Hi everyone. I've been meaning to get this pretty well confirmed for some time, but I'm trying to get the correct framerate for the NES Classic. I do not have one of those so here's where I'm asking for help and it's a pretty simple task.

If you have a NES Classic, a capture card and can record at 60FPS, I'd appreciate if someone could do the following.

Local record starting the game from the title screen and just let Mario stand still on 1-1 until the timer runs out, let the death sequence complete and you can stop the video there.

Upload the video to YouTube or something and a reminder I need it to be a 60FPS recording and not 30FPS.

If someone could help out that, it would be much appreciated.

We are now accepting runs using the Switch version of SMB1.

I did the calculations last night using a video from @SuperSonic and used emulator as well help to get exact framecounts for comparisons.

The game appears to run at a flat 60FPS. I also did some testing for the SMB3 folks and I'm getting the same thing over there.

Be aware that this is slightly slower than running on NES or PC emulator, but faster than the Virtual Console options. If you run Any% and get into the time threshold of where we start calculating milliseconds using the Bowser patterns, the FPS of the platform you used is used to calculate your final time and should closely match that by timing the video of your run. Runners are not awarded "free" time savings because they used a slower platform.

Let's say you got frame 18000 on the blubbler screenshots and show some examples of the time differences running on different platforms.

NES/Emu time (18000/60.0988139) = 4:59.507 Switch (18000/60) = 5:00.000 WiiU VC (18000/59.94) = 5:00.300 Wii VC (18000/59.824) = 5:00.883

This is just an FYI to display the differences running on different platforms so the time differences should be easy to see.

This is covered in Barnowl's post with the Global Bans / Allows post from over a year ago, but the platform rules follow that of the main SMB1 leaderboard.

You must use an acceptable platform and if you're using emulator, you are required to list what it is or it will be rejected.

I went ahead and posted those rules for every single one of these 40 or whatever categories so that it's crystal clear and shouldn't give an avenue to say that someone didn't see it.

This is just me being nitpicky, but it's not necessary to ask us to retime your run in the comments. We retime every single submission that we get regarless if it took you five minutes or five hours to beat the game. We never just look at your splits and assume that is correct.

That being said, please make a reasonable attempt to give an accurate estimate of your time. Within a second if your Any% time is 5:03 or above and within a couple tenths of a millisecond if your time is below 5:03.

Additionally, if your time is above the threshold of where we include milliseconds (5:03 for any% and 19:12 for warpless) you don't need to go through the effort of submitting with the milliseconds as we will remove it anyway.

Since this has just been released, discussions within the moderation team need to be made before we determine how we will handle runs played on the Switch. Any runs that are submitted on that platform will sit in the queue until we figure out things such as the framerate, lag accuracy, etc.

Please don't necro the forums.

If you don't know what that is, it's posting a response in a dead thread. If there are no responses in weeks, months, even years, just leave it alone unless there's a really good reason to do so. It clutters up the top of the forum with threads that aren't relevant anymore.

There was a lot of interest in bringing back the weekly warpless races. I ran a poll and the winning time was 9PM EST on Saturdays. If you are interested in joining, just show up on SRL a little before 9PM EST on Saturdays and join the race. Hope to see you all there!

Hey guys. I have opened registration for an SMB1 Warpless tournament to start about a month from now. All skill levels are welcome to join. I have a few restreamers and commentators interested already, but I may be looking for a few more. The information about the tournament including the discord server and so forth are on the challonge site. Hope some of you will join and if you have questions, let me know.

Hi, everyone. I wanted to throw the idea out there to see if there's sufficient interest in me hosting an SMB1 tournament.

I would likely start this sometime after SGDQ.

I feel we could either do any% (best of 3 races per round) or warpless.

If you all have an interest in this, let me know your thoughts and category preference. If there's enough interest, I will likely start one. I don't want to start one if there's going to be like less than 10 people.

After quite a bit of discussion, the mods have decided to implement some requested changes to the leaderboards.

Runs under certain times will no longer need to be streamed. We understand the myriad of reasons of why a run might not be streamed, such as age, anxiety, internet issues or time restrictions, so the rule has been removed to accommodate those who cannot stream. However, we still do highly recommend streaming runs if possible.

When verifying high level runs, we reference previous attempts, practice sessions and the like to gain confidence that a high level run is legitimate. The more we have access to, the better your chances are of getting a run accepted. Therefore is it recommended to keep local recordings of attempt sessions which can be uploaded upon request.

We have decided to remove the IL boards starting in 7 days. This should give everyone time to look at or backup something there that they may want. This decision has been made because these boards create a high quantity of runs for mods to verify, delaying verification of other categories, use inaccurate timing and in most cases don’t provide any extra information. Removal of individual levels isn't a new concept, as the mods of SMB3 and SMW have also removed their IL boards.

A document will be made to preserve some of the more interesting individual level strategies using the in game timer, which will be accessible in the ‘Guides’ section on speedrun.com. We have also added a frame counted 8-4 IL category to the category extensions leaderboards that can be found here.

So far runs that use a save-state to return to the title screen have been tolerated, but future submissions that use it will be rejected. This goes for all save-states including the virtual console "restore point". Runs currently on the leaderboard or in the submission queue will remain.

The following categories will be removed from the boards:

  • user-defined categories
  • Beat All Levels as Mario and Luigi
  • All Underground Zones
  • All Water Areas
  • All Warps Deathless

“user-defined categories” lead to some very silly or arbitrary categories being added and resulted in a lot of verification work. “Beat All Levels as Mario and Luigi” is simply the game beaten twice with different sprites and already better covered by “Both Quests Warpless” or “★8-4 Warpless”. The other 3 have very few runners. As with the IL leaderboards the boards will remain for 7 days to allow people to look at or backup the information. Remember, you can still run the categories and post your runs to the internet, they just won’t be tracked on speedrun.com. You can use the Category Requests Thread to request categories from now on.

Thank you for reading the changes to the rules. We have thought long and hard about these, and want to make the leaderboards as good as they can possibly be. If you have any questions, please ask them below, and a mod will get back to you soon.
