has the least lag of all versions.

Just wanted to update this thread for future readers as Ed58 has found a solution to the final gap. Although at this point it is only viable for IL runs.
