These differences are for the Japanese version compared to the US/English version. Some things may be missing from this list.

  1. No health warning screen

  2. Blue Nintendo logo (all Japanese GameCube games use a blue logo)

  3. The title screen is different (obviously)

  4. There is no delay for when you can press start on the title screen

  5. The beginning of the title music is different

  6. The font style is different

  7. There is an extra option in the file name screen to change character sets, as there are 2 Japanese character sets in the game

  8. The Japanese version has far more lag overall throughout the game

  9. Textboxes seem to go slightly faster (the Japanese text isn't a factor in this)

  10. Chapter intro transitions are faster

  11. You cannot skip through the "Can't flee from this fight!" text at the beginning of fights in the Japanese version

  12. There is no second stylish after a normal jump in the Japanese version

  13. The X-Nauts that jump on you in the Prologue move faster

  14. Some areas of the ground that set hazard respawn areas are different on the English version.

  15. Some items and/or badges cost and/or sell for different prices compared to the English version

  16. There is no "Thank you" message after buying something from a shop

  17. There is a Toad-shaped body outline and blood on the floor of the Bandit's house in Rogueport Center

  18. Partners and Followers are much buggier in the overworld in the Japanese version

  19. The animation for going through pipes is slower, although the total amount of time for the animation is still the same

  20. Going through sideways pipes takes 10 extra frames in the Japanese version

  21. The camera acts differently while in Plane Mode in the Japanese version

  22. The moving platforms in the sewers (the one in the Goomba Trio room, and the two in the room with the pipe to Petal Meadows) do not move as far to the left and right as the ones in the English version

  23. Holding R and a direction when leaving a battle (when you have the Paper Curse) results in the Bobbery Glitch happening

  24. Some question textboxes do not allow you to press B to choose an answer, while some of these are allowed in the English version

  25. Some dialogues have more/less total textboxes in them in the Japanese version

  26. The first Thwomp quiz asks for the price of a Mushroom and a Fire Flower in the Japanese version, as opposed to the price of a Mr. Softener and a Fire Flower in the English version

  27. All fuzzies have horrible vision in the Japanese version, as they often don't even notice you when you go by them

  28. There seems to be a higher chance for stage hazards to occur in the Japanese version

  29. There seems to be a higher chance for enemies to have items/badges in the Japanese version

  30. There is a sound effect for pressing A too early on the Multibounce timing, but it only occurs if the jump is after the second enemy in a fight

  31. On the Level Up screen, the curser is set to FP by default in the Japanese version, while in the English version you have to manually move the curser to either HP or BP. To go along with this, the "Select one to upgrade!" text is not in the Japanese version.

  32. When entering and leaving Paper Mode, your direction and speed are locked until the animation is finished. Because of this, Cutscene Walks work slightly differently in the Japanese version. In order to do a Cutscene Walk out of a battle, you must enter the battle in Paper Mode first, while this is not needed in the English version

  33. There is no delay for switching between sections in the pause menu

  34. The pause menu allows you to sort a list while closing the menu at the same time, which allows for the Sort Glitch to be done

  36. Many enemies in the game cannot be superguarded in the Japanese version, while more of them can be in the English version

  37. Some fights (such as the Shadow Queen) have a lower chance of capping your Power Bounces

  38. In the Pit of 100 Trials, when you defeat an enemy, the pipes show up faster in the Japanese version

  39. Speed Glitch acts differently in the Japanese version. In the Japanese version, the maximum speed that it can give you is 2.98987484. In the English version, the maximum speed that it can give you is 2.512500048.

  40. Double Jump acts slightly different in the Japanese version, due to the differences in speed when leaving the battle (the speed differences are caused by the same thing that causes Speed Glitch to give different speed values)

  41. Peach always seems to be running, even when you walk slowly

  42. TEC's "eye" is red in the Japanese version

  43. You are not healed after chapters in the Japanese version (with the exception of Chapter 1)

  44. In the Japanese version, when upgrading partners and a partner is chosen that is not currently out (so the game has to manually bring them out before continuing), all of the animations that the partner does during the cutscene will fail to play.

  45. When entering or leaving Paper Mode while falling off of something, Mario will move downwards in the Japanese version, while in the English version Mario will move left.

  46. Koopook is in a different position (further to the left) in Hooktail Castle during his trouble in the Japanese version.

  47. Upon beating a chapter, the save prompt appears 1 second slower in the Japanese version

  48. In the Japanese version, upon pressing Save at the end of a Peach/Bowser segment without a memory card in, you are able to press B on the 2nd prompt to continue without saving.

  49. The right Pale Piranha on the Shadow Sirens screen in Boggly Woods in the Japanese version acts differently from the one in the English version

  50. Punio's textbox near the secret entrance does not pause in the Japanese version (it's the one where he's thinking about how to reveal the secret entrance)

  51. The Shadow Sirens in Boggly Woods do not say anything when at 1 HP in the Japanese version

  52. When performing the Flurrie Superslide glitch, Mario will move slightly up before going fully downwards in the Japanese version, while in the English version you will go either left or right. This mechanic allows for several glitches to be exclusive to the Japanese version, such as Ultra Hammer Early and Teleporter Room Early.

  53. In the Japanese version, some function(s) that would reset value(s) relating to partners don't work correctly, which leads to partners doing buggy things such as moon jumps and glitching out when Mario goes up and down steps

  54. In the Japanese version, if you switch to a different partner in a battle and then leave the battle, the partner will always spawn directly behind Mario, even if there is no solid ground there and/or if that would spawn the partner out of bounds.

  55. In the Japanese version, when unlocking the Blue Cage door, the game checks for and removes the Strange Sack from your inventory if you have it.

  56. In the Japanese version, after unlocking the Blue Cage door, there are several frames where you are able to move around freely.

  57. The game can sometimes crash in the Bubble Room when blowing most/all of the 101 Punies over (rarely happens, and can be avoided by allowing the Punies to exit the bubbles before going to the right side of the area by the pipe)

  58. This difference is in the Great Tree, in the room where you have to hammer the switches to gain access to the Super Boots room. In the Japanese version, the 4 statues have Punis on them before hitting the switches. In the English version, the 4 statues have the following (left to right) on them before hitting the switches: Puni, Star, Moon, Sun.

  59. In the room where the Emerald Star appears, the cutscene that makes it appear has more flashes in it than in the English version

  60. Failing action commands have harsher consequences in the Japanese version. (An example: Assume you have the Ultra Boots and are fighting Smorg. Assume his arms are gone, you have Power Plus equipped, and are attacking with Spin Jump. In the Japanese version, if you failed the action command for the 2nd hit, you would do 4 damage. In the English version, you would do 6 damage)

  61. In Bowser's levels, Bowser's name is written as Koopa

  62. At the end of Bowser's levels, fireworks are fired

  63. Power Rush and Power Rush P have a P on them rather than a D like in the English version (the letter on them is different for every language of the game)

  64. When you are selling badges to the badge shop, the badges that you currently have equipped do not have a symbol next to them in the Japanese version.

  65. The sign above the Pianta Parlor says Monte Game (the sign above the Pianta Parlor is different for all languages of the game)

  66. The boos in West Rogueport have bunny ears on them, while in the English version they have cat ears

  67. The boo in Westside Goods does not talk to the door to open it in the Japanese version, while in the English version she does

  68. If you give Lumpy 200 coins, he will only give you 500 back, as opposed to 600 in the English version

  69. In Glitzville, the sign above the main entrance says Oolongtown (the sign above the entrance is different for all languages of the game)

  70. In the Glitz Pit, all fights (excluding ones that start with special cutscenes, such as The Goomba Bros. and The Armored Harriers) start about 2 seconds faster

  71. Breaking the large yellow block in the Minor League room with the Super Hammer can sometimes crash the game. This can be avoided by charging up a full hammer spin before releasing it, as opposed to releasing the spin immediately.

  73. During Peach's section after Chapter 3, when leaving the dressing room to return to TEC after talking to Grodus, you can move while the door is opening

  74. When returning to Rogueport from Glitzville, the entire cutscene is about 7 seconds slower than in English

  75. In the Japanese version, when you are spinning the stick for any action that requires it, doing a jump will cause the stored spins to be reset back to 0.

  76. While still on the ground after fighting Doopliss 1, if you hold R and then press A, you will go into Paper Mode on the ground for a moment before standing normally

  77. While in the ground with Vivian, you are able to open the pause menu at any time, even when in a cutscene. If you do this during Vivian's tutorial, the game will softlock after the tutorial.

  78. Vivian is a male in the Japanese version, according to "his" tattle. The tattle translates to: "That's Vivian. Of the shadow group, she's the youngest sister... er, brother."

  79. Doopliss's name is ランペル, with ン being the letter that is missing

  80. In the Japanese version, after Bowser's swimming level in post-chapter 4, Bowser does not do some animations during the cutscene with Kammy: He doesn't do the animation of crossing his arms and closing his eyes, and he also doesn't do the animation of looking angry before blowing fire at Kammy.

  81. There is no slowdown when moving up slopes on rooftops with Yoshi

  82. In the Japanese version, you can get the Keel Mango from the tree in Keelhaul Key at any time. In the English version, you must first reach the Peach intermission after Chapter 5 in order to get the Keel Mango from the tree.

  83. There is an extra Flower Fuzzy on Keelhaul Key on the screen with the blue pipe

  84. The Flower Fuzzy on the screen with the 2 Putrid Piranhas will continue to move around if it falls down in the Japanese version, while it will stay still in the English version

  85. The Chuckola Cola is red in the Japanese version, as opposed to purple in the English version

  86. In Pirate's Grotto, the chest behind the waterfall contains a Defence Plus P in the English version. In the Japanese version, this is a Damage Dodge P.

  87. In the black chest room in Pirate's Grotto, when you defeat the Embers, the key will randomly go left or right in the Japanese version, while in the English version it simply falls straight down

  88. There is no animation for giving the autograph to Bub in the Excess Express

  89. Holding A when you don't have the Ultra Boots prevents Mario from moving

  90. You can start spinning the stick in the air to charge a Spring Jump in the Japanese version, while in the English version you have to land before doing so

  91. On Day 3 of the Excess Express, you get an email in the main car (the one with the shop and the chef) in the Japanese version, while in the English version you get this email to the right of Mario's room

  92. When the Smorgs appear when talking to the Engineer, they will not cover the right part of the window in the Japanese version

  93. The color of the book Super Luigi 5 is orange in the Japanese version, while it is red in the English version

  94. The Wrestling Mag has a different image in the Japanese version

  95. The Wedding Ring for Frankie's trouble in Rogueport is in a different position in the Japanese version as opposed to the English version

  96. In the Japanese version, if Frankie's trouble is cancelled while the ring is currently spawned, it will not be despawned. If another trouble is taken and then the ring is collected, the ring will set a flag that is used by other troubles. This allows some troubles to be progressed simply by collecting the ring.

  97. Many of the items at the Pianta Parlor have different positioning in the menu in the Japanese version

  98. On the Moon on the screen with the pipe, blowing up the rock containing the pipe causes a small cutscene to occur in the Japanese version. This cutscene does not occur in the English version.

  99. In the last tile room of X-Naut Fortress (the one with the moving tiles), there are only 2 tiles to walk on in the Japanese version, while there are 3 in the English version

  100. Upon agreeing to become the Shadow Queen's servant, Mario will do the animation that Doopliss uses when he has taken Mario's form. This is likely to show that he has become evil.

  101. During the 1st Shadow Queen cutscene, there are more flashes in the Japanese version than in the English version

  102. During the 1st phase of the Shadow Queen fight, you need to do at least 39 damage to her in the Japanese version, while in the English version you need to do at least 61 damage

  103. At some points in the Japanese version, some things in the game will simply not load correctly.

  104. The backtrace screen has some additional functionality in the English version. In the English version, the entire screen is used and also scrolls, while in the Japanese version only a part of the screen is used and it doesn't scroll.

  105. During pre-Chapter 5, Swindell the Bandit is moved to the far side of East Rogueport near the barrels. In the US version, there is one less barrel, and Swindell's position is slightly altered.

  106. The US version can get the "Pa-Patch: Oy, you!" email on the train at any time after sequence 327, but JP requires the "RDM Issue 5" email (from sequence 303) first.

  107. In the sewers, to the right of the Plane Panel leading towards Blooper, the platform with the entrance leading to Blooper extends 25 units further to the left in the US version.

  108. In the Japanese version, the maximum number of effs (which are pieces of graphical FX, such as the dust that is created when Mario is walking) that can be active at a single time is 256, while in the US version the maximum number is 512. However, this number may vary, as other limits could factor into this, such as the heap used for effs running out.

  109. In the outside room at Riverside Station with the Poison Pokeys and Ruff Puffs, there is a block that can be jumped on to hit a hidden block that contains a Thunder Rage. In the Japanese version, this block is a breakable block, and breaking it will cause it to stay broken until you leave Riverside Station.
