actually, 1-1 is one of the few levels that can allow for a decent amount of variance in times at the top--i believe without l+r the max is r12, and in runs most people get r00-r03ish. the main problem with 1-1 is that most people would just play 1-1 a few times to get a relatively low-skill time and then never submit another time, so there would be a massive amount of runs and basically all of them would be below-average.
also, you'd get a situation for warpless runs where people could submit all 32 levels as il times, which would mean the il leaderboard would be constantly inundated with hundreds of runs that are just part of longer categories.
so yeah most of it is just that it would be ridiculously hard to moderate, and it doesn't help that most levels are relatively simple and straightforward, even if you end time before level transition, so that framerules wouldn't matter. so the pattern of a tiny few high-level runs, and then a massive wave of low-skill runs would also apply to the other levels.
i don't mean to speak on behalf of the mod team, but that's just my understanding of why smb1 doesn't have an il leaderboard.
I DON'T SLEEP MOTHAFUCKA!!! also gg! category dead đź’€ i might try and squeeze out a couple extra frames tomorrow
I suppose starting from gaining control would be better, although it's hard to tell exactly what frame the player gains control. Something better might be starting from the first movement of the player's camera--so you could like, sit idle for a bit and timing would only start when you first move the player/the camera.
Also fastest death sounds interesting, might add a category/misc. category for it, since this game is kind of limited on category ideas lol.
Also, some other timesaves I can think of are reversing out of the tunnel before the second fish, to save having to turn around there, and not turning for the final "picture". I've found that the angle for that doesn't actually matter--the monster will always spawn.
A more theoretical timesave is reversing before turning to face the monster during the final picture, since looking forward will stop the invisible wall from spawning and allow you to touch the monster faster once you turn around. I just don't know if it actually saves time, since I don't know if the monster goes forwards faster than the player can move backwards.
Edit: I also think you don't have to look at the map once you take pictures, in order for them to count. The only issue is it can be hard to gauge if the picture actually did count, especially if you take a riskier approach.
i mean afaik there's no rule against it, but that defeats the entire purpose of doing the game blindfolded
@ZachGSpeedrunning no, 0.5 seconds. the 0.5 seconds that are lost are independent of framerules, like lag frames in a way
in that case yeah you should be fine
it's only really luck-based in that most of the hard tricks you see in top times are so hard that the humanity of the runner becomes the luck factor. aside from that, there's basically no rng once you start getting times under 5 minutes.
it wasn't necessary to get wr, and because -2 ffpg is so hard it's reasonable to assume he also wanted to try and cut down on resets as much as possible
if timing ends when touching the flag, yes. if timing ends when mario enters the castle, no.
we already have 1-1 as fire mario, we don't need anymore 1-1 category extensions.
honestly, just do elevator bump. the """easy""" 375 3 bump method is very misleading--yeah, you don't need to do elevator bump, but you both get way less xpos from the bumps, which means the pipe entry is a lot tighter, and it's actually really hard to get 375.
the only problem with a true combined pal/ntsc leaderboard, like that of mk64, is that pal has fundamentally different physics compared to ntsc, since mario is faster on pal to make up for the slower framerate (the time difference between the versions comes from the fact that the timer counts down at 5/6 the speed on pal). this means that things like floor clipping, ffpg from pole inputs, 1 bump, 372 in 1-1, and 341 in 4-1 without fast accel are all possible on pal, but not on ntsc.
also, i forgot to mention that a lot of ils have like 0 challenge to them--all you need for tied wr for 4-1 il is just a fast acceleration at the beginning of the level, and the rest of the level is, well, the easiest level in the game. same for 1-3, 1-4, 2-3, 2-4, 3-2, 6-1, and 7-3 ils as well.
the only other il i could maybe potentially see being added would be -3, cause aside from that and 8-4, ils are kinda useless because of the framerule system.
also the mods probably don't wanna deal with like a million submissions for 1-1 il every day
^ yeah i'd say don't submit runs that weren't a pb at any point
no, in pal it's possible to clip through the floor, which the pal tas does to save time in 1-2
that is true, but if they can prove the recording was made on nestopia they should be fine, since nestopia can't create or play back tases iirc
