THE BELOW TEXT IN ITALICS IS MY ORIGINAL POST. TL;DR: The bomb barrel despawned, and when I came back to check it later, it was there. I thought I had wrong-warped past it, but upon further review I was mistaken. I apologize if any of this was misleading or anything, I just thought I found something and wanted to share it.

Just wanted to share this. I played through this casually recently, and on Stage 4 I exited floor 5 through a door. I realized that I missed part of it (which held a bomb) and re-entered the door I exited, and I ended up a door left of that door on the other screen.

16:40 or so in the above vod is when that happens.

Not sure if this can help save time in the future but wanted to document it now.

I'm going to be running this game in the next few weeks, and was hoping to speedrun it as a co-op speedrun with a buddy. If we do so, is there a category or board extension for co-op runs? Or would a co-op run be allowed on the main board?

United StatesJSR_2 years ago

It was made aware to me of the loading differences between hardware and emulator. Upon review, I've decided to split the leaderboard for the PS1 version. If the PC version gets runs, we can look at that one at that time.

So I have 2 versions of this game in official CD-ROM releases: the original 1996 copy, and the Limited Run Games version. I've installed both versions and neither have the IGT/mission summary screen at the end of mission 5.

I've started downloading "abandonware" versions and haven't had any luck in finding any that work.

Is there anyone out there that can help? The sticky asks me to download an althub... I can't find those either! Where are they? How do I install one? Someone, anyone, can you help me?

Lately, there's been an influx of newer runners of this game using emulators that do not run at the correct speed.

The NES runs at roughly 60.09 FPS. This is the correct frame rate. Most clones, FPGAs, or other options (The NES classic or Switch, for example) run at 60 FPS on the money; this is acceptable as well.

Any frame rates that are faster or slower are not allowed, and any runs submitted henceforth which are not at the correct speed will NOT be verified.

I recommend NEStopia for speedrunning. To maximize your visibility and legitimacy, I suggest enabling an input reader in the emulator settings (So we can see your inputs) as well as displaying the frame rate of the emulation. FCEUX is also an acceptable emulator. Other emulators may be acceptable, but I HIGHLY suggest you ask here first, otherwise you may end up grinding out a run of one of the hardest games ever made... only to have your run denied :(

Here is a google doc of general NES speedrun rules to follow: https://goo.gl/pYN6AR

(I highly suggest you capture your entire emulator window in OBS as well, in fact anything you can add to your recordings/streams that show us info about your emulation setup will help!)

I have been informed that user Cejcai has created a community discord for this game! Now, you can discuss routes, strategies, glitches, or ask questions about your runs, or others' runs, and more! Connect with the Tingle's Balloon Fight community here:

Title asks it for me.

This is a legitimate question, as I am very unfamiliar with this game, and I'm learning the speedrun starting today. I'm just curious as to what the reason is. Seems that any% would allow any difficulty, would it not?

Title says it all. I have this on PS2 via the Legends disc. Is this a legal way to play? I assume so (AFAIK it's the Arcade port) but just checking in! Thank you!

If, during your run, you run out of supplies and game over, would it be permitted to enter the corresponding password for the stage that you were on when the game over occurred, as long as you actually saw the password in your run? Obviously, using these to skip forwards or back would be bogus... but being able to re-load the game and start the level over using the game's given passwords seems ok to me? What do you think?

Is that a legal strategy? If so, does it affect timing at all? Basically what I want to know is, if I get the meatball before every run, does it change the timing of my actual run at all?

For those that don't know, if you complete the first practice stage, the next time you start the main game on that same reset, you get a meatball which is basically like a free refill of life.

United StatesJSR_3 years ago

I noticed there's no indication of when timing starts and stops. Is there anyone that can give me a hint on this? I suppose I could just framecount the run on the board, but it would be nice to have that listed in the rules anyways...

Hello all! I'm learning the game and I noticed in the WR they mention Brando's new 3-2 boss fight strat which skips the 2nd phase of the fight (with the aggravating detachable zombie torsos). Is there a specific method to pulling this off? I am relatively new to this game, and would love to learn more. Thank you :)

United StatesJSR_3 years ago

Just noticed, my run was verified, and my time certainly shouldn't be the WR... perhaps the board is sorted backwards?

It should be easily fixable, figured I'd let you know :)

I can't seem to find AngelDarksong's Any% Set Seed PB (current WR) anywhere! Is there any record of this run that is saved or viewable anywhere?

I plan on learning and running this game VERY soon, and I want to A: do my due diligence in learning and researching the game, run, strats etc. but more specifically, B: I always post the current WR for chat in my layout and if this is still considered the WR I'd like to represent that.

United StatesJSR_3 years ago

It was mentioned to me in my chat the other day that they thought my run should be a seperate category from RedPepper's, since they forego the training sequences in their run. Since the training sequences are challenging for a much different reason than the any% runs are (both are insanely hard) and any% is a much shorter run, I've decided to split them.

Any%: beat the game 100%: overqualify in all 3 training sequences (#'s required are in the rules) Turbo Allowed: Formerly Any% Turbo Allowed.

I made some maps for the game based on Zerfall's PB. I'm looking into routing but these might help anyone that is interested in learning/running this.

Just so that future runs won't have any issues, I've taken the liberty of adding some rules to future submissions. GOING FORWARD, ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST:

-clearly include the game audio from start to finish. (if live streamed, commentary is perfectly fine. If music is played in the vod, it cannot cover up the game audio to the point of obscuring it) -show the reset before the run begins. -show the ending. -if, on emulator, must include the emulator name in the submission.

These are basically par-for-the-course for all NES speedruns, and for a lot of other speedrunning communities as well. Since these rules were not stated clearly until now, past runs will be grandfathered in (unless a separate reason is found to not allow them on the board). Please make sure you submit runs that match this criteria, or your speedrun will not be verified. Thank you!

I just got back into town from vacation and saw we have a new plumbers runner. I was stunned he beat my No Second Chances time by so much (not because my run is unbeatable, I can't honestly say, but that there was that much time to be had). So I put his run side-by-side up with mine and immediately saw why: by the time John wakes up from his dream, my run (which was on real hardware with the real disk) was almost 25 seconds behind his. This is with literally zero inputs at this point.

I'm not sure about 4DO's accuracy but this is obviously much faster than real hardware. I think we should split the board.

Feel free to chime in with any input! I'd love to hear everyone's opinions on this.

As of right now, the GBC Trilogy category does not have a linked category; the 2 more popular speedruns are the required runs for the category. Would there be interest in a linked version as well? If there is, I'd love to make a seperate tab for those :)
