I'm interested in running this game but I see the leaderboard is undergoing construction. As a series moderator for star fox who has added sub categories to 2 of the games, I can definitely say you can really benefit from them.
How to do it?
Essentially, the default view would be EXACTLY the same as on the left side. The real magic occurs once you get into character specific runs (for IL's)
Each character is an IL, so this will be your main categories for IL's.
The first Sub Category would then be Difficulty. AFAIK, there are 3 leaderboard difficulties currently in use here (Very easy, Normal, Very Hard), so these 3 difficulties would be under the "Difficulty" sub category variable.
The second Sub Category would then be "Version." AFAIK, only NTSC-U and NTSC-J are current "versions" allowed (probably called "English" and "Japanese" for ease of access for other submitting runners).
That would essentially make leaderboard hella clean looking. For reference, Star Fox (SNES) had 13 categories and looks like this, and Star Fox Assault had an IL leaderboard w/ 9 main categories

So there needs to be more information out there, it's really bare, only shows difficulties and timing method.
Star Fox 2 is an unofficial game, therefore it is under the impression that unofficial emulation is the standard for this game. That being said, "Reproduction cartridges" would technically be considered the "emulated" version of this game.
So, a few things needed so others can run the game how they see, as well as making leaderboard newer runner friendly as well.
-
What is the standardized emulator used for this game?
-
Are reproduction cartridges allowed for this game?
-
Standardized rom?
All this info would need to be in the default rules list for this game.
My thoughts on each are as followed:
Standardized emulator -
Pick one and ensure all runs use this same one. Does it have to be accurate? Not really, but once again this game was only "released" through unofficial means, so a lightweight emulator w/ bad accuracy compared to a heavy emulator (bizhawk?) are some factors and things that need discussed. I always want accuracy when it comes to emulation, but this game is a unique case.
Reproduction cartridges -
I'm very console biased so I think they should be allowed, but from testing from me (and probably others), emulation will always be faster for this game since this game uses the FX chip. Not worth assuming until data can be crunched, but maybe a sub category of "console / emulator name" may be worth it if all else fails.
Rom -
Idk I don't know anything about this.
So yeah, we need to tidy up the way stuff is for this board just figure out what emulator works best for this game, also we'd need a way to link to the roms / emulators used once things are finalized. However, we can't link directly to rom sites for legal reasons, so a sorta middle man site would be needed.
None of my ideas are worth keeping if not wanted, that's why this thread was created, to discuss how to go about making leaderboard look better as well as officially standardize stuff for people wanting to join community.
HUGE NOTE: DO NOT link to any rom sites, nor are you to do the "site DOT com" route. I recommend avoiding linking to any site at all, or at very least post the links far away from this website (i.e use the discord yo)
Leaderboard now has sub categories. If there are runs missing, submit them and we'll verify, me and Lowkeeee did our best but some runs weren't able to be saved due to twitch. Dates were not saved so if you want your dates accurate edit them (or beat that run ;3 )
Thoughts, comments, or anything to say about leaderboard? How are the rules? If changes need made let us know here so we can fix it.
Just worth a discussion since I'm going to all the star fox games that could potentially have sub categories and fixing up the leaderboards. It may be that this game won't need them but that's what I want to discuss.
SF64 has an N64 version, a Wii VC version, and an IQue version, each with its own set of lag reduction strats for each. So, would you guys think it's worthwhile making subcategories that specify which console is used? In essence it exactly the way it looks now, just with a 2nd line the shows what Platform was used.
Sub Categories added to make it look neater. Anything else we miss? Thoughts? Comments?
Thought it could be useful, some people do no badge runs, some do speed badge, but other badges seem to be optimal over speed so would be nice to have a column for badges
Think it'd be possible to add "All Snags" on the leaderboard? Me and Golderzoa have already done runs of it. Can link runs if needed
Runs for this game must be recorded using a capture card as of August 10, 2015.
Runs submitted / verified prior to this date will be valid and allowed to stay on the board.
This may seem like a dumb question but to elaborate, in the About it states it is to be a "one-stop shop for speedrunning leaderboards."
Does this mean that this site is meant to be a collaborate data base of every speed run known, regardless of whether the run is done on console, console emulators, community accepted emulators, and banned from competition emulators?
I am asking this because I moderate and speed run games that have issues w/ them being emulated, such as Star Fox, and atm we currently ban any emulated run from being accepted as no emulator is remotely accurate for those games.
Though reading this site's About is making me wonder if this is the right thing to do. I know it's community driven how the rules are stated, but is the goal to host only "legitimate" speed runs?
I define legitimate speed runs as ones done either on console or on a community accepted emulator slower than or equal to console.
It's come to my attention that the way we time this game would be more beneficial if we turn to IGT, however I only have limited knowledge as I ran this game prior to mission objective skips.
When I ran it, mission 9 death abuse was the leading factor as to why IGT was not going to be used as the IGT did not factor in how long it took to die so, optimally, one would have wanted to take 0 damage, complete the objective, and fall off edge. This would cost, depending on the difficulty, 10 - 20 seconds RTA to save IGT time.
I for one do not care if the IGT does not count milliseconds in this game, and I do understand that times w/ the same IGT could differ by 1 frame all the way upwards to ~ 10 seconds.
Therefore, with the way the game is ran nowadays w/ mission objectives skip, do you see the IGT being accurate enough to be used to compare runs? Please list all positives, negatives, concerns, and comments.
IGT PROS:
- Only actual game play will be timed as the IGT does not count cut scenes, mission transitions, and loads.
- Runs across Wii and Gamecube will be even competition as Wii's are known to load faster
- Mission 1 has an odd cutscene that has random skip points, which won't affect runs anymore.
IGT CONS:
- A new rule would have to be put in place in case death from non objective skip.
- Some runs would have to be removed that used death abuse (mine included but I'm fine with that).
- IGT does not display milliseconds, so missions with an IGT of 1m50s could vary by .98 seconds (for full game)
- IGT must be calculated manually as it is the sum of all mission times in a single segment run.
- Pause buffering
COMMENTS:
- If one were to die in a run (either due to losing all health or failing a mission objective skip) and still "pb," should we calculate the adjusted IGT for that mission?
Replies: Yes. That being said, this would fall on the moderators to ensure all runs submitted have accurate IGT sums as well as an accurated "adjusted" IGT for missions w/ a death that doesn't benefit the IGT
(will keep updated)
This is something I feel needs to be figured out and agreed upon. I have an idea on what should be the definition of 100%, but it must talked and agreed upon before we can implement this officially on this site.
Technically, the "game defined" definition of 100% is completion of the game in which every objective has been completed. This doesn't fit well in typical 100% runs since there are additional items / content to get, but those do not factor in the percentage counter at all.
So, let's discuss this and come to an agreement.
