Categories Suggestion

There was no discussion that i know of (nor i could find any specific topic about this in this forum, other than a single post in a much older discussion that probably just a very small percentage of the community participated in) about the "Glitched" -> "Any%" change, so to say that the board how it is now is the product of some community-driven effort is questionable. No one asked the active pool of players or even the top runners opinions about this decision, it seems that it was just done arbitrarily without any input from outside of the moderation; even though it's clearly something that will bring a lot of confusion going forward.

So yeah, i'm gonna side with trator here and say that it's almost like we are being given a standardized answer for any form of suggestion or criticism.

About the main divider for categories being framerate, i could theoretically agree with that, even though i also believe that both the Xbox controller and the Dualshock are inferior alternatives to K+M for this game. The advantage would be that we would have a very concise union of strats in the same board, since routes + boss strats are more consistent than not with the framerate.

There we go, some good feedback. One thing I do want to point out to both Zealot and Michelle, is that the 120fps categories are optimized to the point where you cannot get record with controller. 60fps PC is not on that level yet, and having slightly slower menuing does not ruin a record run. Being able to move items in your inventory with the mouse, while also being able to use it to select and deselect things in the menu, alongside the keys on your keyboard, IS a major difference. No matter the FPS. Just because it doesn't seem that way based on leaderboard position, does not mean it's not a thing. I give 120 as the example because that's where the most optimized runs are, and are examples of how different M+KB and controller are. I do understand that 30fps consoles ARE at a disadvantage, and this was brought up a while ago. I believe it would be better to make a 30fps variable, but back when we were making the big leaderboard change, a lot of people were against it. If those same people were to come forward with a changed perspective, then I would be happy to make THAT change, at the least.

EDIT: Only problem with that last part is that some people may not have submitted their console type correctly, and we wouldn't be able to tell if a run listed as PS4 or Xbox One, was actually a Pro or X.

@vinev, well in that case, you, much like trator, were clearly not around for many of the big leaderboard change discussions in the past. You can be skeptical all you want, but why the hell would I lie about that? It's fact and plenty of people were around for it that are still here today. The Any% change is different. That discussion was a bit brief, because it was a pretty small change, and was a way of promoting a category that was already on the main board. The way that category is set up doesn't have to be finalized if most people don't like it that way. But like I said, that is a very small change in comparison to what is being presented here by Igor.

We really don't need to change anything right now. The boards and categories are fine the way they are right now.

Putting console with PC isn't a good idea because of the reasons already presented. A controller will never be faster then mouse and keyboard at top level play.

On the topic of removing NG+, just why? Why remove people's hard work and dedication to a category? It might be a meme, but it's a fun meme to run.

I strongly believe that things are fine the way they are. I don't believe changes are needed. Also, the CE boards are fine how and where they are.

As someone still relatively new to the scene, what was the argument against a tab for base consoles? I run on a PS4 slim and it always seemed...a little weird that there was a fps category split, but consoles were put together.

I've been grinding Leon B pretty hard recently, so it's not something I've thought about, until now, tbh. On top of that, I've seen great runners transition from base consoles to Pro and the differences really couldn't be more apparent. Time jump, instantly, and it isn't just a skill upgrade.

Even if it's only a difference of a couple of knife slashes, that's still more time having to deal with a situation.

Guys, please, ppl are having questions about stuff ive said here like 2,3 times already. @Michelle_myBelle @Jadusable2 @ZealotHex

1- its NOT ONLY about putting PC and Console on the same thing, if Console players dont wanna be on the same board as PC players, IS TOTALLY FINE, ive suggested another idea by creating a TAB or using a FILTER under a CAT, but not having 1 CAT just for that.

2- I said about moving or deleting NG+ just because i came from the argument "maybe we can only have 6 slots on main page" and comparing to all other imo its the less appealing cat. If we have room for 7, of course we should have it too and dont just burn some ppl work.

Its all about trying to promote 6 different cats on main page instead of 3.

after all this memes, when peep that actually runs the game is gonna say something? 4Head

TBH I think the boards are fine as they are. They were set up right after the release and they have done the job since. Separating consoles via a platform filter in this instance I think is unfair. If there was two runs on console and you had extra categories with no runners it would be a good idea. much less clutter. But there's 170 runs on Leon A standard alone. Those runs deserve to stand out as their own category.

In terms of adding Pistol Only, Knife Only and True Ending to the main leaderboards is a big nope from me. There not super competitive categories, They are kinda just for fun. They are fine in category extensions.

Changing around categories/leaderboard formats in general to me is a bad idea in most circumstances and this is one of them. the boards look great.

I understand ur point Trance but maybe the reason they are not competitive is because ppl dont even know they exist. Thats why the main thing about this thread is to somehow promote other cats more than just 3 cats on main page. I didnt know about CE till last month when 1 viewer told me about it, wasnt for that i wouldnt be running it for the past month, so maybe there are more ppl who dont run those cuz these cats are on the corner.

isnt knife only run alot more these days? i thought it was competitive

@vinev I proposed the changes from Glitched to Any% 6 months ago. I've held the records in every PC Glitched category since May, and NOBODY ran the categories that entire time since I picked up all the records. 1 person started running the category a few weeks ago, and I decided to bring the discussion back up after they asked me to mod because I felt we might be able to get more people into running it. I am (or should say "was") the top runner for 6 months, and I completely, 100% support and endorse the decisions that were made based on the idea I started 6 months ago when I was the only one running the categories. It actually feels good to see that category getting attention again, which was the entire goal of those changes in the first place. But even this is beside the point of this thread. I am with @mondomantra in that if theres a compelling reason to make changes and the overwhelming majority of the community agrees, I would help implement, but I just dont see enough benefit to the proposal given that it creates new problems as it solves old ones.

@MaterialBurst that's a BS statement to make. You can't make a decision on behalf of someone else of what is or isn't fun. I think they're really fun, and less easy to burn out in because they're nice and short. I'm obviously not the only one who thinks that since we're seeing more runners come into that category. But that's derailing this thread, so let's move on.

@TheNevs no need to shitpost about me when i'm just putting my opinion on the forum

@IgorAlmeida I get your point too but I don't think that the runs in Category Extension should be promoted that much since they are "Category Extension Runs". Back in the day you would have to actually navigate to another page on the site and a completely different game to find cat extensions but now its on the navbar on the left and has its own section dedicated to it

Even though it's not going to get redone, I would suggest having it setup the way REmake / Resident Evil HD Remaster and RE1 classic does. You can get rid of the tabs for console and glitched along with removing 'PC' from the existing category titles, then add console and glitched as a sub cat/tab (I forgot what they're called since I stopped moderating a year ago). That way you can add glitched/glitchless, PC and console in their own respective sub cats/tabs. But, this requires a lot of work and I understand why this wouldn't happen. The REmake moderation staff had to do it when we went from a level leaderboard to a full game leaderboard, so you can imagine the amount of runs, categories, and platforms that had to be sorted.

Just an example of what I proposed and in response to what Igor was suggesting originally. As for how you guys want to handle the FPS differences for console, that's going to be a tough one to decide. If you're familiar with the classic RE games, you should know how convoluted those boards get sorted. Some people abide by the filter function and others hate it. It's a tough crowd to please unfortunately. Luckily for the Resident Evil (Remake) leaderboard, we never had to separate any runs with their own sub cat based on FPS mode or console type. We just left it as a filter and no one had any problems with it since the full game board revision. Maybe the decline in popularity had to do with it, or everyone just understood the reality of speedrunning on their respective platforms and didn't see a reason to change it without further complications.

Like Roofress has just said, the amount of runs that would have to be moved for this is a substantial amount, and for me to able to justify doing this there would have to be a very good reason which i just don't see currently. If people could explain the reason that they think this is so important, then of course the other mods and I will make the changes. Just keep in mind that this is going to take a while to implement if it is decided on, so verifications will probably be a little slower during that time period.

The thing is it's been hard to decide on what you guys are trying to achieve because it's been derailed so much

So, I want to start a clean slate in this thread to really understand what the community wants, I apologize for previously shutting down the proposal that was initially made so quickly. Tensions were high with the amount of runs being submitted and the workload that would come additionally from this proposal made me respond without taking into consideration the views of everyone in the community.

On to the matter at hand... The thread has been derailed several times and to clearly understand everything I ask that people keep on the subject that they are trying to propose after this post.

I can still ansewr questions if you guys have any about what was being proposed.
