Yea, he's a meme. Here's what verification consists of (at least for me): check whether the submission has the correct category/console/region, quick skim of vod, check whether time starts/end at the right spot.

I don't see the purpose in requiring another mod to verify, if someone abuses it it'll be caught quickly

North Carolina, USAalaris8 years ago

Since like two years ago we've required video for every submission. Most of the runs on the leaderboards without videos are from before this requirement or had vods at the time of submission. We've had several arguments about whether we should remove these times or not.

PS: atmpas submissions are no longer private, he even resubmitted the run so another mod could verify it (although it was not necessary)

You don't have to if you don't want to. I was just saying that some people submit to one and not the other and the result is that neither leaderboard is accurate. So, i'm trying to fix this by adding the zsr runs to srcom. In the end, I want srcom to be complete, so if you had to pick one I'd rather you submit here.

So as you probably know, there are two separate leaderboards for this game, the one on this site and the one on ZSR (http://www.zeldaspeedruns.com/leaderboards/oot/). Many people submit to both, but a lot of people submit to one or the other, so I'm trying to add all the runs from ZSR that aren't currently on this site. That way at least one of the leaderboards is mostly complete.

For now, I'm just adding the times and not worrying about the vods. The twitch vod embedding on ZSR is currently broken, so theres no way to recover the vod url without going to the runner's highlights and finding it manually. On top of that, twitch recently (within the last year I think) changed all the vod urls from /c/ or /b/ to /v/ with different numbers. So basically it's a pain in the ass, but I plan on getting around to that eventually.

If you notice any obvious errors feel free to pm me. I do a lot of this at 3 in the morning so I'm sure I'll make some mistakes. Also, if for whatever reason you don't want your runs on here, let me know.

I also plan on adding in all the old world records for each category so that the record timeline thing on the game stats page is accurate

I have an everdrive that I practice with, but I'm terrible at talking about it from a technical standpoint. As far as I can tell from practicing it feels exactly the same (and I think as far as your N64 hardware can tell, IT IS the same), but apparently there is some extra lag from saving. The most notable difference is that you can't reset to game, only to the everdrive menu which takes a few extra seconds to navigate.

See this: http://lambdan.se/125/everdrive-64-and-speedrunning

There has never been an official discussion about everdrive. Personally, I am ok with allowing everdrive runs and have accepted a few lower tier everdrive runs. I think there is a lot of confusion about what everdrives and flash carts in general actually do. Some people think they're emulators.

I'd say it's ok to do runs on everdrive, but if you plan on taking the game seriously it's worth investing in an ntsc console and cart.

We're waiting on Pac to bulk move all the runs to their respective categories, should be fixed within a few days. I've already fixed a few runs by hand, but there are way too many.

North Carolina, USAalaris8 years ago

There's a little more to it than that. Unless going for top tier times or doing single stars/stage RTAs most people aren't too anal about retiming. That said, for timing by hand, you'll want to power on/off and start the timer at the flash that occurs about a second after powering on. If you're lazy you can start your timer at -1 second and power on and hit timer at the same time

As dumb as it sounds, if you use the reset button, the timing starts when the shutters appear (basically as you hit the button), so it's "faster" to use power switch over reset button. I agree that this sounds retarded, but it's how things are ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Perhaps Gothic or someone will pop in and clarify further

Probably not, we're already pushing it by showing/allowing gameshark by default. I respect single stars for their skill but i don't do them or really follow them, so my opinion doesn't matter much. Think the people that do do single stars (mainly jp and like toastrider lol) want to keep status quo

We're currently changing the formatting of the leaderboards, unfortunately hiding VC by default is something we (SM64 mods) can't change. So we're waiting on Pac to help us out. I made a thread explaining this not too long ago cause I expected confusion

North Carolina, USAalaris8 years ago

As you may have noticed, the leaderboards are in a state of flux at the moment. We're trying to implement the same formatting as mk64 (http://www.speedrun.com/mk64), which is similar to what MarioRuns had before we moved the main lbs here.

We know that VC runs are hidden by default and everything is currently listed as N64. We are working to fix this so just be patient, hopefully within the week things will look normal again.

That'd actually be pretty nice, I'll see what everyone else thinks before I mess with anything. It might be a hot minute before we change it cause it'll probably involve editing a fuckton of runs and I'd need like a whole day to do it

North Carolina, USAalaris8 years ago

Personally, I wouldn't mind a misc categories section with 30/31/45, but I can see why other mods don't want them. Besides maybe 45 star, no one seriously runs these misc categories so it's hard to draw a line on where to stop adding them. Add your times to http://www31.atwiki.jp/sm64/pages/31.html if you want to compare with others.

North Carolina, USAalaris8 years ago

If you want a real reason why we can't do it, it's cause of speedrun.com's formatting. I would be for doing that in a heartbeat if it was possible to do in a way that wouldn't clutter up the page like mad. The only work around I can think of is to add 120 star (n64), 120 star (emu), 120 star (wiivc), 120 star (wii u), etc. imagine what that would look like.

btw, marioruns went down cause no one wanted to run the site

I don't completely despise the layout, but would be nice if it minimized to halfscreen better. I usually have my browser half-screened.

North Carolina, USAalaris9 years ago

Those categories aren't real, it's just an unfortunate side effect of how we shoehorned mario ILs into speedrun.coms format. We had to treat secret stars and bowser stages as stages themselves and as far as I know there is no way to hide the stage RTA thing.

Until someone can get it running even somewhat accurately it'll probably stay banned. If I remember correctly even the in game time was screwed up, like on ord mantell which is an autoscroller, you would save igt on the train part.

Honestly, even the pc version is kinda screwed up in the same way, which is why it's separated in the leaderboards :p
