Mods for individual games control the Twitch links. Site staff can probably handle this as well. The streams page could probably use an overhaul at some point.
What Timmiluvs said here is pretty accurate.
Both ways work. My Twitch messages or the site e-mail.
Your point here: "Sure, some versions are imposing slowdowns compared to others by introducing animations and delays on line clears and piece placements, so there is no direct 1:1 comparison between top times in a game such as jstris and Puyo Puyo Tetris"
Cross comparing data from multiple games with uneven timing condtions is somewhat confusing. The 40 lines times are often below 30 seconds, so slight timing differences are a large contributor. From my perspective, we'd probably rather not get in the business of making a board for a whole genre unless there's a very strong reason to do so.
Subcategory is the best way to do it generally. Sometimes these get split out into separate games as well if the games are different enough.
I'm fine with this, but I think there are a lot of higher priority tasks.
Changes pertaining to previous "Memes" boards:
My perception is that calling it a "Memes" board somewhat makes the game name unprofessional, and subliminally encourages people to do stupid things with game covers and category names. We're changing the name to "Category Extensions", because that's what it technically is. Treat it like an extension of the board for now.
Consider the fact that some boards have been allowed this an exception, not the norm.
My opinion of "Category Extensions" is that it's fine only in the specific case for highly popular games as a temporary solution to a current shortcoming of the site. Misc categories are intending for tracking miscellaneous things. Separate boards are not intending for tracking miscellaneous things. I think the ideal situation would be that the site lets you have "multiple full game and IL boards" per board, such that there can be multiple tracked "boards" within one board. In my opinion, that's the issue creating most of the desire for separate tracking. My hope has been that we can get the functionality to merge these back eventually. In addition, any merging will be less of a headache if we can minimize the number of these that exist.
Category extensions MUST be added or approved of by moderators for the games they are based off of.
Factors:
- Large number of runners on main board
- Misc categories not providing sufficient mechanism for tracking.
- Official commercial releases only
- Probably other stuff
If you don't meet these criteria, you probably don't have a strong need for one. This policy also somewhat applies to Multi-Game boards.
If people start adding really stupid ones, I will start deleting them.
Also, any comments on site limitations necessitating the desire for these boards would be appreciated. Why not use misc categories? Do we need something slightly different? Is there something we can do in the short term that doesn't require massive restructuring?
TheBronyGames: If the community of people who have existing runs of the game wants to have a forum vote for who they want to mod the game, they can do so. I generally recommend at least 2-3 mods per game. Not making changes right now because it is sort of he said/she said.
Ty2s: Added.
DrJordo: Run has been sitting over a month, so this is probably fine.
SneakyPanda: Use the game's forum to sort this out for now. There's a thread there for feedback and discussion.
YamCider: Ok
Atroz: It looks like you were added.
randomphoenix03: I bumped one of the mods up to super and removed the highly inactive mod.
ciborgue: Added since you have a run.
Frikkinfriks14: I changed it to an expansion for the short term, still sorting out game guidelines over time.
PrinceRallis: Didn't look at this in much detail, just went ahead and changed it.
ROMaster2: Where do you see "Allow Base Game" ? I'm not sure what that is or does. The base game attaching has been broken forever, but it's not that crucial to anything. Handling Expansions like Rom Hacks I agree is dumb, I'll try to discuss this with the coders soon. There are a couple other "type tags" I want to add.
I'd still like it if we could separate "consoles" and "methods of play" eventually. Playstation console variations and things of that nature.
It's fine to add, but you probably need to convince/bother Pac to do so :P
BabyMoogle93: Discuss it with the other moderators, they are active.
seckswrecks: Added.
Tron_Javolta: It looks like stuff was added.
aKittyKat: Added due to runs in queue and inactivity.
Rylux: That request should go through game moderators first.
Schlangenleder: Since the board is empty I'll just add you, normally I'd want to see a run.
daangast: It looks like some people were added.
KillerHUD: Run has been pending a while, okay.
robthegamer117: I'll just turn over the board to you by discretion in this specific case since the mod doesn't have a run. Please add a couple more of the runners.
GhostKing: Yeah the category creation in this case seems pretty silly. Making a board and not even listing full categories shows really low effort.
yellowelevator815: Looks like this was handled.
Mysteriousdewd: Added.
Dustiel: After looking at the forums a bit, ok.
The daily meme board was handled by other staff, I don't know all the details. If you do stupid stuff like that you might get banned for a while, FYI.
Racingmonster: If a super mod for one of the games wants to request it I'll add it. Use the game request form.
Blucario90: I probably meant to mark it as a mod and missed.
ROMaster2: N64/GCN games are unique enough that I don't think it's necessary to mark them as expansions. Expansions probably generally imply that you need the base content to play the extra stuff, which I guess is technically true for the F Zero thing. I also think having a single digit number of N64 games is not worthwhile. It's definitely opinion territory. ROM Hack should imply unofficial release, and expansion probably shouldn't be used for most older console games to give some level of consistency.
Frikkinfriks14: Thanks for the response. I'll continue this discussion with site staff, but I'd like to point out a few things that are largely my opinion. I'll send you a tweet in advance if we're going to make changes. Not sure right now.
This post probably sounds slightly antagonistic, but I'm just trying to explain the pragmatism from my perspective.
I personally do not want the main portion of this site to contain a bunch of "real life" type races. The thing that was accepting is like right on the boundary. Fastest 100m dash, fastest Rubik's Cube, and fastest time to chug a 2L of soda are greatly outside site scope, and start to become extremely difficult to moderate sensibly. Video games fit a set of constraints which much of the community has some generic agreement on what's okay and what's not. The "tabletop" category was added essentially on a whim without much discussion. I personally would've said no, but someone else didn't which is also a valid opinion on the matter. I would've also rejected the game request for the physical object, but someone else didn't. This situation is directly at odds with site precedent, and will be cited frequently as a "they can have it but I can't?!?!?!" People want some level of consistency with the site. The argument "X needs a home" can be detrimental to the overall quality of things on the site. Setting bad precedent is bad.
I think the further we extend the boundary into real life things, the more diluted the rest of the content gets, and the more unmanageable the site gets overall. I have exactly zero intent to manage moderation requests for fastest 100 meter dash if that was a thing that were to be put on the site.
I do want to have some things eventually like allowing users to create boards under their profile maintained by the user. I do think we need to better isolate content so people can see what they want. Right now this is sort of handled through the "unofficial games" mechanism.
I have similar concerns with a lot of the garbageware flash games and mobile games that make it onto the site.
Quoting from an arbitrary blob of text on the about page, that probably didn't have much thought given one way or the other. Even wikipedia seems to think speedrunning largely applies to video games. It's just a word though.
speedrun.com is a site that provides leaderboards, resources, forums and more, for speedrunning.
Speedrunning is the act of playing a video game with the intent of completing it as fast as possible, for the purposes of entertainment and competition.
You made literally 20 more posts in the last 2-3 days, half of which were stirring the pot with the mods some more. Look, I don't know the details on your past interactions, but with the way the past few days have been going, I'm not going to tell people they have to put up with people who flame all over the forums. If the pot wasn't constantly being stirred, there would likely be no predicament in the first place, hence my strong suggestion to chill out.
I looked this one up on urbandictionary to get a concise description:
flaming An online argument that becomes nasty or derisive, where insulting a party to the discussion takes precedence over the objective merits of one side or another
I played through Remedy 2 twice. If you want to add me I can verify runs if they sit. Tohloo has been handling most of this game lately. Also I think you're missing the secret REALLYDAD mode.
bluewiregaming: Probably going to be my last post today. Regarding: "Me actually being a provocative troll and trying to encite a reaction OR them displaying bias in their rejection of my runs." It's also possible both are true or partially true. Life is gray. You've also created 64 posts in the last two days, some of which were deleted. My suggestion is to let it cool off. If it cools off, maybe everyone can arrive at some rational conclusion.
Tron_Javolta: If you want to do runs and then link a couple of them here as a basis for the claim, you can do that.
DreamSeeker32: Please discuss it with the moderator or make a forum thread on the game.
Star: I'll turn it over to you primarily because the user doesn't record anything and hasn't responded to forum posts.
Rubberduckyassassin3: I made the change earlier this week, I imagine you already saw it.
uhTrance: Looks like you were added.
Mopsi: Looks like you were added.
Renegade522: Seems fine in this case after reviewing the logs.
PrinceRallis: Added you to one, bumped the mod up to super on the other.
soupG: Ok
JerQ_Q: Give it a bit more time. It's not a requirement that moderators verify runs every time they visit the site.
RoboticDream:: It looks like the moderator is around. Feel free to request moderation through them.
Tron_Javolta: I made some smaller changes. Since you don't have a run, I'm not going to add you through this thread.
BatOuttaHell24: It doesn't seem like you have a run, so if there is an issue, I'm not sure you're the person to solve it.
Hoobie: There was a pretty major issue last time you were mod on an RE game. The other moderators can add mods at their discretion.
TheTrueCorrectGuy: Discuss it with the current moderators.
SpeedySpiderSponge: This is an awful suggestion for the problem. This is exactly why name changes are handled manually.
Racingmonster: You're probably not helping this situation. Please don't contact me just because you decided something in this thread needed attention. Otherwise I'd probably get 5 messages a day. If the site isn't on fire, staff will get to it when they have availability. If we want to talk to people, we're probably going to go directly to them to get their input.
bluewiregaming: There's some gray area between dealing with people supposedly being a nuisance and objective moderation of boards. Given that the game has 7 moderators, I can't imagine all of them have some ridiculous personal vendetta against you. There are 81 users running this game that don't seem to have this problem. If runs are supplemented with argumentative comments and a bunch of pot stirring in the forums it gets really annoying for mods to deal with. My suggestion would be to let this cool off for a while instead of continuing to stir the pot. That includes the way too many posts already made in this thread. To address one point, I'm pretty sure the streamers list is tied directly to users with runs on the board.
Just an FYI, I just happened to go through the thread today starting prior to anyone contacting me. This thread is typically processed about once a week.
