Not sure if you are trolling or just plain stupid.

Anyway, this thread was only meant as an overview for the changes.

Because Mingura is being annoying, I will now lock this thread.

For any other questions, feel free to open a new thread.

Are you even listening to what we are saying?

Emulators have different loading times depending on your PC setup.

All official releases have a consistent (although higher) framerate. This is easily fixed by converting the framerate (60fps on Switch) to the original GBA framerate to make it a fair competition.

If you don't have anything useful to say, just shut up.

are you saying that you want new categories for TASes?

TASes and RTAs are always seperated, for the one reason that one is done real-time, the other one is done with slowdowns and savestates. things that are specifically banned in RTAs.

TASes are usually also done by multiple people. they would never be on RTA boards, that would be ridiculous.

you can find most TASes on tasvideos.org.

just keep in mind that TASes on that website usually go through a lengthy verification process, so there's not gonna be hundreds of different TASes for the same game, especially not with different categories

We had a lengthy discussion on the Yoshi Discord with a bunch of testing and retiming with a lot of people and 2 people who ran the game.

Feel free to join the server and read through it. You'd probably come to the same conclusion.

Speedrunning has to be fair for everyone. If an inaccurate emulator is allowed, which gives everyone different loading times, there would be no fair competition.

GermanyVolpey3 months ago

No. All emulators are inaccurate. Different people would have different loading times.

The Switch version is really accessible, I would just recommend using that.

GermanyVolpey3 months ago

Low% has been added to the boards on zewing's request.

There's a few levels where a score of 0 is not possible. You still need to get the lowest score possible tho. If a strat is found where you can get an even lower score, all old runs will be rejected.

GermanyVolpey5 months ago

no emulator runs, because they're all inaccurate. it would be a race to find the fastest emulator

Hey guys!

After some discussion on the Yoshi discord server, mt decided to make me mod.

We talked for a long time about the state of this game. Despite it not being as popular as the SNES version, I wanted to clean it up, so I can moderate runs in a timely fashion.

Here are some changes:

  • Emulators are not allowed anymore - After some investigation, we came to the conclusion that GBA emulators are inherently inaccurate and will not be allowed anymore. chris has done some great comparisons, and you can see that the current WR run saves a few frames or maybe even seconds in every transition. So to make it not a competition who can find the least accurate emulator, we decided to ban it alltogether. If a better emulator gets developed in the future, emulator runs might be allowed again.
  • Timing changes - Of course every other official release is gonna be allowed. The issue is just that different consoles run on different framerates. To make it more fair, we decided that converting the times would be the best option. The baseline timing will be the framerate from the original GBA release Here is an overview to all the relevant framerates. When submitting a run, make your to convert your time accordingly, when not run on GBA. And note it in the submission notes. Here is a useful website for easy converting.
  • Game Boy Player and Game Boy Interface will be added.

So here is what I'll do now:

  1. I will reject all emulator runs. Here is a spreadsheet of all the old emulator runs
  2. I will be retiming all the times to GBA timing
  3. Add GBP and GBI

With all this, I hope to make competing for top times in this game more fun.

If you have any other questions, feel free to DM me here or on Discord.

@YUMmy_Bacon5 But some runs do show the submitted time on the profile. It's really confusing. Either way I don't think it should be shown because submitted time =/= the time you did the run.

Great bug fixes so far.

But what I don't understand is, why it still shows one of 3 random times on the recent runs and the profile of the page, even tho the submitted and verified time is completely different.

On the last screenshot you can also see that the picture of the game in profiles and on the frontpage is still wrong, even tho it shows the correct one in your followed games when you click on "Games"

I think it puts players who can't or don't want to do this kind of glitch at a disadvantage too much.

are you even listening to yourself?

you know the whole point about speedrunning is finding the fastest strats possible.

all i hear from you is "i don't want to learn a hard strat, so please make a seperate leaderboard so i can have a higher rank"

the reason why there's different categories for something like 11 exit and 11 exit no cape is, because they require fundamentally different skills.

according to you, every single category should have a glitched and glitchless category.

just a single glitch (for example a single orb in world 2), does not warrant a new category. stop being lazy and learn the glitch.

Also for runs with no date to say "never" looks kinda weird. Maybe just use — or something.

I really like the update, fixes a lot of issues I've had with the site in the past, but here's some things i noticed:

  • Game names get cut off, depending on the screen size. It's probably okay on a 4k screen, but on my 1440p screen, longer names get cut off. Even worse on 1080p screens.

  • I don't really see the point of adding the time of the run you see on your profile. It only says 12:00, 13:00 and 14:00 anyway (depending on your timezone). Even if it did say the time of when the run was submitted, it would still look really cluttered. I would just remove this.

  • For whatever reason, the homepage and user profile still use an old picture of the game, even tho a new one was uploaded. Followed Games shows the updated picture.

  • Cover resolution in the settings of a game says 320x124, even tho it's 142x199.

  • Also on the homepage, why does it show a * behind every single time? Wasn't that used to indicate IGT?

Some other things from the thread I agree with:

  • Bring back the recent runs list on the leaderboards. Was a nice overview and there was no reason to remove it.
  • The WR graph was a huge overhaul and is actually readable now. But it would be nice if you could zoom in.
  • Bring back splits.io integration? It still shows splits on older submitted runs, but there's no field to enter a splits.io link when submitting a new run.
  • Bring back some more user stats in the top right corner on a profile.

yea, there are quite a few spots where you can wrap around the screen, but it's pretty risky and i haven't found any spots where it could actually save so much time that it would be worth the risk. namux also did it in his SGDQ17 run:

Hey guys, I know most of you have already expressed your disappointment with the newest update. I generally like updates to a website, as it gives the website a new, fresh look. But those updates also need to be useful.

I have been speedrunning for almost 10 years, back when every community still used their own website or used Google Sheets.

I always loved the idea for a central hub for speedrunning. I talked a lot with Pac, he's a great guy and the idea he had for speedrun.com was amazing. A central hub for all leaderboards and tutorials, ressources, etc. Back when Pac was still in charge, I don't think their were any major problems, at least I don't remember any. And that is the major problem.

Personally, I think that most of the time when a website like this gets sold, problems like these start to occur. I don't think that ELO is bad per se. I have seen the other websites of ELO's portfolio, and I think they offer great ressources to their respective games. But here is the main point: I don't play any of these games, so I don't know what a good resource website needs.

A resource website should be ran by people who are knowledgable about the game/the main point of the website. Seeing as no one on ELO's time has ties to the speedrunning community, that's where I see the biggest problem.

If they look at their most recent tweet, where they ask for feedback on their newest update, you can tons of people who are respected in the speedrunning community sending multiple times with all sorts of issues with the newest update.

Of course all of this can be fixed in another update, but why let it even come this far?

And this is why I wanted to post this in the forum, hoping that someone from ELO's team might see this: GET BETA TESTERS! This should be so obvious. People who have no ties to the speedrunning community, should not be in charge of a speedrun resource website/speedrunning leaderboards. They have no idea what the community needs.

Get Beta testers. Show them what you have been working on, let them give you valuable feedback if that one fancy new feature you are working on is a good addition to the website.

The leaderboards are a mess with the most recent update. So many issues that someone who had the slightest clue about speedrunning would not have done. If you don't know what the community needs, let someone else be in charge.

The ads are also disgusting. I understand that a website with so many visitors need stable servers, and those servers are expensive, but 4 ads and an auto-playing video in the sidebar, makes it look like ad-ware. Find a better way of being able to pay for the servers. Profit should not be the number 1 priority on a community resource website.

I love the idea of SRC, but with how it has been going since the ELO takeover, it's getting ran into the ground. And if there are no significant changes with how this website is being ran, I don't see it be the central hub for speedrunning for much longer.

So I am asking you ELO staff, sit down with some speedrunners, and have some in your team for executive decisions, otherwise I don't see SRC survive for much longer.

If you take damage, the game crashes. You can mostly avoid that by ducking.
