I guess there is the Pause/Reset button, but it brings up a dialog box. Also, whether overworld or in the spell menu in the side-scrolling areas, it doesn't allow you to unpause after pressing a direction.

i tested it out for a bit to see if I could spot any differences. I noticed pretty quick that it doesn't let you pause in the overworld. That indicates the program ROM is different in some way, even though it's a disadvantage from a speedrunning perspective.

Every input up to talking to Error can be buffered, I think. So if it's just a matter of talking to Error as soon as possible from game start, it would just be a matter of grinding out a frame perfect run.

I have a run completed that can be submitted if this one gets added

This is actually my only completed 100% run, so I actually have it submitted to that board.

This topic actually came up in someone's Twitch chat yesterday afternoon, and a handful of runners agreed this is a fine safety to take, and one or two even said they also did this in their early runs.

Also, if you like the idea of white mushroom houses in general, there is a miscellaneous category for an Any% variety of All White Mushroom Houses on the category extensions board. It sort of plays out like an abridged version of the Any% Warpless route, except you can use the warp whistles to leave 3 worlds early after getting the bonus item, and then goes on to finish the game like a normal warpless run. The white mushroom houses are one of my personal favorite things about this game.

I think it only costs 15-20 seconds, but that's still too long to make up for any time it can save in a level. But it would save time over a death, if you're able to use it in your early runs to bypass a level you're not comfortable with. The P-wing may prevent your poor plumber finding himself yeeted into a pit or brutally trampled by a minion of Bowser. As you get more comfortable and learn more levels, you can start removing safeties and look forward to getting those time saves in your future runs.

I now have an example Any% All Anchors run highlighted. I've had a few completed, but this was the first one with no ugly deaths. Previous PB had a death in 4-2, but got to fight the world 4 cloud bro before warping out (actually saving time on the split - previous best had a death in the world 3 airship). I got through the run deathless, but the cloud bro went left in this one so I didn't get the extra cloud. But then I got no hands, so the luck was still far above average overall.

I reviewed this thread again and decided to do an Any% All Anchors run last night. It was pretty rough, but a first completed run is in the books. I'll post this to the category extensions thread as well once I get it highlighted on Twitch.

Also, I see some posts above about Frog% NWW. I heard some talk about this one on Twitch and gave it a try along with the other frog categories. I didn't know about the 8-1 clip until I saw helf do a run earlier tonight, and went the whole way to 3-7 to get a second cloud, so I could easily take a chunk of time off this one just by doing that. But I have a run to submit if this does get added as a provisional category.

I think this thread must have been made shortly after I started doing my White Mushroom House % runs last year. I got sidetracked for a while by Zelda II after I tried to make this my first speedgame, and I'm finally making my way back to SMB3.

I find this run to be a lot of fun, and worked my time down over the last few weeks as I eased myself back into running this game. I think it is a good run for transitioning from playing the game casually, especially if getting all the white mushroom houses is something you like to do.

My basic rules are to complete the game with no wrong warp, collecting the item from each white mushroom house (spawning the white mushroom house alone is not sufficient). The run is otherwise Any% with warp whistles allowed. Item duplication would be banned in case a way could be found to exploit it.

Two other players have expressed interest in running this. One of my friends did a run or two last year while he was working on 100%, but I don't think he highlighted his run. My latest best run is below. It had some overall good RNG which made up for some otherwise sloppy play in parts.

Anyway, I'd be really excited if this idea gains traction, and I hope some others consider giving it a try!

Thanks for the tips. From what I'm reading around here, it sounds like it would actually be preferable to leave milliseconds off of submissions? I've gotten in the habit of frame counting all of my PB runs, and fixing my splits just for my own sake. It looks like there are some good resources in that doc. I've been using avidemux, but it seems like there are some more purposeful tools linked to in there.

For retiming runs, what is the correct starting frame? I was guessing it's the frame when the koopa's stop moving, but it seems like they continue moving a bit after the Start button is pressed.

I feel like All Keys rules do already allow this type if exploit. In particular, many runners are in the habit of skipping a doomknocker in order to prevent a bubble from spawning in Palace 4. When opportunity strikes, bots from the drippers in Palace 2 can cause a red iron knuckle and bubble to despawn. I think if, theoretically, a novice runner were to wait for the drippers to despawn the red IK for safety, or even use the jar farming strat in Slackanater's damageless route, this would be allowed per All Keys rules.

I have actually recently started doing all white mushroom house runs. Been calling them White Mushroom House %. I'm not really speedrunning at this point, but just trying to not go too slow. I've been playing through to 4-2, warping to world 5 and playing through to 5-5, warping to world 6 and playing through to 7-2, and warping to World 8 to finish the game.
