@DJhinn. Okay. As someone who simply knows something is going down I see a headline that turns out is neither productive or informative. "Trouble in paradise"? Clearly you're establishing that this community is a paradise to people, people you obviously have a grievance with.

Your first two posts hammer the point home. Your are snarky and by extension being uncivil, and I double checked I was using the right words to describe the impression I got so I wasn't mistake. The fact that the very first reply was passive-aggressive is proof of this. Your third post didn't have enough to comment on one way or another and only on your fourth post do you actually get to the point and be more civil after claiming you are the only one who's being civil. Already by this point I already had this impression of you and the behaviour of the other parties is completely irrelevant at this point. Either they are in the right or both sides are in the wrong.

Assuming you were civil before and assuming what you say is accurate, to me, I don't see how your thread heading and first two posts helps your case. If being civil got you no where then take it up with a higher authority, put up with it, or quit. I want to stress that I'm not being hostile with you but being in this kind of environment obviously isn't good for you and talking to the mods you say hasn't got you results so the only options I can think of I've listed above. I'd have done my best to make things work but from personal experience when push came to shove I'd either put up with it or I'd quit.

I'm not in any position to address your issues and honestly I don't know what will satisfy you, REALLY satisfy you other than a moderator purge because if you could get on with those in charge now I don't think things would be like they are now. This will be my last post here because I just wanted to give you some advice and that's all I can give. I just hope everyone can come to some amicable agreement on the best way to move forward.

For context, I wouldn't call myself active in this community for some time since I got side-tracked with retroachievements but am looking at coming back to speedrunning a FF game for myself and maybe for tournaments like the relay that just happened.

That being said, the last two times I've visited this specific community, there's been a thread like this. While I've not been wading through the thick of it I can say that as an outsider @DJhinn you're opening remarks were not civil and then for you to say that you're the only one being civil? Again, as an outsider, no it's you that's being uncivil and people have either chosen to be uncivil back and taking no nonsense from you or tried to be civil and not exacerbate the situation.

Whatever issues you may have, if I was a moderator (and I'm certainly not asking to be) I'd have done my best to avoid this situation to begin with but failing that I'd be far less inclined to be supportive towards you given your behaviour. I'm on no one's side so take this as advice that if you want people to be supportive of your cause or make things better, please don't come across so confrontation and adversarial. Now you can take this and reflect and work with the community to address the issues or start attacking me as well, take your pick.

Hey DrMaxtermind.

What emulators are allowed for games such as this? I'm looking to emulator genesis games through retroarch but there are multiple cores to use and figured I might as well install the core that is valid for speedrunning one day.

  1. There is the option to use PS Remote play, a first party app, that can allow you to stream your PS4 to to your PC through OBS. That will capture everything including blocked content. Just google "ps remote play download" and you'll find it.

You'll need to sign in to your PS account in the app and I think on first time link up you'll have to follow the instructions on looking up a one time code on your PS4 then type that in. In OBS you can use Window capture to then select the PS4 remote play app and off you go.

If you look, I posted a question almost 2 years ago and never got a reply. I can only assume this forum/community is dead.

Are emulators allowed for this game and if so which emulators?

I'm fairly novice when it comes to emulators and know literally nothing about genesis titles. I saw one which seemed easy to use, Fusion but I was curious if I ever chose to run this game what rules, if any, are there.

Yeah but then take that route and you can say people who lack electricity, a computer, limbs with which to play, heck I lack the time to compete so do we limit how much we grind? Not meaning to sound argumentative but there comes a point when anyone who wants to speedrun REOB on pc should have a pc that can play it. This isn't Cyberpunk 2077 where you need a high level PC or a PS4 Pro because it's that much better than the PS4 with loading and frame rates. REOB on an emulator is really basic. You could have a super old pc to the point parts have been discontinued and it will still work reliably.

Anyone who goes the PC route gets file 3 content unlocked straight away or it's just an extra step of installing a file. Same as making REOB HDD instead of disc. No one is prevented from doing this, it's free. It's not worth making rules to exclude content that is accessible to everyone anyway. This is why a tracker and file 3 were eventually allowed because it was harder to make rules and enforce them to prevent people using them than it was to let them be used.

For console users, they start off with a console and the game, that's their baseline. I don't have gameshark, or ulanchelf (sorry don't know what that is). What if you have a PS2 and have no means to connect it to the internet? What if you can't connect to the internet with your PS3 for that matter? Let's say you could record the run and get someone else to upload to get around that obstacle.

It's up to the mods to change the rules if it is clear everyone on console can play at the same level on entry. The last time this came up I think it was stated that all file 3 characters are basically inferior in one way or another anyway so anyone speedrunning wouldn't use them anyway so to go to the effort of modifying console versions to use file 3 when it wouldn't be used seems a mute point anyway.

The best thing you can do is present your case for why file 3 should be allowed for console users and how everyone could easily. Convince the mods that people who can't modify their consoles wouldn't be disadvantaged. If you succeed then the rules will change.

I suppose it's because not everyone has the means to load an emulated save file to their console. I wasn't sure one could use a jp save file from emulator on say a PAL console save it's just not something I tried.

SwedenVSilverwings3 years ago

Long story short, emulator players have access to everything and everyone so no one is disadvantaged. Console though can't access file 3 dubbed characters unless you use gameshark.

This details which characters are 'file 3'.

Thanks then for all the help everyone. I don't know if or when I'd speedrun this but obviously if this helps someone else or I'm good to go at some point in the future then it is more worthwhile.

I mean if someone in the community searches me out and wants to coop that I'd be totally down for it.

Okay, I clicked on the link above.

The top of the page had this: Warnings For Games for Windows - LIVE on Windows 8 or later, install the latest Games for Windows - LIVE software.

The second link took me to another page where I could download gfwlive (3.5.95.0). I checked for viruses naturally and then installed it which worked. Not sure if I was clear before but the installation always failed before over compatibility issues.

I installed the game again and it works so at least I can play the game though I assume Steam didn't keep a save of my profile and I obviously lost it so I would start over from scratch.

Not sure also if I can now follow instructions to bypass it now or say uninstall it now it's done it once. I'm not sure how showing the screen you mentioned proves I'm using Steam, I can't see anything that says I'm on Steam. If I try and shift-tab OBS won't pick it up.

Oh, as far as I can recall, no GFWL window popped up. I installed it as I mentioned, then downloaded RE5 again and it played fine. I see nothing to say how I'm playing it though.

SwedenVSilverwings3 years ago

I think I tried to verify as well and it does the same thing both before and after trying to play for the first time.

Here is what I get:

https://imgur.com/htXG6Ma

It seems the G4WL isn't compatible, with Windows 10? In any case, I want to bypass this software anyway if it's not at all needed and is banned for speedruns. The pain is is that every failed attempt I make I have to uninstall and reinstall.

SwedenVSilverwings3 years ago

I've still not been able to get it to work. It seems like I can't play RE5 through Steam without games for Windows Live (managed to make the connection G4WL). As soon as I try to play for the first time it tries to install stuff only to say that it fails. Every attempt after that results in the play button changing to playing for a few seconds then goes back to play again.

Really don't care for G4WL, whatever it actually did. Should I speak to Steam about it?

SwedenVSilverwings3 years ago

I checked and it says "none - opt out of all beta programs". No other options are available to me.

SwedenVSilverwings3 years ago

Long story short I installed RE5 again but the game fails to play after successfully installing. It talks about failing to install the Games Live feature that they added. If I try and play the game Steam thinks about it for 2 seconds then asks me again if I want to play.

I may someday want to speedrun the game but the fix I found (Maluc) was said to be not a valid solution. Is there a solution to this problem?

SwedenVSilverwings3 years ago

How would this affect console though? If I were to stick an active comeback then I'd have the option of PAL console but if NTSC (USA) has something all other versions lack...it might be the case then, like with RE3, to have a leaderboard based on region.

This then makes a community further diluted so maybe just have maps that have clear advantages (i.e. Hellfire) have separate categories for both console and EMU. Should this happen again it might be prudent to require version of EMU/console.

SwedenVSilverwings3 years ago

I can't find fault in that logic.

SwedenVSilverwings3 years ago

I think there's no good reason why you'd use the non JP version of the game. Simply download the JP version, patch it to English (or whatever language you prefer if there are options) and play. It's the version everyone uses and while the versions should be the same I can imagine there may well be differences. All the offline runs on the leaderboard are the same JP version too.

SwedenVSilverwings3 years ago

For online, JP is the only one that will work (which can be patched to English...mostly some minor text doesn't translate but otherwise works). You're better off just following the instruction for JP (same game once patched to English).
