Something new was found that means showing only the title won't work anymore. You MUST show the "seed" section for all runs, with the exception of runs prior 1.5.

After consideration of people's reasonings, opinions, and votes regarding tools in speedruns from late last year, here are the rulings.

(Vanilla/Glitchless) Allowable tools - simple images and spreadsheets are okay. Making edits mid-run to them are okay. Not allowed - moveable layer images, tools that pull seed info, or tools that automate searching for data.

NDE (no dialogue extension - pasteless rename) and Glitches Allowable tools - any tool that doesn't pull the game seed. Not allowed - a tool that pulls game seed or automates the searching for data.

Hopefully these will help future proof the rules for any tools not yet developed/considered 🙂

Seeded - any regular (not TAS) tool is allowed. No seed predictors in-game - planning can be done beforehand with them (including images). Regular category rules still apply (glitch, NDR, etc)

Happens to the best of us. Good ladder reactions/clicking for everything else though

Nice run :) You can save more time by shift-left clicking items into the bundles :)

"first on the board" but 6 days slower than possum and my run :P gj though. figured it would be faster with the more chances at weapons (least for 50/120 mines)

Good animation canceling saves time on every interaction for tools. Each tool has different time save, but it is free time save for pc players for sure. The community (on discord) decided to split categories up for animation canceling and a category for not using it, which will make consoles a little bit more even with the regular runs. The category change hasn't been implemented yet site-wise.

There is talk/some implementation of a load remover for pc, so consoles could see similar "time save" if something is decided (almost no one currently does console so it isn't discussed much).

Quick other thing as I see you make changes. I see you did a normal Trainee% no gold. I was thinking about the gold in the All%. Do we want the gold in there? I think the gold in Trainee is okay personally (if you disagree the no gold is okay)

Ah, might be best to mention it's for a 10 tribe game. My first thought was to do everything inside a single game (all upgrades, resource tiles, etc). As for the gold, I guess it's just something specifically for the All%. Just depends what kind of run it should be. Fast, where you have lots of gold to play with, or slower where you need to maybe upgrade some things and think a little more on which upgrades.

Gold would make the run easier/faster though if that is wanted.

Yeah, adding other categories for items seems a bit much, but just wanted your ideas on items. Would have the biggest impact for All%, though the extra gold item would make the other runs drop in time for sure, since you can skip a few turns of gold making to get the upgrades. I don't know how fast the items are used, but might be a guaranteed time save that is only available in a few runs a week.

But yeah, can only try it to see if it's a big difference. Also run the risk of using an item on a bad map, meaning the item is lost with no benefit.

Free% - Yeah, could possibly be better to limit free to the 2 tribes, but at that point that seems like a very small category. With that, might be better to remove it.

Yeah, limiting to no purchases to play Ruby% seems too strict. Limiting to only playing with Ruby tribes would be good enough since you could technically run into the other tribes in game anyway

Whale% sounds better and fitting. And yeah, variety is nice for a game like this I think.

Yeah, All% would be the slow version for sure. I think there needs some clarification for it though. All, like win on all tribes on trainee or just free tribes? Also, my 2 cents, trainee has the starting 50 gold. Do we want the category to have that easy money to buy any skills quickly?

Full map sounds like an okay small category. One thing that needs to be decided is if items are allowed. Can a person use an item to start with extra units or gold, or should those be not allowed? I'd say they shouldn't be allowed because they are fairly limited and you are slow to get them (meaning it'll take a lot of time to get the right item to make a run attempt) Unless we want a category specifically for it.

I was wondering, would it possibly be better to limit categories to specific tribes?

Any% being any tribe, Free (only starting 3), Rubies (only Ruby bought), and last being the purchased tribes (I don't know a name that sounds nice).

Because Arabis is available in all runs and possibly is the best for speed, meaning all categories could be dominated by only Arabis. Having categories limited by what groups can be used would make the categories more diverse for tribe use.

Right now an Arabis run could be submitted to all 4 categories. Just my thoughts.

You are welcome :P I actually had been thinking of trying a speedrun of the game, since many of the modes to get stars play like speedruns XD

When do you start the timer and end exactly? After you select the tribe and the first frame of the victory screen?

It looks like you start the timer after the map has loaded.

Specifically for in game time/days, there is no category for it. Some runners/twitch streamers (like Haboo or Tooshi) might have done something like that, but I'm not sure.

A run like that would mostly likely depend on the traveling cart to drop the in-game day count to avoid going into year 2. You would also possibly end up with the situation of people resetting days if they are trying to get a "perfect" day for the run (which currently happens for challenge runs by some people).

Pretty sure a specific emulator is fine, and original hardware is of course fine.

United StatesChikorita5 years ago

First off, feel free to hop into the discord if you feel like talking with other players :) Second, it is an interesting idea, though perhaps a "more interesting" type of run could be completing the adventure's guild kill sheet. Could be interesting with different ways to play.

Also, just curious but did you give yourself any rules about starting items? I see in the screenshot that you have an upgraded pickax + some food from farming. (You could also reach level 1 mining on the hilltop farm, if that's the name of it, to reach level 1 mining and have access to cherry bombs to travel down faster.)

I have an elgato capture device for games on the Switch, but it is a little pricey. A phone or camera is the cost effective method (in my opinion).

huh, interesting text speed increase. Guess I'm too used to holding A or B for most games. Thanks for the information!

And thanks G_heinz :P I recently hit a huge road block for my previous speedrun game so I've been looking at other games XD

United StatesChikorita5 years ago

I know this isn't a popular game (and considering it's age it probably will stay like that), but I just wanted to mention that the emulator is extremely faster than the actual cartridge for text (unless there is a setting somewhere on the cartridge version).

Just wanted to mention that, since many other games I've seen either don't allow faster emulators or simply have different categories.

edit - I also post this, because I own a physical cartridge and was checking out categories and decided to see what the original version runs at.

Probably to prevent any possible cheating or the emulator not being perfect are my guesses. Someone would be less likely to cheat if they are limited for their time (can't be #1 or a top time, so why bother cheating) --- maybe

I don't run the categories, so I don't actually know the reason(s).
