tbh, you can probably discount one of the january votes. It was only after i voted that i realised that my vote as a viewer only is less important that the ones made by people who will be running/organising...

Hey

I've done a couple of stratless runs of this game, but would like to know how you do a couple of things so that I can incorporate them into the run... (any timestamps I mention are referring to the 2nd place run (), as I watched that because the WR is muted...)

  1. Whats going on in "Safehouse"? Whats the trigger for the interrogation cutscene?

  2. How do you pull off the trick where you climb onto the first building at the start of "All Ghillied Up"? Would I be correct in guessing that your trying to find a "sweet spot" of some sort?

  3. When carrying McMillan through the city in "One Shot, One Kill" is there a consistent way of doing this? At 1:12.20, it looks like your skipping the spots that trigger enemies to spawn? (I did realise very quickly however that on recruit difficulty, they scale down the enemy AI to hilariouslyly dumb levels here.)

  4. How are you doing the inifinite running/jumping thing?

  5. Anything else you think I should know that I might not have noticed, or would not be immidiately visible just watching the run?

Thanks

Charlie

As I was sweeping the false floor on Sunday afternoon while packing up, S asked me if I was having fun. Clearly this was a sarcastic question, because as a rule, noone who voluntarily takes up the task of sweeping an arena floor is having fun.

But, you know what? I was.

If someone had told me that discovering GTA speedruns on YouTube from ESA's and GDQ's gone by, then discovering Twitch a few months later, then downloading OBS and starting to broadcast myself, then a bunch of other things, that it would eventually lead me to the middle of Sweden, I would have told them they're as stupid as Jones in the Fast Lane speedruns.

The event for me was just surreal. Meeting all the #GTA crew, and many others besides was great. Hosting and doing tech was all great, despite my shortcomings at both.

The event is what you make it. If you're cool just hanging on the couches watching the stream all day, then that's all good. If you're more into getting to know others, the Mafia crew was looking for players approximately 99% of the time. The challenges (F-Zero and Beethovens 2nd) were there to be beaten and the sweet sweet McNuggets(TM) to be enjoyed. I had a go on a HTC Vive, which I would not have been able to do.

Just hanging with like minded people is great. My IRL friends don't play games much thesedays, let alone speedrun them. I'm sure there are a few of you in a similar position, so being able to talk nerd stuff and not have peoples eyes glaze over is pretty cool.

No specific shoutouts, because we'd be here all day, so just a general one to everyone I talked to at some point. You're all, just great.

ESA - I'll be back again next year.

I was Tech and Hosting, here goes;

As a member of the tech crew;

  • Depending on how many set-ups you have to do, I think we could have done six hour shifts to be honest. I could have at least. That would eliminate the need for a 4am-8pm shift, with a 12-6am and a 6am-12noon, which in my opinion are much easier shifts to plan your sleep around. Speaking of tech schedules, you Senior tech need to get more poeple to be able to do so you don't burn yourselves out so quickly. Or get more people on the job, so the combined intelligence of the group = one senior tech.

  • The youtube uploads being automated was a lovely touch that very much eased pressure on us. HUGE shoutouts to Oromit.

**- I think it should be a rule with all runs of 1h or less that as soon as a run starts, the next runner should be getting set up straight away, and then doesn't disappear again until their run is over. Yes, that may mean that the runner then has to sit around for an hour if set-up is not a problem, but will certainly reduce stress if it takes a little longer, and won't affect the shedule if set-up takes half an hour. I'm aware that this is not always possible because you may disturb the current runner, but should be stuck to at all other times. Perhaps a slightly different floor plan for the PC's and console areas would make this possible in a larger number of cases. ** You may ask yourself, "Charlie, if you thought that was a good idea, why didn't you do it this year?" Well, I guess it's because I felt like I didn't have the authority. But, if I'm tech again next year, I'll try to make this happen in all cases where it's possible to do so. (Attempting to schedule PC/Console/PC/Console would also be good)

As a Host;

  • With the interviews, it would be nice if we could ask the runners in advance if they would like an interview. And have some sort of system of showing the hosts on the laptop if they will/won't be. That would remind them to look up some "flavour facts" of the game beforehand. Maybe (even though it's cheating a little bit) ask the runners to give us some questions they would like to be asked? Not so they can shamelessy plug themselves, but more of a jumping off point to get a good conversation going.

  • The meeting was a good idea, but the trouble with that for me is, i only saw that it happened a few of hours ago.

  • I would like some sort of system that tells me when the camera is going to be back on me. A couple of times I was interrupted by twitch ads and embedded ads.

As a general attendee

  • I can't compare to anything, as this is my first event.

  • Showers being in a different building to the mass housing was a little frustrating. I heard from one person that because there were no "private" showers (cubicals or similar) that one or two people locked themselves in for privacy. You know what, I actually don't care about that, because we were told "We will likely be able provide at least 5 private showers and a number of communal showers." and not everyone is comfortable with communial showers. There is an arguement to be made that says if you care that much, get a hotel. Well, not everyone can afford that, and your attendance of a video game event shouldn't hinge upon if your accustomed to communial showers. I just showered in the middle of the night when everyone else was in bed, just for ease.

Unless you have loads of heavy gear with you, as i'm sure some of you do, the walk from the train station to Fortnox Arena is only a 20 minute walk or something.

ok, so who HAVE you got emails from. you didn't reply to my email...

Who are the "Senior Tech" people? Also, are the hosts on a separate schedule?

I too have carried out the actions that you require in order to facilitate the efficient organisation of this charity event.

If you want to check out what it looks like to play online, and get a feel for things that are going to happen, you can watch a few broadcasts here: https://www.twitch.tv/ryuzilla/profile. I'm not sure what, if any, of the power roles they, but once you see how it's done, understanding the power roles is easy.

It also has it's own "game" listing on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/directory/game/Mafia%20LIVE!

Do you think it will encourage some people from RA3.org to post some times? If so, great!

Either way, I don't see any reason why it couldnt be put here.

I've said in my stream from time to time that the day we find a way to skip the cutscenes will be a glorious day. Unfortunately, I don't think today is that day.

See, the problem with removing parts of the game is that if it's cool to remove the movies, where does it end? If thats allowed, running the Allies Campaign with all the soviet and empire assets deleted could be allowed. So, following sitewide rules, any modification of the final, official patch release is not allowed.

'Tis truely a sad day that we have not found a way to skip cutscenes. :(

Having said that, does this bring us any closer to figuring out a proper way to skip cutscenes? Special key press? I don't know how to get into the game files myself. If someone could poke around in them and see what triggers the game to play them, and if theres a way to fool itself into thinking it's being played, or has already been played, or whatever, there will at least be 6 happy people.

Hello everyone. Thought I'd take the time to post some concrete rules, and to reiterate the sitewide speedrun.com global rules.

  • All runs must be completed on the latest OFFICIAL patch, version 1.12.

  • All runs must be completed with all original game code intact. No removing, modifying or adding any game code.

  • Individual Level runs MUST show the full run AND the final screen where the In Game Time is shown. Any runs submitted without either of these parts will be rejected.

  • Full campaign runs are measured from the moment you first take control of your units at the beginning of the first mission, and ended when the final "Victorious" message appears. (Split times are optional)

  • Any glitches possible within the confines of Version 1.12 are free to exploit.

Thoughts? Post em.

Im just a humble viewer, but I immersed myself in the event so much I might as well have been there.

Id like to register my approval of the layout. Watching the streams made you feel like you were part of it, as opposed to just watching a runners usual stream, just with a different background... Im sure something could be done about the sound, maybe using the little mics that look like they're stuck to the users cheek for the people on the couch, and an ambient mic mixed in quietly. If its possible, and I'm pretty sure this is a this, make the ambient mic quiet itself if it picks up something too loud, like cheering etc from the other audience on the other side of the room.

Its been mentioned before, but a wide angle camera for for times when the host isnt talking or the stream is off for an extended period of time would be great.

Finally, dont worry about the chat nonsense. Trying to stem the flow of garbage that flows through it is about as useful as trying to stop a fireman's hose with a peice of toilet paper. There are IRCS that can be used by the people who want to, and at least that way to can keep all the toxic bull in one place.

Yeah all full runs will be calculated in real time.

Cornford, if you could go ahead and add the list a made a couple of posts ago, Michael can fill that out with his times.
