I don’t have a Japanese N64, do I need to get one or am I able to region mod/use a passport for my American N64 for valid runs?
You can also just use the American version. In 70 Star it's faster in 120 a little bit slower in 16 Star run also a little bit slower and in 0 and 1 too but it doesn't make much difference only about 2-5 seconds as far as I know.
Most people either swap the backs of the carts or remove the dust flaps from their N64s.
Alaris is right. that is indeed what most people do. personally, though I use a 3d Printed region-free tray. it's only 7 bucks on eBay, and assuming you know how to both follow instructions and unscrew things, then you'll be fine.
the reason I don't remove the dust flaps is that I collect games, as well as speedrun them. and I want my n64 in pristine condition until I can afford one just for speedrunning.
Would it be possible to just take the tray out or would that mess with the electronics?
I wouldn't necessarily mess it up, but removing the tray also removes the dust covers, so if you do, be careful with it.
@Gam3r2234 I don't understand why you need a different version than USA, you're not even Sub 20 it's enough. For me it would be too big a risk and you can start with it and then switch to Japan at some point.
Yeah it’s not just for Speedruns its mostly because I like to collect stuff and I’d like to play Japanese games without getting a whole new console
We would like to announce that VC and EMU subcategories are now active on the Stage RTA leaderboards (under "Levels"). Stage RTA involves collecting all the stars in a given stage including the 100 coin star. Timing starts on star select and ends upon collecting the final star. You are allowed to us
