I primarily run the Arcade Version of Daytona, but I was thinking about potentially trying my best at the home port of the game at some point soon.
I do not currently own a Sega Saturn, but I do own a physical copy of the PC version of that original Saturn port for Windows 95, and have a disc drive to play it on.
This port is seemingly identical to the Saturn version in almost every way, with the only difference I notice being PC specific settings and "Saturn Mode" being "PC Mode" now.
Would the PC port be a viable way to run that version? I'd likely run it by passing my CD through to a program called 86box, which allows me to accurately emulate a full Windows 95 PC with period accurate hardware in a Window that I could capture using OBS.
I am way more experienced with the arcade version than I am with the Saturn version of this game. But I'm pretty sure that if the PC version were as similar to the Saturn version as you say, we would have PC on the leaderboards by now. @Varuuna may have way more to say about this matter and with more knowledge as well.
The PC version isn’t as well known as the Saturn version or widely discussed, so that’s likely a major contributing factor. It might be worth a comparison to confirm that they are identical enough to be comparable, like the PS3/360 Ports to the arcade.
If I recall correctly, I decided the PC release felt different enough (and with not really any players behind it) that I saw no reason to put in on the leaderboards, especially not with Saturn.
If you're down with it, feel free to play and record some gameplay and send it my way to look at again. If I feel like it just doesn't seem or feel the same worst case we can just prop up a PC version category as well, I'd be fine with that.
I can also test and compare pc gameplay and timings with the saturn version, I already did a comparison between different saturn region versions.
I’ll get some footage of the PC version running on Windows 98 later today when I get home (or later this week if I end up not having time), l can post it in this thread so everyone can take a look. Hopefully it can help, and a side-by-side would be great as well.
Went ahead and captured some footage here. This is not a run, just normal gameplay, as I did some light editing and took multiple attempts at each course, but it should hopefully be enough to provide a worthwhile comparison to the Saturn version. Not my greatest performance, especially because I was stuck with keyboard since I struggled to configure a gamepad. If you have any questions on more specific details, just let me know.
The setup I used to record the footage was running the game inside 86box. 86box is a PC emulator that emulates real hardware rather than just being a typical virtual machine. I set up a machine inside of 86box with a Pentium MMX (I don’t remember the clockspeed, but I chose the fastest one), a virtual CD drive, and installed Windows 98SE inside of it.Once the drivers were installed I used the “Host CD drive” option to pass my real copy of Daytona USA into the VM to install the game, and to load the in-game music while playing the game.
In game, I used the options menu (accessible via the alt key) to change the Display Size to small, as the game ran poorly in fullscreen.
Hello! A small update.
The Saturn leaderboards has been split between PAL and NTSC-U/NTSC-J/PAL60.
This was made a bit in haste (and with loopy me past midnight) so let me know if I missed something or should alter this split.
Post-sleep edit: It's now a basic PAL vs. NTSC split for Saturn, m
