I believe they updated Dead Rails and made it impossible to get 3 coal in the shop when you start the game; making it impossible to beat any other current speed runs. As they all are older versions where they get 3 coal instead of 2.
I've tried getting a run for an hour now, never seeing 3 coal in the shop, its always 2.
The hour was streamed on Twitch and will later will be uploaded unlisted to Youtube.
If someone else would like to test this and/or vouch, or even prove I'm wrong I would much appreciate that.
But I do adamantly believe its impossible to get 3 coal in the beginning shop. And would like to be able to actually get a run in that competes against others and isn't a literal impossibility.
I think the "updated 2 coal Dead Rail runs" should be separate, like when the sprint update was added but I don't know I may be wrong or just very unlucky.

The game recently received an update which means that runs using the sprinting mechanic are now accepted on the leaderboards! The recent game update confirms sprinting as a permanent feature.
