To my knowledge, there are no practice saves already made, but you can create your own. The save for the game is located at C:\Users\userName\AppData\Roaming\Anodyne\Local Store#SharedObjects\Anodyne.swf
You could try messaging frenzied_coder directly, he might have practice saves as he's the only one who has really run glitchless recently.

Yes, merging exists on every patch except for current. You can patch to 1.8.3 and have merging without missing out on any content
Sounds like you've selected UVHM. That playthrough doesn't exist in a proper state on patch 1.1, you'll have to play only in NG and TVHM

The Gearbox guns are also a bonus for buying the Gaige DLC. If you don't want to spend any additional money, the non-DLC character runs disallow the Gearbox guns to make the runs more open to newcomers anyway.
The mac version of Borderlands 2 was released after patch 1.2.2, so I would imagine that that is the earliest patch you could get onto on OSX. Your best option is to install a Windows partition onto your mac
Fastest non-DLC character is Zero, but he's significantly harder and more RNG dependent. If you like the game enough to run it, Gaige is well worth the small amount of extra money
What is the proper combination of files to remove to get onto the initial release? Everything I've tried either crashes immediately or freezes on the main menu.

I'm not sure what your problem is, but I recommend joining the discord server and asking for help there. You'll get much faster responses because a lot more people check there than here.

No OoB will have a different route for sure, seeing as I've found inbounds skips for both the witch of the lake and the unskinned. The level cost reset will change that run as well, as it will allow you to get powerful for the last bosses with way less quitting out. It will probably end up being too short to be very good of a run, but I'm thinking that all bosses will still be a good category.
Old patch will likely be irrelevant for no oob, seeing as the creed rewards bug does not work with the betrayers.
I'm working on creating something on google sheets to cover everything I know about the game.
