It's been a few years, but if I remember correctly the route is this:

Lizard Grind. Buy white crystal and holy water. Go east towards Aljiba, taking top route and skipping chain whip. Get blue crystal. Rover mansion. Buy oak stake and get heart. Back west towards river, equip heart for ferryman to take you to Brahms. Kill death with holy water glitch.

You only need 50 hearts after the initial grind for the oak stake in rover. Just don't game over before that point.

After that, utilize a lot of damage boost or jump over enemies whenever possible, as they will take too many hits to kill with leather whip. Game over and death abuse is fine after rover as hearts are no longer needed.

Hey, so according to @Sathdresh this is exactly what happens on the n8 pro. It never worked on the n8 pro only the original n8.

So this seems to be an everdrive issue.

What firmware version are you running on your n8? I was looking through the firmware changelog and v1.24 (released in october 2020) had some fixes for fds. Possibly this broke something?

Try firmware v1.20. That's the one I'm using and it works for sure on that one.

Definitely agree that all games belong on their respective leaderboard. On Volume 1 we also have a version of Adventure that lags waaaay less than the original. There's a difference of 4 whole minutes between the tases I found between the original and color version.

Not sure how much of that is lag vs strat difference, but I can assure you it's the fastest version by a big margin.

Hello,

This topic has been brought up in the past. Though, not publicly. It's been talked about in our community discord and in twitch chat.

The point of this thread is to have an open discussion and to hear the thoughts of other members of the community about the matter.

It also directed as a request to our former Super Moderator @Rayquaza911 since he is the only one with the power to make a change.

To the point:

As some of you are aware, there exists another version of this game. It was only released on Game Boy Color in Europe as part of a Konami Collection with four popular Konami Game Boy games on it. The port to Game Boy Color took full advantage of the hardware upgrade. Not only does it feature full color, but also the faster clock speed of the GBC eliminates ALL lag from the game. As such, it is the fastest version to run.

Other than the colorization and lag difference, it is functionally the same as the original JP release (Cross subweapon)

It is estimated that running the GBC port saves around 20 seconds throughout the full run just on lag.

The problem, however. Which prevents us from having it as a category here, is that many years ago Rayquaza made a separate leaderboard for the "Konami GB Collection Vol. 4" title here on sr.c where it resides to this day. There are four games on the collection, and each game is a separate category. https://www.speedrun.com/konamigbv4 And yes, "Vol. 4", there were multiple collection games released with colorized versions.

Up until Lunatix's run was moved over there recently since they were running on that version, Ray's run was the only one on the board. So it has not been a popular version to run.

I feel, and I hope the community feels this way too, that it would be better to have the GBC port of Belmont's Revenge, moved from the Collection leaderboard to this board right here, as a separate category, since this is where people naturally go when it comes to Belmont's Revenge.

It would get more exposure over here for sure, and hopefully bring more runners in over time. If you search for "Belmont's Revenge" on sr.c, you will not find the "Konami GB Collection Vol. 4" board in your search at all. So unless you know it exists on this collection and you specifically search for that title, you will not find it. And I think that's a real shame since it has the potential for lowest time with the lack of game lag.

I hope others feel the way I do, that the game should be moved here. It just makes so much more sense.

Since the Collection board already exists, and Rayquaza is the Super Mod still over there. What I propose for him to do if people agree that it should be tracked over here instead is the following:

  1. Allow us to create a category for this version over here.
  2. Let us move the existing two runs to the newly created category here.
  3. On the collection board, do one of the following:

A. Delete the category, post a link to our board in the forum section B. Keep the category, Remove all runs. Make a manual submission with the name of the player something like "Leaderboard_moved_Check_forum_for_info"

Let me hear peoples thoughts on this.

The much needed cleanup of the leaderboard is now complete.

You will now see two main tabs: NES and FDS to easily separate the NES from Famicom categories.

100% was also added for FDS. No change to Misc categories, they are still under misc.

Let me know if you have any further suggestions.

Damageless and whipless added as well as moved the general rules that apply for all categories (timing start / end, no passwords, approved emulators etc) into the "Game rules" tab that you can click on when you view rules so it's not a huge wall of text on every category. So now for the categories you just see the important stuff for the category and it looks a lot more clear / clean.

Ok. Since some people have voiced their support of this category I will do some work over the next few days and sort out the leaderboard layout as well as add a couple of new categories.

Damageless (misc) Whipless (misc) (subweapon only run) 100% (FDS)

I know Sathdresh already has a run ready for whipless, noisepolice stated in discord last night that he will do Damageless soon.

I'll try to find some time in the near future as well to do some runs of the new categories myself, probably by the end of the month.

Hey @ViggoTheeCarpathian

First of all: Don't apologize, you've done nothing wrong and caused no disruption for the community. From what I've heard from other people (have been unable to catch your streams for the most part due to timezones differences) you worked your ass off to get a damageless run to work out and you should be very proud of it. It's always exciting to see new people come up with different ways to beat the game.

Don't take any offense by my previous post, it was in comparison to Ninja Gaiden damageless which was brought up earlier, which is a much harder game to clear with no damage. As well as a comparison to low% which requires 240 whips to Dracula which is also very hard to complete.

Damageless doesn't interest me personally, but like I said in my first post, I'm open to adding it as a misc category if just more than 1 person complete it (once reorganization of the board is complete)

There was also a discussion about damageless in the cv2 discord a few weeks ago and at least 2 people showed interest in the category, and nobody objected about adding it under misc. I think just nobody has gotten around to trying it yet and I'm sure if we give it some more time we will see more people do it.

CV2 is pretty slow moving overall to gain interest for new categories that aren't any% or glitchless do don't feel bad about it. We had hopes that the semi-new "Any% no Wrong Warp" would get some attention since you can do glitches like floor drops and 3-block jumps, but not unintended warps. Which gets rid of the dreaded blob boost trick as well as the hard jump into death's room and the glitch with the moving platforms in Rover mansion. Felt it would be a good intermediate category since we hear a lot from new people that they don't want to run any% because they fear the blob.

Well almost 7 months later and there were still only the 2 initial runs. Until last week, so now there's 3. 100% Glitchless were sitting on 5 or 6 total runs 2.5 years ago, it has since nearly doubled and a few days ago we got a new record holder for the category. It takes time to grow.

So you see, the "non main-categories" grow at a very slow rate. Even more so I think for a challenge run due to the difficulty, it's not something you just jump into. It takes dedication and hard work for those categories so naturally they grow even slower.

You shouldn't stop running it because people haven't given it a try yet or don't care about the run. If you have fun with the game and category, keep playing.

SwedenBurb3 years ago

Damageless is certainly a challenge, sure. But not in the same capacity like a game such as Ninja Gaiden where it makes for a lot more sense and an exciting watch. Most enemies in this game have very predictable patterns and always appear in the same spot. Only some enemies like blobs, spearknights and birds pose a major threat. Add to that the fact that laurels are needed to cross the swamps and whip upgrades can be bought it wouldn't be as tough of a challenge as say low%

Like you say, there's already a lot of categories for this game. It's already looking like a cluttered mess and is in urgent need for a complete overhaul, for example with different tabs separating the NES and FDS categories.

NES and FDS as main tabs would make sense, so you can easily tell those categories apart. FDS 100% has already been routed for example, but not added as a category pending reorganization.

There's not really a minimum number of runs required to add a new category, but generally at least 2 people would be nice.

It's a lot of work to reorganize the boards completely with a tabbed layout however, and something that I've been wanting to get done for over a year now. But SRC doesn't really make it easy to do a big overhaul like that; it's easy to mess up existing runs and have them disappear completely unless you have the link, which would be a disaster. So as a precaution writing a backup of all the info for each and every run and store it in a spreadsheet or something is really what needs to be done before reorganizing can begin. Which as you can imagine with the number of runs in any% and glitchless would take a LOT of time.

I'm well aware of Viggo's run though and I'll keep it in mind as a misc category for the future if there's a genuine interest.

SwedenBurb3 years ago

I recorded a theory route last night for the FDS version, though this is vastly different as it makes heavy use of glitches, warps and save corruption. But it does 5 > 4 > 3 > 2 > 1.

SwedenBurb3 years ago

I'll go over the rules this weekend and add some clarification in terms of audio and video requirements.

For a speedrun to be verified, game audio should be present at all times. Just video is not enough. We treat every run equally regardless of skill level. If game audio had been captured your run would have been fine.

It should also be worth noting that Twitch sent out an email to a lot of stremers this week regarding updated DMCA policy for music and deleted infringing vods for a lot of people. It's not safe to play music on stream. You risk getting temporarily banned from twitch or have your account terminated if the rights holder issues a DMCA takedown. Some people have nuked their entire VOD history as a precaution.

Hi,

First of all, a reverse mansion order run is an interesting concept. But due to the fact you are required to do 2 before you can do 3 it doesn't sit quite right with me since it's not a true reverse mansion order.

With that being said, it would be possible and definitely something worth exploring for the Japanese version on the Famicom Disk System, since in that version it's possible to exploit warps to get to Brahms without having the heart. It should also end up being faster since you can save & quit after 4 and return back to Jova, saving a ton of backtracking.

As for why it works, it's described in the tas submission comments found here http://tasvideos.org/6773S.html

"When taking penultimate damage, Aladdin pauses for a split second, which for some reason can also be used to 'charge' jumps so to speak, for a nice boost to velocity. This can be used to extend jump height from 67 to 85, which can be large enough to overcome certain intended obstacles, allowing new skips. "

Nt Mini is allowed, its FPGA core is perfect.

I can't speak for other FPGA systems like the AVS or Mister as I don't own them and haven't had a chance to test their accuracy, lag is a major concern. It needs to be absolutely on point to be allowed.

Also afaik the AVS only has HDMI output unlike the Nt Mini (and Mister?) which feature analogue connections. What it means is it will most likely output 60.00 fps while the NES itself outputs 60.0988 fps. Long story short, you'll lose 1 sec for every 10 minutes of gameplay over a real console or an Nt Mini running in analogue mode. So for an any% run it will lose at least 3 seconds for a full run.

If the FPGA core is accurate, it's allowed and would be submitted as a console run. But testing is needed.

I'm not a mod of this game, but I'm pretty sure this is correct.

Well. The name of the category is "Good Ending" so as long as you achieve that and get the ending screen showing Richter and Maria, and remembering Annette - then it should be fine in my opinion. Going to the Ice Cavern and skip saving Annette would still achieve that. It would however be extremely similar to Best Ending in that regard, only difference being not going to her room and not fighting Death, right?

I'm open for it if you think it's faster. But I'd wait to hear from @lildingus or @Lucha_Gym and hear what they think.

But yeah, as long as the ending screen is correct, route shouldn't be enforced in my opinion.

If you want a challenge run, then how about low% ?
