I might run it :D

I'm into Game Boy games, especially random ones like this. I've got a lot on my table, but I may be able to squeeze this in soon.

I'll get to that 10-20min. list. I have a bunch scattered throughout my notes, and I haven't had time to compile them into one list.

Bloo Kid 2 might be a good option. I am just starting to learn it. It is a very simple platformer. It comes in just under an hour. It is free on ios/android, and it's cheap on Steam (from $1 on G2A) ios/android has ads, but it's good for practice, and there is an extensive list of IL categories. You can post screenshots instead of video, at least for IL's, since it goes by IGT. The IL categories include single levels, as well as 8-10min worlds, so there are many options to suit the length that you want to play. We just worked out a glitchless option for the full game runs. There is a glitch in the ios/android version, but not in the PC version, so PC runs are basically glitchless. Even then, the ios/android glitch isn't complicated. All you do is die on a slope :P

Also, I will plug Spanky's Quest, just because it is fun and unique. I'll be practicing it more soon. http://www.speedrun.com/Spankys_Quest_GB

Good game choices :D

Yeah, true.

That reminds me of this one game (this is a terrible example without knowing the name, but bare with me :D ) Basically, there's a mode where you can have the cpu do everything, so the speedrun is basically like playing a slot machine, haha

I don't think either of us thought that you meant "no separation based on load times" :D I meant to imply that load times is a legitimate enough reason on its own to separate platforms. There is no need to entertain JakeRook's claims. Not that it hurts to give more examples, as you have done, but I just wanted to point out that load times could stand alone.

That may be the case for God Hand, but it is not the case across the board. Faster doesn't always mean better, nor does it necessarily equate to a faster speedrun. It could be a matter of control for some people. Efficiency in control could outweigh speed for one person, enabling them to do better overall. There are many factors involved.

Ah, and to comment on your use of "efficiency" (my mention of efficiency just now wasn't a direct response to yours), speed may not always be the most efficient mode of execution. Having better control, rather than better speed, might enable one person to do better--to be more efficient. You could say that better speed equates to better efficiency, but that is a subjective idea.

And yes, our examples are related to what you mean. It's just that Broly and Halfcoordinated are very specific examples, just as your God Hand example is very specific to God Hand. A preferred control scheme in a single game, or even in a particular genre, does not equate to an overall objective advantage of one type of control over another.

More to the point of this discussion, even a generally accepted advantage doesn't seem like a good enough reason to separate platforms in a competition. In this regard, I don't think you're wrong, I just don't feel that it is a common enough concern (Correct me, if I'm wrong. I very frequently see platforms split based on loading, but you are the first person that I have seen mention controllers). Fighting game tournaments don't separate competitions based on types of controllers. There isn't a separate Premier League for players who want to...okay, I tried to make a football reference, but it has to be a basketball reference :D There isn't a separate NBA for sleeved jerseys-only (there are players who think that sleeves are an advantage, and some find them to be a hindrance, but they have to wear them). There isn't even a separation on the God Hand board.

I also think that anyone who is concerned about the advantages of one controller over another would simply acquire their preferred controller, making it even less necessary to separate platforms based on that.

That's a good question. The simplest way would be to have three main categories, one for each mode. If you like the idea of making Time Trial mode for scoring instead of speed, then you could specify that in the rules. For Challenge mode and Practice mode, I like the idea of having a couple categories for different point totals, but maybe it wouldn't be necessary without many runners. That makes something like this:

Challenge Mode Practice Mode Time Trial (high score)

or just Challenge/Practice/Time Trial, so it doesn't look cluttered.

If you don't like having a high score category, then it's a decision on which mode would be best for "freestyle" play. I would say practice mode, since it has less restrictions.

That leaves the question of how many point increments you want to have. At most, it would look something like this:

10pts Challenge 20pts Challenge 10pts Practice 20pts Practice Time Trial (high score)

I say "at most", because we're the only two playing it so far. With more people would come the opportunity to increase the point levels, but I'd personally keep challenge mode at 10/20. Practice mode can feasibly be continued ad infinitum.

@Aureus_Lunae

"This is why runners prefer to limit the amount of RNG in their runs as much as possible. "

I'm straying off-topic by saying this, but I think it's unfortunate that people feel this way about RNG. For me, randomness makes things more interesting. There is skill not only in basic execution, but also in one's ability to adapt to given situations. That's also where races come in. If two people of supposed equal skill race a game with zero RNG, one of them will win the race. Was it good luck? Was it exceeding skill? It's a combination of circumstance and skill. "Luck Is what happens when preparation meets opportunity."

Oh, and please don't take my remarks as any sort of comment on the main issue. I am speaking solely towards your few comments on RNG/luck/skill, completely out of the context of the thread.

haha, I was about to ask you to describe it. By "exploration", do you mean non-linear?

It looks cool. Nice add.

Loading times is legitimate enough of a reason to separate platforms. I have seen this occurrence on many leaderboards, and it seems to be a typical concern. I have never seen controls play a factor in separating platforms. Is it commonplace, or a common concern? I feel like the type of people who would be concerned about the advantages of M/KB would already have--or would end up just getting--the PC version.

I will outright say that the advantage of PC controls is not objective. JXtUwIW7cL8 ...halfcoordinated playing Momodora 83nSodg-HTU ...Broly playing Street Fighter

The Momo example doesn't really speak to the point that I'm trying to make, but it is an example of how a perceived disadvantage isn't necessarily so. The second example is perfect. People say that arcade sticks are best for fighting games, but here is a player that plays not only with a controller, but with a controller with his mouth. Sure, these both might be outlying examples. But, for every Broly and halfcoordinated, there are many other people who simply prefer a controller. It's only a disadvantage if you limit yourself.

I'm hosting an Air Grind tournament. The entrants so far are Kirby, Surfing Pikachu, and Sonic. We need more entrants, so we can pitch this to ESPN!

Is there grinding action in Air Ride? It looks like Kirby Kart, from what little I've seen, and it's not side-scrolling. A stand-alone Air Grind could have been cool on GBA, maybe even better on 3DS.

@kirkq awesome!

@blahpy jinx!

Posting high scores /and/ speedruns would make SRC so much better. Shoot-em-ups (as well as other random genres) would be more relevant, arcade games would have an added level of competition, and it would attract more competition in general. Speedrunning might be a niche thing, but all gamers can get into scoring.

Hey, milk :D

I saw you mod request this game, so I've been playing it and waiting to see if you got modded before mentioning these things.

This game looks fun, but challenge mode is brutal. I still like challenge mode, but it would be sweet if there was a category for a mode that doesn't game-over after every miss. Challenge mode might even play slower, in the long run, because double shots are so risky. Challenge mode is overall very risky, so playing in practice mode or timed mode would add variety to the board. 100% seems arbitrary, but I'm not opposed to it.

Practice mode would be like a freestyle mode. The timed mode wouldn't be relevant in terms of the timer (it doesn't function linearly), but it is possible to score many more points from combos, so it plays a lot different. You could even invert the board for the timed mode in order to keep track of high scores, rather than fastest to a certain score.

I just think that the board could use some variety besides challenge mode, and these are just some ideas. I'd like to hear your thoughts :)

Looks good to me. If anything needs to be mentioned, then I probably won't figure it out until I get some times up. I'm working on my first playthrough, at the moment.

I have a question about world times. The wording of the rules sounds like segmented world runs are allowed. Am I reading it correctly? Does the game automatically add up all of the best times? (I haven't unlocked the IGT, so I don't know.)

Yeah, I was going to mention that I plan on buying a 3ds, so I'll see about it then.

I use a few different programs to get certain games the way I want them. I won't have access to my PC for a bit, so I can't check to make sure, but I think this is one that I use: http://westechsolutions.net/sites/WindowedBorderlessGaming/

It's windowed borderless, though. You can resize and position the window via the software's settings, but you can't simply click-drag the window. You have to manually type values for resolution and position.

Sorry if you mentioned that one already. "dxwnd" looks familiar, but the file name isn't listed on the site for me to check.
