2024 NES Any% Trilogy Tournament - Challonge

Hello everyone! This forum thread will be used to announce new rule changes to the MCMG leaderboard.

The first new rule change for this thread is that the "Alt Fast" timer in Vs. SMB is no longer allowed, effective 12/15/2023. "Alt Fast" has been allowed and used in Decathlon speedruns for years, however due to it not being native to the official version of Vs. SMB (which poses an automatic advantage over the actual version of the game), we have come to the conclusion to ban it. Please keep this in mind when doing future Decathlon/SMB1 Engine speedruns.

Hello everyone. The MCMG Moderation Team would like to announce a few new rules that have been discussed this past week.

1. FCEUX IS NO LONGER ALLOWED: Since SMB1/SMB2J have already banned FCEUX, and word that the SMB3 community might ban it as well (due to recent discoveries of it having accuracy issues), we feel that it is only appropriate to ban it here as well.

2. PEOPLE WHO REQUEST CATEGORIES MUST HAVE VIDEO PROOF: If you would like to request a category, you must link a member of the mod team (or on the forums/discord if you prefer) a video to your run. We will not be considering category requests from now on if you can't provide a run of your own.

3. STANDALONE NES SMB1 VERSION IS ALLOWED FOR FAMICOM TRILOGY: Since the standalone Famicom version is essentially no different to the standalone NES version, we felt it would be necessary to allow the standalone NES version of SMB1 for Famicom Trilogy speedruns. However- SMB1/Duck Hunt and World Class Track Meet carts are not allowed.

4. SMB USA (JP SMB2U) IS ALLOWED FOR NES TRILOGY: With the Famicom and NES versions of SMB2U being pretty much identical, the Mod Team has agreed to allow the Famicom version for NES Trilogy speedruns!

5. FAMICOM VERSION OF SMB1 IS ALLOWED FOR NES TRILOGY: For the same reasons as Rule #3, we will be allowing the standalone Famicom version of SMB1 for NES Trilogy. We will not be allowing the FDS version of SMB1.

Hello everyone. Last week, a new moderation team has been made for the MCMG leaderboard, and since then the new moderators have made a collaborative effort to fix up the leaderboard and turn it into a more ideal place for people to submit their runs. This is going to be a rather lengthy post, so be prepared!

New Moderation Team: @Mars02 , @stewie_cartman , @Kosmic , @EthanRTA , @SuperMegaDav , @lackattack , @GTAce

1. All categories will now be timed without loads!

This only affects Marihour and Credits Warps, since every other category already is timed without loads. We have also raised the game switching time cap from 25 seconds to 30 seconds (except for SMB2J which is 45 seconds due to the longer FDS bootup). This way people don't feel super rushed to boot up a new game to prevent losing too much time.

2. Game Orders:

This is the current status of the game orders that the Moderation Team has chosen:

~ Famicom + NES Trilogy: Fixed order (1+2J/2U+3) We felt that given the title 'Trilogy', it would feel a little weird to have the games played at any order, and we felt that it wouldn't be as interesting.

~ Pentathlon: Free Order We believed that it would be much more fun to allow free game order for Pentathlon!

~ Decathlon: Free Order Nothing much to say for this one since Decathlon was already free order.

~ Marihour: Fixed Order (1, 2J, 2U, 3, W, 64) We didn't like the idea of allowing free game order for Marihour since it would change the category too much.

~ Credits Warps: Fixed Order Credits Warps was already in fixed order before.

3. We are now allowing JP versions for Marihour:

A while ago, there was a lot of talk amongst community members about the Marihour rules, and the Moderation Team has agreed that it would be great to lift the 'US-Only' rule from the Marihour speedrun!

4. New Categories: The Moderation Team came up with a couple categories to add onto the MCMG leaderboard. Most of these were on the leaderboard a long time ago, but were removed unexpectedly.

~ Quadrilogy: This category is essentially SMAS All Four Any%, but the original 8-Bit versions (SMB1, SMB2J, SMB2U & SMB3)! We decided that this category should have free game order.

~ SMB1+SMB2J (misc.): This category was on the leaderboard before but was removed. This category will have a fixed game order.

~ SML1+SML2 (misc.): This category was also on the leaderboard before being removed. This category will also have a fixed game order.

As of posting this, these changes have not been done yet on the leaderboard. You should see them take place over the next few days!

Please give the moderation team a big thank you for making these changes. A lot of time, effort and debate has been put into making these decisions.

I have been meaning to do this for a couple months now, but I never got to it. Would the mods be interested in adding an All Stages category (world 1-8 warpless + a-d warpless)? IMO it would be an appropriate addition since it includes every level in the game in one speedrun. If the answer is 'no', that would be totally fine. Just thought I'd ask.

Hello, I have been curious about the route for doing a New Game All Stages run for a while, and hearing varying responses from a couple moderators, I'd wonder if there could be a little clarification. :)

I'd originally assumed that it was completing 8-4 warpless 8 times and then doing the letter worlds warpless after the 8th warpless completion. However I did hear that you could just do any% 7 times and the 8th run would be warpless 8-4 + a-d warpless (essentially All Stages). Depsite the rules saying "The warpless playthrough can be any of the 8 8-4 playthroughs.", I'm a bit confused.

Sorry if it seems obvious but I'd like to know the most optimal route that is permitted.

Hello, recently the addition of IL leaderboards has been created for this leaderboard. While this might be a neat little add-on for some people, others in the community go against the idea of having leaderboards for each level in each game. Both sides have good arguments.

Given the mixed feelings, the moderation team has agreed to allow the community to vote on wether we should have these IL leaderboards, or if they should be removed from this sr.c page.

• If the vote comes to a tie, I will record a cointoss and upload it in the forums/discord.
• Moderators may also vote on this matter, they are community members, not just verifying machines.
• You will have until 4pm ET on Thursday, 6/10 to vote!

Hello, many of you probably got the notification that @EthanRTA has broken the Marihour world record, this is not the case.

Since Marihour is one of the few categories that does not utilize the w/o loads process, his time remains as the one that he has submitted. The time was verified as a 55:26 w/o loads, but had to re-edit his time since Marihour does not use the w/o loads column. I've been seeing more Trilogy submissions lately, and it has gotten into my muscle memory to remove the loading times when verifying runs, this unfortunately happened with Ethan's new Marihour PB.

Small error, I apologize for the inconveniece. :)

Earlier this year there was a discovery where you could crash into a stop, and the game would treat it as the final destination. This can save a large amount of time in each mission. I feel that this should be permitted in any%, but not in 100%. Using this glitch in 100% would take away from the feeling of completing the speedrun in a 100% manner.

Hello community members.

I feel like it is necessary to take down the High Score category.

Why?

High score runs are very difficult to convert to an actual time, and especially one that will accurately place someone on the leaderboard. People may complain that they got a higher score than someone else but are ranked lower. High score isn't really a speedrun either, so it doesn't make much sense to have as a speedrunning category anyway.

Over the past several days I took the time to create a human theory TAS for any% 8-4 and any% 8-5. The time for 8-4 ended up being 10:55.154 and 8-5 was 11:30.912. I kinda doubt that humans will achieve sub 11 for 8-4 bc there are some things that the TAS does that are very tricky, precise and risky to go for in RTA runs. I don't doubt that humans will get sub 12 though for both 8-4 and 8-5.

I was just watching a 16 star speedrunner on twitch, and they ended up failing the first lblj, but glitched into the 2nd key door to the right of the bitdw door. So instead of collecting both keys, why not just try to lblj into the 2nd key door without collecting the keys? And doing the other 2 bljs on the upper floors to reach bits?

Do you think humans are capable of performing FPG backwards? So that mario is facing left when the glitch is done? Or is that not humanly possible ATM?

I've been doing some glitchless runs and wanted to know if Judges was a glitch, since you're moving the subpixel of objects un 8-1. Thanks! :)

Hey guys. I made up a category to speedrun when I get 100 followers on twitch, and decided to make a category out of most of the games. It will be called "The Annomytor Challenge". The games and categories will be:

Mario Bros. - 8 Phases

SMB1 - Any% NES, Warpless NES, MWE, Any% SNES, Warpless SNES.

SMB2J - Any% 8-4 M+L FDS&SNES, Warpless 8-4 M+L FDS&SNES, Any% D-4 M+L.

ANNSMB: Any% M+L, Warpless M+L.

SMB2U - Any% NES, Any% SNES, Any% S+Q SNES.

SMB3 - Any% No Wrong Warp, Warpless, 100%.

SMW - 11 Exit.

SMAS - All 4 Any%.

That would take a long time to complete and the reason why SMB2U no warps isn't there and SMB3 100% is on the list is because I think more people would be better at smb3 100% than smb2u all levels. Good day ~ @Mars02

Hey everyone. On the leaderboard for 70 star I see that most of the top runs are done on the usa version of the game. But for the other categories they're on the japanese version. I think I've heard the answer before. But is using the us version of mario 64 faster in 70 star than the japanese version?
