E: Oh, or E, let's come up with a more fun category

If you want a category to be added to the leaderboards, run the category. If enough people do runs of it, it will be added. I will say however, that if I were to arbitrarily pick and choose a less glitchy category of the game, it wouldn't be one that revolves around getting a cop car at the start of the game.

I think tagging runs with which era's strats were used makes the most sense, if something is done with the leaderboards. I doubt anyone is going to seriously run obsolete categories, but solely from the perspective of being able to look at the leaderboards and see the progression of the run over time, I think it would be neat.

Would probably be faster to save at Skumole Shack. With a good PCJ spawn on the road it should be possible to pull it off without saving, but when's that going to happen? :p

Small update on stuff that was found ages ago, but never bothered to post here:

It was found that rampage starting TbD is affected by saving and loading the game. More specifically, it affects the order in which the mission scripts are loaded. So if you have the bad order, TbD can't be rampage started consistently, and you have save and load in order to fix it. However, if you have the right script order, duping TbD is consistent as long as you don't fuck up. What it means is that during runs you just need to count the amount times you save and load - even numbers=good, odd=bad.

It was also found that it can also be used to instapass Vigilante, you just have to dupe TbD 11 times and then start Vigilante. This can crash the game, but, if you save and restart the whole game before doing it, it's consistent.

Optimally the way you'd do the whole ordeal is by using Patrick's method to force the taxi fare destination to Downtown. In which case, you can do both rounds of taxi duping and vigilante in one go with just one replay (you'll still be able to save the game between rounds of duping). I've yet to figure out the exact wait timing for it.

Cannon Fodder -> Spilling the Beans (Allows for RC Raider Instapass right after) International & Japanese (The line used on JP is "Hey, amigo. Good to see you could make it"

Bombs Away Dupe -> Friendly Rivalry -> Spilling the Beans -> Distribution International (not sure about JP)

The Shootist -> Demolition Man Japanese Only

Trojan Voodoo -> Spilling the Beans Japanese Only

Crashes on mission completion

Recruitment Drive -> Publicity Tour International

Collection of stuff mentioned on forums and IRC, mostly by Patrick and husho. I'll try to update the thread with video examples and new instapasses as they're being found.

It's still better to discuss individual instapasses in their own threads, but I thought it would be good to have a hub where all information is easily accessible.

There's just enough time to run to the garage from the hospital and start taxi before TbD fails, so leaving taxi in the garage should be a really nice back up strat. You can just keep duping until you fail and then roll with it.

E: Recorded another example video. Used a replay where Tommy walks into the rampage marker to avoid the situation where you don't see the rampage appear at all, still pretty fast. Used Patrick's backup strat after failing final dupe at around 1:50 mark. Properly done taxi should take under 15 minutes.

If you make a longer rampage replay, you can watch the replay until you see Tommy pick up the rampage and react accordingly.

  • If you see the rampage disappear during the replay, it means the rampage start was successful. You can stop the replay with F1 or F3, and then press F3 F1 F3 to do it again.

  • If you don't see the rampage appear at all it means that Tommy either successfully picked the rampage before it appeared, or that you were too quick with F3 F1 F3. If latter, you can salvage this by pressing F1 F3 quickly (as done with the first two rampage starts in the video), and if former, you can do it just to be safe, as you can't really tell.

It's still possible to fuck up by being too slow, but as far as I can tell, it makes TbD duping a lot easier, as you essentially can't be too quick with the replays.

Probably worth noting that switching to any weapon except fist/grenades works.

At least with a PCJ for Riot it should be faster to drive back and do this instead of doing the death warp.

Some dupes (such as starting AHOD during vigilante or PW2 during TBD) cause an infinite cutscene that you can only get out of by alt tabbing.

I don't think alt tabbing should be allowed in the normal categories, but I wouldn't be opposed to adding a separate category where stuff like frame limiter toggling would also be allowed. Especially if we were to find something that breaks the game even more severely.

When it's so obvious that it affects something, even if it doesn't save any time, I think it's reasonable to force the reset. Also, pretty sure that the glitch where lamp posts start getting knocked down by themselves after some dupes can also carry over to a new game, and I wouldn't expect a run where this is happening to get verified. In essence it's the same thing.

If there's no visual proof of something happening (like the Jury Fury example, [which shouldn't really leave anything behind seeing as it clears all the markers and the cars]), there's really no way to control it outside of forcing a reset at the start of every run, which I don't see feasible.

I've made a point of it to myself to always reset after doing PW2 dupes because it's so obvious that something is happening, and that something is caused by something done on a previous run. I think it's better to be safe than sorry. If what Earleys says is true and clearing the cars clears the glitch then that would be fine as well.

Here's a couple other setups:

The frame window for triggering the rampage isn't getting any bigger, so the trick isn't going to get any easier (it's pretty easy as it is). I prefer my jumping setup, but just find something that works for you I guess.

Ractrot9 years ago

Another setup for rampage starting Chaperone:

I sprint and jump inside the building and play the replay just as Claude is landing, while still holding sprint and W. Getting stuck in the air before the mission triggers like I did doesn't usually happen, but when it does you're still stuck after getting out of the car. You need to get back in and out again to break it.

Ractrot9 years ago

I was mostly thinking about splicing.

Ractrot9 years ago

I don't like any kind of modifications to the game (this also goes for modified radio and loading screens ;)). This one seems especially bad since it uses a save state at a time you shouldn't be able to, which is very abusable.

It sucks that VC's mouse sensitivity settings don't work properly, but I would hope that the work around (other than buying a better mouse) wouldn't involve loading a save file.

Ractrot9 years ago

New stuff: The purchase marker blocks phonecalls, and with Vegeto's method PW2 triggers instantly, so you don't need to get wanted stars anymore, as long as you stay to the right. My setup is different, but according to Vegeto, his setup works as well, if you move to the right a bit. Note: You can't trigger a replay instantly after loading a save, so you need to wait a little before the first dupe.

Should save at least 10s, because you need a shorter replay and you can always get the save warp replay during a phone call.

Yeah, Guy, that's the one I meant. The Cortez call currently fits pretty poorly, so I wouldn't be surprised if it saved time. Sonny call during Phnom Penh with adamzip after The Chase should save a bit of time as well, but that needs more testing.

Furthermore, I'd really want to find a way to break the autoscrollers. In S&D you can get away from the boat by doing a save warp, saving the game and loading the save file, but it crashes the game after a couple seconds like all in-mission save files. The setup is silly because you need a replay of both the save icon and rampage, but I suppose there's potential.

Ractrot9 years ago

"New" idea: Get SMG rampage replay during The Chase, start either The Fastest Boat or S&D with it, and you can take the Cortez call during S&D. This way you lose less time because you can sprint to the boat, and it doesn't stop you from doing the GA warp.

I also tested starting Phnom Penh with the SMG rampage, and it worked out nicely so that the Sonny call started right after I got off the heli, and ended right before the final cutscene ended. Problem is, if you are too slow killing any of the guys during the auto-scroller part, you might be pretty much screwed.

Also fun fact: After rampaging Phnom Penh and Supply & Demand you end up with infinite ammo for all of Tec-9, Kruger and M60.

Ractrot9 years ago

5-6s is what I got as well. Rampage S&D should save more than that, but then again it's riskier. Tough call.

Another idea I've had is rampage starting Guardian Angels, taking the Sonny call during it and doing 'adamzip' after The Chase. Wouldn't work though, because you couldn't pick up the Kruger during a rampage.

Ractrot9 years ago

I actually thought about doing that for GA and PP as well, but figured neither of them would actually save any time. Now that I think about it, you could be right about Guardian Angels though, despite the drive being only 25 seconds. I'll try it out again.

It's a shame you can't warp to the brief case right after it spawns, but only after you're on foot. Would've been a cool time saver.
