It's seriously just my notes, and not a complete route. It's enough for me to adapt my any% route to this in my head, so it probably does not make much sense unless you can put these into a memorized route like I do.
E-2/E-3 are perhaps not fully optimized with this "route." E-3 is just a mess to route

I may make an actual route in the future, but I just don't know how detailed it should be. This is kinda just a thing to show which missions I get which gems in.

This route is very detailed, but you can learn a lot of it pretty quickly. That is why I also made the [Any% notes guide](https://www.speedrun.com/lm2/guide/odxd9). You may use that if you feel you don't need the detail in this one.

Some room names are different for PAL English and NTSC-U English, so that is why there are two routes here. Choose the route depending on your region. Europe uses PAL and North America uses NTSC-U.

Also please keep in mind that I am not intending for you to learn the game completely from this route. It will get you started, and it will be enough for your first run, but there are a ton of little strats that the game has that I did not include in the route. Watch the WR to learn some fast strats for the places where you feel you are slowest. Also check out the strategy guides listed in the guides section.

Additionally, collecting gold is among the more difficult things to learn. Because of this, I have created a separate document containing some information which may make it easier. If you are just starting out though, you may consider ignoring gold until you learn the route.

LM2 Speedrun Strategies

This is a non-comprehensive list containing many tricks, skips, and strategies that we use in speedrunning this game. It is a major work-in-progress, so please excuse the lack of videos and full descriptions. If you have any suggestions or feedback, feel free to let me know.

Major Time Saving Strategies

***Any% Only***
**Cutscene skips:** Unskipable cutscenes like the opening cutscene and "cutscenes" for unlocking poltergust upgrades or the scarescraper can be skipped by simply resetting your game when the save icon appears. For example you can reset your game right as you start your run to skip the opening cutscene. You can also skip unlocking things by resetting your game right after the save icon appears after you finish a level. So if the level is A-4 or you know you got enough money to unlock an upgrade, reset your game after see the save icon (with the greenie).
**A-1:** You can spin the fan in the foyer early by going half way up the stairs (to the flat part) and looking up and to the left.
 
***NG+ Only***
**Capturing Ghosts:** Sense the upgraded poltergust is already very fast at filling the charge meter, don't worry too much about getting doubles and triples with ghosts, a lot of times it is faster to get ghosts separately then waste time trying to set up a triple.
**Try Hard Time Save:** You can start a new file, play all the way until E-Boss (don't beat E-Boss), get all the upgrades (super poltergust), and then run on the file. You will go right from E-Boss to King Boo skipping multiple loading zones and animations.
**A-1:** You can open/flash the door to the outside in the mudroom to skip an E.Gadd call after you open/flash the door to the coatroom (you can do this because you already have the flash).
**A-2:** Get the key in the first floor hallway using the dark light instead of the side room.
**A-3:** Take the A-4 route through the Hallway to the Patio and then the Kitchen (you can do this because you have the dark light).
**C-3:** You can two cycle the ancient poltergeist by doing a poltergust gauge two the first cycle (the one that does 20 hp), and then a gauge 3 second cycle (the one that does 50 hp). https://clips.twitch.tv/PrettySmoothTardigradeFunRun
 
***All Runs***
**Avoiding damage while sucking up ghosts:** press b while sucking up ghosts to jump and avoid attacks
**Revealing Ghosts:** Many greenies use items like shields or shovels to make it so you can't immediately stun them, but if you use your dark light on them, they will reveal themselves. However, when a greenie is moving away (looks like swimming) you cannot reveal them through darklight. You can flash them in this swimming state to get them to focus on you (unless they are a fully blind greenie like a buckethead), which you can then use the darklight to reveal them. Additionally, when a greenie is laughing (but not laughing after they hit you), you can always stun them then regardless of their item.
**A-3:** Double the poltergeists but looking north and up, close to the north wall, and flashing as soon as you can see the left poltergeist.
**A-Boss:** On the final phase of the fight, drop the web ball in front of the knight that lights the ball on fire. Then push the ball into the fire (if the initial slam from the knight didn't) and push it all the way to the spider to light the wall behind it. Shield skip is also possible like in **B-Boss**
**B-1:** Interacting with an object skips the Luigi scare animation. You can use this in the Greenhouse to skip the scares, specifically the second scare to skip the ghosts from spawning. www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI4mGoypPr0
**B-1:** In the Skybridge with the crows, run immediate after skipping the cutscene to easily pass.
**B-3:** You skip a slow animation after the E.Gadd call. www.twitch.tv/videos/242843244
**B-4:** In the Rumpus Room, you can leave the room early if you get the second and third ghosts together.
**B-5:** In the Conservatory, you can skip the ghosts by waiting for the lights to come back on after finding the ghost dog and sucking up the creeper. You simply walk at the door while spamming X and you should go through. www.twitch.tv/videos/156009590
**B-Boss:** Stand still while the staircase boss is attacking you (getting hit doesn't matter) as the boss turns to face you and that turning animation is slow. Also you can perform shield skip on the possessor by stunning it soon after it pops out of the staircase.
**C-1:** If you are quick in Cargo Room you can pull off the sheet and flash the bomb before E.Gadd calls you.
**C-2:** Whenever you are sliding down a slope, suck with the poltergust to go faster (Also useful in **D-2** and  **D-3**)
**C-4:** Walk towards the dog at the end of the mission very slowly, slower than walking speed, and flash when your flashlight's light is touching or almost touching the dog.
**C-5:** In the crank room with the slammers and key, capture the slammers and then grab the key. After getting the key take the left path (the path you came) back.
**D-1:** You don't have to fight the greenies in the Smokehouse.
**D-2:** You don't have to fight the ghosts in the Smuggler's Hideout.
**D-3:** The hider triple in the Basin is easy. Simply look up at the walls the hiders spawn at with a fully charged strobulb and release it when you can see the hiders.
**D-Boss:** Shield skip like in **B-Boss** is possible here.
**E-1:** Don't spam x to try to open the front door, it produces glitchy and slow effects.
**E-2:** Optimal Route: Dark Age →(Portal)→ Bucket to Entrance →(Portal)→ Dark Age → Ice Age →(Portal)→ Entrance → Jungle →(P)→ Wood to Entrance →(P)→ Bucket to Jungle where you water the plant but **do not** rescue the toad → Ancient →(P)→ Entrance →(P)→ Wood to Ancient where you light the wood →(P) Lit wood to Entrance →(P)→ Jungle where you rescue toad →(P)→ Entrance →(P)→ Lit wood to Ice age where you rescue toad 2 → Courtyard
**E-4:** Look ahead. If the train is south don't reveal boos south reveal them west. You can tilt your DS up to make sure the boo doesn't hit the ground in front of the train. 
**E-5:** Optimal Route (Note Portals go through Entrance): Courtyard → Nautical →(Portal)→ Space →(Portal)→ Ice Age →(P)→ Dark Age (See skip below) → Kitchen (See skip below) →(P Ice Age)→ Ancient →(P)→ Jungle → Restrooms → Kitchen → Terrace
**E-5:** You can skip the ghosts in the Dark Age Exhibit and Kitchen by quickly traveling to Dark Age Exhibit from the Ice Age Exhibit after getting the ghosts in Ice Age, then you go right to Kitchen and that will skip those ghosts too. www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKLMDMlgvpE (Left Video)
**E-Boss:** In the third phase of the fight if you run into the first foot stomp of the giant knight, and sometimes (probably RNG dependent) you skip the knight's sword attack if you quickly run from one foot to the other after the first foot stops on the carpet. https://clips.twitch.tv/EnchantingJazzyDogDAESuppy
**King Boo:** Face away from King Boo and quickly turn to face him and then look away again when he starts his charge attack to cancel it and get him to start the dive attack sooner. Try to get King Boo to get hit by the first falling ball and hold the vacuum to start sucking him up right away (unless you think you are in danger of getting hit while sucking him up in which case it's your call). Remember you can press b to avoid the balls and spikes while sucking up King Boo. Interrupt King Boo's attempt to do another dive attack while you are sucking him up by doing a gauge attack **if** you believe you will get hit by his shock wave. If you don't think you will be hit by his shock wave, let him dive so that you don't have to avoid the balls on the ground.

Physical vs. Digital & Setting up Save Date Backups (Digital Only)

Physical vs. Digital

	The Digital version of Dark Moon has no advantages over Physical in terms of speed, rather it only provides convince when switching to specific categories or restoring the information on a file.

Use for Save Date Backups (Digital Only)

	The 3DS allows you to backup, restore and delete save data on Digital games. This allows for runners to have access to more than the 3 files the game offers right after the title screen. It also saves loads of time with preparing files for specific categories.

	Our most common use of this feature is to restore what we call a "NG+ File". If during a playthrough you finish E-Boss for the first time on a file, King Boo will send you straight to the final level, skipping two pixelator cutscenes and saving around 25 seconds. A common strategy used by top runners is to set up a file right after you finish E-5 and have the Super Poltergust upgrade, in order to save the most time on that file. If you own the Digital version of this game you can backup and restore this save so that you don't need to play through almost the entire game all over again every time you beat E-Boss on that file.

	There are a few categories on our Category Extensions leaderboard such as All Gems and All Boos that recommend or require specific things to be or not be completed in order to run the categories.

Setting up Save Date Backups (Digital Only)

	If you are someone who has just recently picked up the Digital version or are interested in it, here is how to set up all of your saves in the shortest possible time. When creating backups be sure to not save over other backups and instead create a brand new one each time. If you aren't interested in messing with glitches involving E. Gadd Storage, skip Step 1 completely.

1. Finish Secret Mine without collecting optional boos or gems - Create 1st Backup
2. Finish E-5 without collecting any optional boos or gems - Create 2nd Backup
3. Beat King Boo - Create 3rd Backup
4. Restore 2nd Backup
5. Capture B-5 Boo and C-3 Boo - Create 4th Backup
6. Unlock A-Bonus, B-Bonus, C-Bonus and E-Bonus and collect 1 gem - Create 5th Backup

Backup 1: E. Gadd Storage Experimentation
Backup 2: Extra save that can be used if you accidentally delete 3rd, 4th, or 5th Backup
Backup 3: All Boos
Backup 4: NG+ File
Backup 5: All Gems

	Be careful when messing with save data backups. The last thing you want is to accidentally delete something and lose hours of work. If you're trying to set up backups and are confused about the steps, you are welcome to message RexBmx or Riidolsk. Our best form of communication is in the Luigi's Mansion Discord Server.

Record 3ds without capture card

I will only be telling you what steps to take to record your screen, you should already have homebrew, you can most likely find a “How to homebrew 3ds” video on youtube.com
-Side Note #1- 
You will need the 3DS ip to do this, you can have your 3DS IP set to anything you want to make sure it doesn’t change. And to do that;
3DS/PC
Open Settings - Internet settings - Connection both the 3ds and PC use - Change settings - Go right once - IP Address - No, detailed set up - On a windows computer press the windows button - search “cmd” and open it - type “ipconfig” and find where it says “IP address, subnet mask, gateway”, and copy what numbers it says onto your 3ds, except for the IP. change the last 3 digits to something that doesn't copy your PC - for DNS - Pri: 8.8.8.8 - Sec: 8.8.4.4 
-Side Note #2-
You can check the 3DS IP by opening FBI - Remote install - Receive URL’s over the internet and it will display your IP


3DS 
With the latest “godmode9” hacks also come with the application “FBI” which allows you to install “.cia” files, install other homebrew files, view your sd card contents, dump your sysnand etc. Using that, we will install a file which you can find here.

Download the first one in the list named “BootNTRSelector-FONZD-Banner.cia”
To install it, take your sd card out of your 3ds and put it in your computer, OR, open system settings - data management - microSD management - select network. Make a folder on the root of sd card called “cias” and put the file there.
3DS
Open FBI and and select “sd”, then open “cias”, and “install and delete” the file you just downloaded. Press B until you get to the home menu, then press start to close, now the file should now be on your home screen. Open it and select “use default” and let it self-install.
Now open it again and select the latest version and let that run.
PC
Now for finalization, download an ntrviewer, the one i use is called kit kat, you can find and download that here.

Open that and type in the 3ds IP, then press connect, the screen on your 3ds will flash blue for a second then return to normal, and your 3ds screen should be on your computer. Now you can record with a PC recorder such as OBS.
