In my opinion chaning the dpi of the mouse is ok. Currently there is no rule against it.

"Alternative Shooting" is referring to the in-game setting where you dont have to swing the mouse, but instead point and click the power of the shot.

Hello,

I missed this! Thank you for the heads up. I have put the run on hold for now. I will have to check in what way this affects the run.

Cheers!

I will look into it. We also have a Discord. I am more active there and will see your message earlier :)

Edit: It should work again.

Hey, thanks for your post! I think I can figure out a way to make Co-Op work.

Hi, I just wanted to let you know, I added some rules about submission of the run. These changes are not new, I just wanted to clearly write them down in the rules.

Hi everybody,

I updated the autosplitter. It should work properly now on most machines. It can also be used for all-maps category by activating the setting.

For all-maps you might want to disable the auto-reset option, since the timer will always reset, when entering main menu. That means if you accidentally press "Exit" after completing a map, instead of choosing the next map, the timer would reset.

Hello everyone, I updated the autosplitter with a new feature and some bug fixes!

The Script should now record your ingame time. This eliminates a lot of the time, that is depended on the performance of the machine golf it is running on. If you want, you can include the ingame timer in your future runs, but this is not mandatory.

Note: auto-reset is still experimental.

Hello everyone,

first I want to welcome all the new runners, I am very happy about how many runners we are getting lately! With that we also have more voices and opinions on what's good for the game. I got asked about the current rules in this post: https://www.speedrun.com/golf_it/thread/bkf1w

After some considering here are 5 changes I am proposing:

#1) Single Map: Unlocking the settings for Strokes and Time Limit The original rules (Locked Strokes at 12 and Time Limit at 2:00) were meant to ensure an even playing field for all runners. Golf It! is a hard speedrun game with many resets. Unlocking both settings (which means you can set it to whatever you want) would make it easier for new runners to get started in this speedrun. However this should not lead to shorter runs, since you still want to use as little Strokes as possible to save time.

#2) All Maps: Unlocking the settings for Strokes and Time Limit and make it True 100% With Strokes unlocked for Single Map, it only makes sense to atleast consider unlocking it for All Maps aswell. This opens up the opportunity to change "All 6 Maps" to a 100% category (which means getting 108/108 Holes). Previously this was not really possible, because getting every single Hole with only 12 Strokes was extremely hard and not fun. Changing it to 100% makes sense, because it prevents the use of fast-finishing a Hole with RF-button spam, since you actually have to finish all Holes.

#3) Ban hats from Hard mode Some hats are straight and could be used as shooting indicator. This neglegts the whole point of Hard mode and should be banned in my opinion.

#4) Using only the same hole in Hard mode So I was trying Hard mode for a bit. I was able to do most of the strats from Classic, so there isn't too much of a difference compared to Classic. What if we add a rule that forces you to always use the Hole of the current level. This way the routes at least somewhat differ from the routes in Classic, because you can't cheat your way through some levels and the run actually gets harder.

#5) Adding Easy (or Any%) mode I noticed Easy is not added yet. I propose adding Easy Mode as a new category next to Classic, Hard and Co-Op. Alternative Shooting could also be allowed for this mode, since you get an indicator for your Shooting Power . Instead of adding Easy mode we could also add Any%. Here you would be allowed to set the rules however you want. This could lead to some crazy strats and time-saves, I'm really excited about.

#Your turn So these are the changes I am proposing. I want to make sure everybody can accept these changes. Therefore I will wait until 2020-01-12 15:00 (UTC+00:00) before implementing these changes to hear your opinions about it.

  • Changes 1-3 will get implemented, if nobody objects.
  • Changes 4 and 5 are food for thought. If you want them to be implemented make a post here in this thread in favour of it. Until then make sure to use the old rules still.

Feel free to post anything related to the autosplitter in this post, such as feedback or bugs. Thanks!

You can get the alpha version of the autosplitter under Resources. I am not sure wheather it works on other machines than mine. So please post your experiences with it here.

Thanks for your post! TL;DR in the end

After reading all the points again, I am mostly convinced your proposed rule change makes sense and should be implemented.

A ) Increasing Strokes for a Single Map ----------------------------------------

Riskier strats are risky, because 1) you waste time if you fail and have to start at the beginning of the hole and 2) you are potentially losing the whole run if you overstroke. Increasing the strokes would make risky strats less "risky", because you don't have to worry about 2).

But this isn't necessarily bad for the runners, imo! It's just something to keep in mind.

Having said this unlocking Strokes could lead to runners using R and F more liberally. However using R and F wastes time, so increasing Strokes would most likely NOT result in faster runs.

Overall I think unlocking Strokes (and Time Limit) should not be a problem

B ) Increasing Strokes for the "All Maps"-Category ----------------------------

I am still a bit hesitant to change this. Possible Rules?:

  1. 12 Strokes and 106/108 (Current Rules) Hard difficulty. You cannot use risky strats, if you can't execute them reliably.

  2. 12 Strokes and 108/108 needed (True 100%) Very hard and (probably?) unfun for most runners.

  3. Unlocked Strokes and 106/108 needed Easy difficulty. It is still possible to use the RF-spam to finish a Hole quickly (it takes less then 5 seconds with 100 Strokes)

  4. Unlocked Strokes and 108/108 needed (True 100%) Easy difficulty. The runs doesn't really get harder compared to 3), but it eliminates the RF-spam. The run is about you knowing when too use risky strats (risky strats are worse than the easy route, if you fail it too often). The difficulty in the run lays in executing strats reliably (so basically the same as in 1), but less punishing: beginner friendly?)

Either 1) or 4) seems to be the way to go. At the moment I lean towards 4), but I will think about it a bit more.

TL;DR ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think your proposed rule change makes sense. I will think about it a bit more and then make a NEW POST to clarify the proposal (that way more people might read it and give feedback). If nobody objects within a few days, I will announce the new rules.

Hello Djodjino!

Thank you for your post, I am happy for every new runner! (Sorry for the late reply)

To be honest I didn't really question that part of the ruleset too much. For me resetting too much on one hole meant a reset for the whole run anyway, since it wasted too much time (not to mention taking 2 minutes on one hole).

Now that you brought my attention to it, I can definitly see how newer runners might struggle on difficult tricks, that involve precise shooting. I think Jaychalke (who set up the initial rules) wanted to ensure everyone runs with the exact same conditions. Personally I think this is super important in speedrunning.

That being said: Changing the rules would matter for the run: My theory: Increasing the stroke count (say to 99) would lead to more risky strats being used and constantly resetting the hole. Personally I don't think this is healthy for the game and not fun. ^ I would love to hear your opinion about this.

About impossible runs: Yes, some runs can be quite challenging (looking at you Jade Temple), but I don't think they are impossible. It sucks if you have to reset, because you failed a risky strat. But thats what risky strats do in all speedrun games. You can always go for the safe route and miss out on some time safes with the "all-in" skips. Hard tricks should be rewarded with a time safe.

Sorry for the wall of text, I just wanted to state my opinion as clear as possible. :)

TL;DR: For now I think it's best to leave stroke count at 12.

Cheers, Lofty

Hello,

so the devs just released their new map "Jade Temple", which is awesome! However for us that means the category "All maps" has to be adjusted. For now I added a subcategory "Legacy" which contains all the old runs. You can still submit runs to it, if you want.

As this game is still in beta, I think there will be more official maps released in the future. Maybe we can find a better solution than just adding legacy versions...

For now I will change the default "All maps" category to contain "Jade Temple" aswell. With one additional map, finishing 107 out of 108 holes seems a bit too difficult. I propose to change it to 106 out of 108 holes. The skill ceiling in Golf It is still really high, so it shouldn't be a problem. Any objections?

I like the idea. :) The problem I see with this however is that workshop maps are inofficial and might change alot. Might be hard to track all the changes... Also who decides which maps out of the 5000 are worthy?

Hi everyone, Lofty here.

#Category Update

As this games gets more and more traction I would like to propose a little update on the categories. I think it just looks more clear, especially for newcomers. Something like this:

##Grasslands Classic Hard ##Winterland Classic Hard ##Mines Classic Hard ##Graveyard Classic Hard ##Pirates Cove Classic Hard ##All Maps Classic Hard ##Co-Op Grasslands Winterland Mines Graveyard Pirates Cove All Maps All Maps Hard

I don't see a problem for overlapping ruleset as its mostly the same for all runs, expect "play in hard mode" and "play as 2 players"

#Small Rule Update

Potential Small Rule too add:

" Alternative Shooting (controller) is prohibited. "

Personally I think the runs are way more fun this way. Currently no one used this, but its actually an huge advantage. We could simply make a new category if someone still wants to use this, which wouldn't be hard and fit nicely into the format above. It would still be really interesting since there are a lot more risky strats to go for. (save the frames)

I would love to hear your feedback on this. ##~ Cheers, Lofty

Hello there!

I have a question/suggestion on timing the final hole. Currently it is stated as "Timer ends once the ball enters the final hole on hole 18". Maybe it should be changed to something like "Timer ends once the stroke-count in the bottom right corner disappears". I understand this seems very picky, but would provide a more fair and comparable gameplay, e.g. recent grasslands top 3 :) What do you think?
