Non video game activities are not accepted on the site. Speedrunning is a video game hobby.

Something in Doom or Quake back in the 90s.

The trickiest part you’re going to have about trying to find a capture card is finding one that has Mac drivers. Maybe companies have gotten better about this, but it used to be that if you wanted a card with Mac drivers then it was usually a more expensive card like an Elgato or something along those lines.

I would always verify that before you invest in a card that won’t work with your laptop. Also, if you’re looking to play off a TV, make sure you invest in either a powered HDMI splitter or find a capture card that has a pass through so you can get the video feed to the TV without issue.

While CRT TVs do have less input lag, there’s nothing you can do about that if you’re using the Switch. You can’t really connect a Switch to a CRT unless you get a really good digital to analog converter; any cheap box you buy to do it will have more delay and issues than if you just stuck to the original TV. I would only worry about using a CRT if you start playing on an actual NES.

And of course, yes, pointing your camera at the TV like @SioN said is always an option if you don’t have the money right now.

Always check with the mods of the game in question if you have any concern about what is acceptable proof. There is no site wide rule on this, it’s handled on a per community basis. While the above advice is usually (keyword usually) correct, mods might occasionally have other requirements like making sure the audio is very clear.

This is painfully broad and there’s so much more information we need to even begin to provide you with reasonable advice.

I would refer to the pinned post in this forum, and then provide more specific questions if you still have them. There’s also plenty of online guides and tutorials related to streaming that referring to any of them would be a good idea. If you have more specific questions maybe related to capturing gameplay or utilizing a timer like LiveSplit, then we can assist you with that.

Nobody except for you can determine if you need help moderating a game. After all, you’re the moderator, you know the work that’s involved with moderating your game. If you need help, add a mod or two. If you don’t, then don’t.

Series mods as a whole are a bit "bugged", and that is why series mods aren't handed out nearly as often as they once were. Is it a problem they can add games without going through the usual process? Yes, and that is exactly why (well, it's one reason) they aren't added as often as they were in the early days of the site. It's not so much a loophole, but rather the site learning from it's "mistakes" (or rather learning how to implement policies better) as it's grown over the years. Its why finding exceptions to the rules in games that were added years ago, or in something like series moderators isn't a good example of anything other than providing an example of why the rules have changed. Site staff won't get through and re-evaluate the like 20k games on the site, and they won't essentially punish a community/LB for being added prior to new rules or new restrictions.

As for the rules being vague, I won't beat a dead horse with that, staff has commented many times on that and they've reaffirmed that at the end of the day, it's ultimately up to their discretion what gets on the site.

Why would you do that? If you’re broadcasting to YouTube or Twitch then you’ll already have a video of the broadcast. Why go through the hassle of recording what is already, essentially, a recording?

Unless a game specifies otherwise, you won’t need splits or anything, just make sure you get an accurate time of the run after the recording.

Youtube is a video hosting platform, not recording software. OBS is the defacto standard for recording and streaming.

Unless the game’s rules require a timer to be visible during the run, a timer is not required to be on the screen/video. As long as you have the correct time of the run, that’s what matters.

You should always use the official version of a game when speedrunning it. Mods, especially those created by fans, are usually not allowed in most established games. Romhacks are accepted usually as separate games, but it’s very rare to find a game that uses a modded version that is different from the official release.

Granted, there is no site wide rule for this, so I guess if you’re requesting a brand new game for the site you could use the modded version, but I would still discourage it if possible.

Also, posting boards like this isn’t a “gotcha” like you might think it is. Site Staff are human, and they’ve admitted in the past that some games have made it through the game request process that probably shouldn’t have upon retrospective review, but they also won’t retroactively remove any games from the site.

The fact remains that the rules are in place for a reason and they are enforced/applied to incoming games and those rules probably aren’t changing any time soon.

What exactly is your budget for a capture card? HDMI capture cards can run from about $90 or so all the way up to multiple hundreds of dollars. It should also be noted that only a regular Switch that can use the dock can be captured through a card; a Switch Lite can only be recorded through a phone or camera pointed at it (not sure what Switch model you have).

AntarcticaTimmiluvs4 years ago

I’m pretty sure that if your PSP is anything other than a 1000 series model is does component output natively and you can capture it with a component capture card or anything that upscales component to HDMI.

Granted I don’t have a PSP so I might be remembering wrong or thinking of something else.

While I don’t know of any adapters that are good, I have an alternative suggestion. Do you have a PS3 controller? Or really any later-Gen PlayStation controller? All of those are relatively easy to setup to be used (there’s plenty of guides online) because they all connect via USB already.

If a full mod told you not to do something, then don’t do it. Don’t come here and ask us if something is allowed when a full mod already gave you an answer.
