Current (re-)timing rules for consoles

Timing clarifications for specific consoles:

in general: if the first input is discernable, that's the first frame, otherwise it's the first black frame or the visible first change.

[Amiga/3DO]
There are consoles where the first input cannot be discerned, such as for the Amiga. Clicking "New Game" does not give immediate visual feedback. Therefore in cases like this, the first frame is the first frame that's completely black, i.e. the end of the fade to black after clicking "New Game" (or equivalent)

[iOS/PSP/Vita/Saturn]
same as PC: first frame = first input = screen black (or says "Loading...")

[DS]
DS does not have a black frame, so the first input is the first visual difference after clicking "New Game". That can be the dock on Myst island, but can also be a partially visible game HUD.

[PS/CD-i]
There is a visible cursor hand which closes and opens upon clicking the linking panel. The hand closing is the discernable first input.

[Jaguar]
Similar to PS, the hand beginning to disappear signifies the first input and defines the first frame.

Current (re-)timing rules, specifically Any% PC

The following has been agreed on by the mods of this board in the discord.

TIMES:

The time of a run is defined as the framecount divided by the framerate, rounded to 3 decimal places, of the VOD that was submitted. (* see below for examples)

INPUTS/FRAMES:

The start- and end -frames are defined in relation to the first and last click. For the regular Any% that is the click that links to Myst Island and the click that gives Atrus the page. The former is a transition from a book-frame to a blackscreen-frame, the latter is a transition from the "page on the cursor"-frame to a "regular hand cursor"-frame (and possibly a "page in Atrus' hand"-frame).
The first frame of the run is the blackscreen-frame, the last frame of the run is the first "regular hand cursor"-frame after holding the page. (** see below for details)

TOOLS:

It is recommended to use Gelly's amendment to Exodus' UserScript with a browser-extension like Tampermonkey:

3. Open Tampermonkey, select "create new script", paste the code.

With the Youtube video open, navigate to the desired frames. (use "," and "." to in/decrease by one frame)
While on the first frame of the run (see FRAMES above), click the section labelled 1 in this reference picture:

While on the last frame, click the section labelled 2. The number underlined in green is the retrimed time. It is calculated as
(number of frames)/framerate = (5096-358)/(60) =4738 / 60 = 78.967 rounded to 3 places.

It is currently not able to time twitch-VODs (please use the frame-by-frame browser extension) and has a fixed framerate (so for other framerates, please perform the division of frames by framerate and rounding yourself). You can also use frame-by-frame to retime YouTube vods, but it requires more work.

FURTHER COMMENTS:

(*) If you record a run with 120 FPS and upload it to YT, it will be converted to 60 FPS, and will be retimed based on the uploaded VOD, i.e. at 60 FPS.

(**) There's a chance of frames after which the page has left the cursor but not yet entered Atrus' hand. The frame at which the page enters Atrus' hand is irrelevant. The one that counts is the one where the page leaves the player's hand, as no further relevant inputs can be made after this frame.

Myst - Tips for All Platforms

This guide will compile all of our current knowledge on running Myst on every platform other than PC/Mac.

If you're new to Myst it's probably a good idea to start by watching the PC/Mac guides, as the majority of the other platforms will use the same routes and practising with the instantaneous transitions of the PC version will be double-practice for running on the much slower console ports.

**PC/Mac SVM-Free**
This is the leaderboard for runs performed while running the game in any version of ScummVM other than the one distributed on Steam/GOG.
This is identical to the PC/Mac run - the only difference in more recent versions of ScummVM are quality-of-life improvements that don't affect the run.

**iOS**
This is called ‘Myst (Legacy)’ on the App Store - the other version is RealMyst.
You can turn transitions up to ‘Zip’ level on the Options screen to make them near-instantaneous, but the name is a misnomer as this version actually has no Zip Mode like other versions have.
The one quirk of this version is the ability to interrupt cutscenes by ‘minimising’ the app down to the iOS screen showing currently running apps and then reopening it. This either restarts the cutscene or skips it, depending on the cutscene. In Any%, the only cutscene we can skip with this is the rising of the gear bridge at the clock tower, so the timesave is minimal. Other than that, the Any% route is the same as on PC.

**DS**
The Any% route is identical to PC/Mac.
There are three versions - US Empire, US Storm City and EU Midway. The Midway version has more visual bugs and is preferred for TASing, but we aren’t aware of any best version for running generally.
All Pages has an additional advantage on DS - after travelling through an Age once, all zip nodes become active even if not previously travelled to.

**PS**
The PAL version is considered the fastest for PS1, since the NTSC versions can have much longer loading screens in some places for unknown reasons. Like a lot of PS1 speedruns, it’s best to run the game on a PS2 with Fast Disc Speed enabled. The PlayStation Mouse is supported and should be used for competitive times.
Zip Mode can be activated before the run which, unlike other platforms, will activate all zip locations on the map from the beginning. The PS Any% route with unrestricted zipping has been compiled in images by Spikestuff here: https://imgur.com/a/zYYTFpG
Also, disabling Environment Sounds in the options menu will make some loads faster, especially when changing environments/ages.

**PSP**
We aren’t aware of a fastest version or fastest hardware, but anything is better than loading from the UMD, so loading a backup from a memory card on the PSP, or using the downloadable version on PSP or Vita, is preferred.
The Japanese version is a common choice to run on for quality-of-life, since it's the only version that has an in-game Quit button for fast resetting.
For Any% this is identical to PC/Mac, but the cursor has to be moved with the d-pad or control stick, so it asks for a different kind of precision.

**JaguarCD**
Getting hold of one of these is likely to be far more difficult than running the game. We’re not sure if there are any speed differences between NTSC and PAL, but all Jaguars can play games from any region. The Jaguar can support a mouse via an adapter, but Myst does not support it.
The Any% run is the same as PC, but with no Zip Mode. Disabling Environment Sounds in the options menu will make some loads faster, especially when changing environments/ages.

**Saturn**
Either NTSC version will be fastest, but the Japanese version does not have one or two minutes of unskippable credits after every reset, so that version is nicer to run on if you can use it.
The Japan-exclusive Shuttle Mouse is supported and recommended for reaching competitive times.
The Any% route is the same as PC, but with no Zip Mode.

**3DO**
I have seen one website claim that the Japanese Sanyo 3DO *might* have faster CD loading speeds, but it’s not confirmed whether this is true or whether it affects Myst. We don’t know which region is fastest, but all 3DO consoles can play games from any region. The FZ-JM1 mouse is supported and recommended.
The Any% run is like Saturn and Jaguar - the same route as PC/Mac, but with no Zip Mode.

**CD-i**
The CD-i Mouse is supported. We're not aware of any regional differences other than 60Hz/50Hz. Some online sources state that the speedrunner's choice of CD-i should be the 370 model for its speed, but it is quite rare and expensive. The 490 and 740 are also stated as having more power than others, while most other models perform the same. The Any% run is identical to PC/Mac, with the exception of having fewer zip nodes available - the two zip nodes used to get back from the white page to the library are not present.

**Amiga**
Again, getting hold of the hardware is probably more difficult than the run here. A minimum of a 68030 CPU is required which means an Amiga 3000 or 4000, with a possible fast RAM upgrade also required to those. An Amiga 1200 would also be supported with an accelerator like a TerribleFire. A CD drive and mouse would then also need to be acquired.
The Any% run is identical to PC/Mac, but to date, a Myst run on real Amiga hardware has never been submitted due to its rarity.

Original MYST Any% Run Guide (Good Ending)

Anybody who has played MYST before knows that it's a hard and confusing game. Most of its difficulty comes from its unique puzzles that almost seem impossible. While HLTB has identified the total playtime as [7 hours long](https://howlongtobeat.com/game.php?id=6308) on average but you can achieve the good ending of the game in less than a minute. The funny thing is, you don't need to exploit any glitches to do this. What you need to know is that a lot of the puzzles in MYST will just lead you to the next puzzle. If you already know the end results of the puzzles, the run becomes very easy.

So lets assume that you're entirely new to the game. To speed run this game as quickly as possible, you need to complete a series of tasks.

1. Skip the intro and click on the screen in the book
1. Turn on all the marker switches on the island.
2. Turn off the marker switch on the dock to obtain a paper.
3. 6. Go up to the man and give him the page from before when he asks for it

Now here's a guide for how to beat the game as quickly as possible.

1. The time starts right when you click "new game"
2. Click to skip the intro and then click on the screen in the book
3. Wait a few seconds before you can put in further inputs
4. Once you spawn on myst, click 2 times to go further
5. Click on the right side of the screen and then 2 more times to get up to the gear
6. Activate the marker switch to the left of the gear and turn around
7. click to go forward 7 times
8. click on the right side of the screen and activate the marker and turn around
9. put your mouse between the right side and the middle of the screen
10. click 7 times, make sure you don't go into the library
11. activate the marker switch by the rocket and turn around
12. place you mouse in the same position as in step 9 but just a bit further to the right 
13. Click 6 times and activate the marker switch next to the fountain thing (don't look into the fountain thing)
14. Click 3 times forward and then turn right and activate the marker switch
15. Turn around and place your mouse to the middle-left and click twice
16. Activate the cabin marker switch and turn around to the right and put your mouse to the bottom of the screen
17. Click 4 times and make sure you're facing the clock controls
18. Click on the big valve 8 times and the small valve 2 times
19. click on the button to submit this and wait a few seconds for a cut scene to end
20. put your mouse to the top of the screen and click 3 times and then activate the marker switch
21. turn around and click to go forward 11 times (don't look into the fountain or go into the library)
22. turn to the right and click 4 times and then turn left
23. Go forward and turn right 
24. Go forward and turn left again
25. Activate and then deactivate the marker switch and take the paper
26. Click to go forward 8 times and then turn to the right
27. Go forward twice and turn to the right
28. Click on the fireplace twice and then the button inside
30. Put in the pattern from before (to speed run this game, you're gonna have to always remember the pattern)
31. Submit the pattern by clicking the button again
32. wait for the door to open after a small cut scene
33. Open the green book and click on the screen inside the book
34. You'll teleport to a different area
35. Turn to the left and click twice towards the guy
36. Turn away and the turn back to the guy
37. The time ends when you give the guy the page

This game relies on you to be very accurate with your mouse movements.
